Peace prize does not go to Trump. instead it goes to someone who opposes a dictatorship

The Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, who built a powerful social movement and has been living in hiding since last year, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday. The Norwegian Nobel Committee praised “her tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela and for her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.

I'm still upset -- as I'm sure all of you are -- that the DBD has once again been snubbed by the Nobel committee. Scandalous!

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

there is still Monday's Econ prize announcement. i am pretty optimistic about that one.

Trump should be happy for her. According to her Wiki page she is a supporter of Trump and is in favor of his bombing drug traffickers. The deadline for nominations was Jan. 31 so Trump hadn’t done squat by then.

Slow Horses Season 5 (18/19 Apple TV) starts. Episode 1 lays the groundwork for the season with a mass shooting with what looks like a politician murdered by someone that has ties to an opposing politician. Looks like the IT guy will have the main storyline this season. Gary Oldman got very little screen time in the first episode.

looks like tariffs are back in the news. stocks were doing fine until about mid-day.

i guess it is time for the TACO trade again.

It seems to have helped my bonds portfolio, so there's that.

Mooncake festival is a harvest festival in the middle of the 8th month on the lunar calendar (I had to wiki that since I didn't know when it landed). People eat (as you can guess) mooncakes. I don't like them. A dense pastry shell filled with either lotus or red bean paste with an egg yolk in the midd.e

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

last year around this time i went to Harvest festival party in SF Chinatown. it was really just an excuse for a friend's 20th anniv party. there were mooncakes and those fun Chinese dragon dancers.

https://calbears.com/news/2025/10/9/womens-soccer-cal-scores-2-late-goals-to-tie-no-1-virginia.aspx

BERKELEY – Despite trailing by two goals with just eight minutes to go, the California women's soccer team found a way to earn a result against No. 1 Virginia Thursday night at Edwards Stadium. The Golden Bears scored a pair of late goals in a four-minute span, including a deep equalizer from junior Soleil Dimry in the 88th minute to draw with the Cavaliers 2-2.

looked like there were about 4 people in attendance.

[MSOC] Cal Hosts Wake Forest

https://calbears.com/news/2025/10/9/mens-soccer-cal-hosts-wake-forest.aspx

The California men's soccer team returns home to host Wake Forest on Saturday in an ACC battle at Edwards Stadium. The match is the Golden Bears' second-to-last home game of the season.

Cal has a 4-5-2 record (1-3-1 ACC) entering the weekend, while the Demon Deacons are 5-3-3 (0-3-1). The Bears have a 1-2-1 record in the all-time series against Wake Forest including the most recent match in the series in 2023. In that nonconference game in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Cal tied the then-No. 18 Demon Deacons 1-1 thanks to Kevin Carmichael's 43rd-minute equalizer.

In addition to being the 50th anniversary of the great '75 team, this is the 75th anniversary of Pappy Waldorf's 1950 squad, the third of his teams (in a row) to go through the regular season unbeaten (although they were the first of those three to have a non win having tied in the Big Game). It was also the third year in a row that California lost the Rose Bowl. No Bear team since then has gone unbeaten or suffered only one loss and only three ('52, '91 and '04) have had as few as two losses.

FiatSlug's avatar

In the 1950 season, Cal defeated Penn by a score of 14-7 at Cal Memorial Stadium on October 7, 1950.

One week later on October 14, 1950, Cal defeated USC by a nearly identical score of 13-7 at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

in tonight’s 80’s throwback moment, a friend and i are going to see Bill and Ted perform Waiting for Godot. expecting it to be most excellent.

heyalumnigo's avatar

I don't think I could watch that and not think about the iconic lines from Bill and Teds throughout the show.

Oski Disciple's avatar

Spoiler alert: Turns out Godot was stuck in traffic.

Be excellent to each other

FiatSlug's avatar

A riff on Waiting for Godot would be the Christopher Guest film, "Waiting for Guffman".

Not one of his better-known efforts, but still funny.

Oski Disciple's avatar

I'd amend that to "very funny."

Saw Kim's Convenience, the play which led to a series on Netflix. Story of a Korean Canadian family running a convenience store and adjusting to life in Toronto. Not as overtly funny as the TV series, but more moving. Recommended.

heyalumnigo's avatar

Hmm...interesting. I did see the ads for this. I loved the TV show.

Dodgers win in 11th when they get a bases-load throwing error. advance to NLCS.

i suppose it is a "routine play" except for the pressure of when it is not.

Dodgers win NLDS on walk-off error by Phillies

https://www.truebluela.com/dodgers-scores-standings/105592/dodgers-nlds-tyler-glasnow-cristopher-sanchez-roki-sasaki-orion-kerkering-error

LOS ANGELES — Tyler Glasnow and Cristopher Sánchez delivered another fantastic starting pitching matchup in a National League Division Series full of them. Game 4 needed extras to decide, and it was a throwing error by pitcher Orion Kerkering that gave the Dodgers’ 2-1 win over the Phillies in 11 innings to win the NLDS.

not surprising that the most common margin of victory is 3 pts.

doing some data analysis w/ historic scores of NFL games. Season range: 1978 - 2019

also messing around w/ Claude and these auto-coding tools for the first time.

Most Common Margins of Victory (descending by frequency):

some stats .. the median is 9 points which seems high to me.

Margin of Victory Distribution:

Games with margin 0-7 points: 4620 (46.4%)

Games with margin 8-14 points: 2291 (23.0%)

Games with margin 15+ points: 3055 (30.7%)

ALCS

Mariners and Tigers playing game 5 tonight. Skubal vs Kirby. Tigers definitely have the advantage having their probably Cy Young winner going.

heyalumnigo's avatar

Cubs beat the Brewers #1 pitcher last night. In the previous game after Freddie Peralta threw they went with a bullpen game. So I'm guessing game 5 for the Brewers will be another bullpen game with all hands on deck.

For the Cubs, after Boyd went in game 1, Imanaga went in game 2. So I assume the Cubs will have Imanaga start with a short leash and all hands on deck. Things did not go well for him in game 2.

Giants flip script on Eagles, run all over the place in big win. what little i saw of the game, the Eagles were either fumbling or throwing INTs or just watching the Giants running backs gash them for big yards.

i was noticing that yesterday in NYC there were quite a few people wearing their Eagles gear around town in anticipation of the game last night in NY.

AndyPanda's avatar

Skatteboo is (still) a thing.

FiatSlug's avatar

That's okay. For longtime Giants fans, this is only partial retribution for the Miracle at the Meadowlands (see Joe Pisarcik, and to make it Cal-related, Herman Edwards). Last game of the 1978 regular season.

EDIT: I only remember it because I was living in New Jersey at the time and I remember people moaning about it the next day. I also remember thinking, "Why didn't Pisarcik just take a knee?" Running a legit rushing play was absolutely unnecessary at that point in the game and, therefore, risky and stupid. It was just breathtaking in its arrogance.

only week 5, no undefeated teams left. those '72 Dolphins are doing their toast early this year.

A Brain Fart Scientist Explains Why NFL Players Drop the Ball at the Goal Line

Moderately interesting, but I don't think that "multitasking deficit" applies to Desean Jackson (who is mentioned briefly).
