Jane Goodall, whose lifelong work as a primatologist helped broaden the world’s understanding of animal behavior and emotions, has died, her institute said Wednesday. She was 91.
Her field studies with chimpanzees not only broke barriers for women and changed the way scientists study animals, but documented emotions and personality traits within these primates that blurred the line between humans and the animal kingdom.
She passed away due to natural causes in California during a speaking tour in the United States, according to her institute.
Yes. The vast majority of male chickens never reach more than a few days old because, of course, they do not lay. I will not tell you the methods for how they are dispatched.
Male chickens are often called "tom" or "toms" (pl.) By definition Coq au Vin is a chicken dish made with a tom.
I learned some facts about chickens when Mrs Slug and I had a flock. We rehomed the last pair about 4-5 weeks ago to a woman in the East Bay.
I had a neighbor with chickens. Always felt that if I raised chickens, I wouldn’t want to eat them any more. Unlike pigs or cattle, for some reason. Did you have that problem?
Growing up, my favorite most requested special meal was fried chicken (drumsticks!). Toward the end of high school I visited a working farm with a family I didn't know very well. They introduced me to some cute and cuddly chickens. Later that day, we had fried chicken and they laughed at my face when they told me I was eating the chicken I'd cuddled. Put me off chicken, especially chicken with bones, for a decade+. I have trained my brain not to think of it anymore for most chicken, but never ever regained a love of gnawing on a drumstick (or wings for that matter).
It's kind of strange. I can eat chicken bought from a store. I can eat rotisserie chicken bought from Costco. I *cannot* imagine eating a chicken I've fed, watered, and cleaned up after. Mrs Slug is basically the same way on the issue. Most of the birds we've had have died of old age.
I've even supposed that if I were to get real about this, it could lead to me becoming vegetarian. So, I haven't gotten real about the issue of eating meat, although I will confess that I won't eat veal. I learned decades ago that veal is just another word for calf, which caused me to swear off veal. I used to love eating veal parm. Can't do it, now.
I'm good to go on chicken parm. Like I said above, I can eat store-bought chicken without a problem. I can't see myself eating chicken I've personally tended to. I realize and understand that there is a disconnect.
No, but is it a large majority. Some roosters are needed long term, and some of the excess are still raised to the point of being usable as fryers. And all chickens as they age become candidates for soup and stew production.
Apparently, the filibuster is still a thing, otherwise both the House and Senate could have achieved cloture and passed the White House's bill.
Having said that, this failure to fund the government is what Trump (the GOP) wants. They needed to get Democrats' support to pass a bill. They were unwilling to *negotiate with Democrats* on the details of the bill, so they own the shutdown.
Both parties have had defectors on some points. When you don't have a reasonable consensus, things go from messy to messy-er.
Of course, those affected are the 3/4 of a million abruptly unemployed, hundreds of thousands of essential employees working without pay, and all the people wanting or needing a variety of services. And everyone associated with any of these groups.
But collateral damage is never a consideration when political posturing starts.
LOS ANGELES — On a first day of the MLB postseason in which scoring was at a premium, the Dodgers picked up the slack on offense. Teoscar Hernández and Shohei Ohtani each hit two of the Dodgers’ five home runs in a 10-5 win over the Cincinnati Reds in Game 1 of the wild card series on Tuesday night at Dodger Stadium that somehow felt too close for comfort.
The California football team (4-1, 1-0 ACC) will host Duke (3-2, 2-0 ACC) at California Memorial Stadium for the first time since 1963 on Saturday night in Cal's annual Homecoming celebration. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. PT in Berkeley, with the game set to be aired live on ESPN.
For the first time since 2017, Haas Pavilion will play host to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Championships as the California men's gymnastics team will welcome defending conference champion Oklahoma, Stanford and Air Force to Berkeley on April 4.
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Freshman Michelle Woo shot 1-under par to finish in second place individually and the California women's golf team placed in a tie for third overall as the Molly Collegiate Invitational came to a close Tuesday at Trysting Tree Golf Club.
BERKELEY – Senior goalkeeper Teagan Wy of the California women's team earned her second ACC Defensive Player of the Week award of the season, as announced by the conference Tuesday.
Wy led the Golden Bears to their first two ACC shutouts of the year last week defeating Syracuse on Thursday 1-0 and earning a scoreless draw with Boston College on Sunday. The senior made four saves in both contests leading to her becoming the first repeat winner of the award this season.
California football tight end Jeffrey Johnson was named to the watch list for the ninth annual Jason Witten Collegiate Man of the Year on Tuesday, joining a group of 67 of the nation's top leaders in college football.
Members of the watch list have all demonstrated a record of leadership by exhibiting exceptional courage, integrity and sportsmanship both on and off the field and were nominated by their schools.

Years ago I was at an author event and have a signed copy of one of her books. A very inspiring person.

so a hen is a female chicken that lays eggs. are they the same ones that get eaten and just called chickens?

Interesting. I've given up all beef and nearly all pork, for health reasons. I've cut way back on chicken. Fish consumption is up.
But can you eat chicken parm?
I'm good to go on chicken parm. Like I said above, I can eat store-bought chicken without a problem. I can't see myself eating chicken I've personally tended to. I realize and understand that there is a disconnect.
Are all eating chickens are female? I guess so if a male chicken is a Rooster?
No, but is it a large majority. Some roosters are needed long term, and some of the excess are still raised to the point of being usable as fryers. And all chickens as they age become candidates for soup and stew production.

shutdown .. seems like each side wants a shutdown to stick to the other side.
maybe i am misinformed, but is not the majority in both houses enough for Republicans to vote to fund the govt? or is it a 60-40 thing?
Apparently, the filibuster is still a thing, otherwise both the House and Senate could have achieved cloture and passed the White House's bill.

"They were unwilling to *negotiate with Democrats* on the details of the bill, so they own the shutdown."
As we all know, they won't own the shutdown. They'll blame the Dems by saying the Dems reject the proposed bill.
That's just another way of screaming, "alternative facts". Which is, of course, utter nonsense.
I thought basically the Republicans control everything so they could prevent a shutdown, couldn't they?

I heard three Dems voted for but Rand Paul voted against so not near getting to sixty votes needed.

They didn't blow that lead, but it seems like they tried to. 5 runs late, even with a big lead, is not a good look for an already weak bullpen.
Couldn't throw a strike. Lots of walks. 60 pitches with I think at least half being balls.
