ACC scheduling model. Looks like a 7 year rotating schedule with the “original” 14 teams making no more than 3 trips per seven year cycle to CA. And 8 conference games. Almost assures SMU will be a regular fixture on the Bears schedule.

So there are 52 California games in 7 years for the Atlantic teams, 26 each at Cal and Stanford. We need 28 home games, and Stanford provides the other 2, so it might be that we don't see SMU any more than any other team.

What's your caffeine routine? (if any)

I avoid it like the plague. At this point I have zero tolerance for it.

Every day, black, about 6 cups - good stuff every morning.

At home: Two 12 oz cups of coffee + milk in the morning. If the mood hits me, dark chocolate in the afternoon. Traveling: Cappuccino in the morning, espresso pick me up in the afternoon. Caffeine cut off ~3 pm.

Very rarely do I get a Mocha or a Latte. I don't think caffeine really wakes me up. Sometimes I'll get it if I have to get up early on the weekend for something like a Miata club drive, since those usually start right near a coffee shop

Best Mexican Mocha is Cole's Coffee on College a block from Boichick. Usually I get those in pairs. One of the best mochas is Red Whale Coffee in San Rafael.

Mrs Slug and I use heavy cream to doctor our coffee during the holidays (from mid-November to mid-January). That's because we use it for making whipped cream to top pies and as an ingredient in Aunt Ruthie's Egg Nog (ahem; recipe provided upon request).

I usually drink my coffee black even during that time, but it is fun on occasion to have that dose of heavy cream or whipping cream (not to be confused with whipped cream). Whipped cream is also fun as a change of pace.

I bought an apple watch a few weeks ago, mostly for the movement reminders and the integration with apple fitness, which is an appropriate toolset for someone who is in terrible shape and trying to get back to exercise. I think the best you could say is that I'm "building consistency" about exercise, but it's been useful to get some data on heart rate, and I'm doing a decent job of getting the extraneous notifications under control. I also like being able to change the watch face in a second or two.

Jazz Fest in New Orleans is a must attend. Only one of the many stages is actually jazz-- soooo much variety throughout the grounds, with huge headliners every year plus amazing food booths, and a can't-beat bar, music and food scene at night after the official Fest shuts down. Friday the 13th

Expand full comment
Oct 13, 2023·edited Oct 13, 2023

Friday the 13th occurs 48 times in any 28-year period that includes 7 leap years. It is possible to have a 28-year period with only 6 leap years. For that to happen, the century year must not be evenly divisible by 400. 1900 was such a year and 2100 will be another instance. But I digress.

Each month has a Friday the 13th four times in any 28-year period, one of those times in a leap year. Friday, October 13th occurred in 2000 (a century leap year) , 2006, 2017, and 2023. Friday, October 13 will occur in 2028, 2034, 2045, and 2051. You can repeat the pattern with certainty up to 2090.

In the past 28 years, there were 12 years in which there was only 1 Friday the 13th, including 1997 (June), 1999 (August), 2000 (century leap year; October), 2003 (June), 2005 (May), 2008 (leap year; June), 2010 (August), 2011 (May), 2014 (June), 2016 (leap year; May), 2021 (August), and 2022 (May).

In the past 28 years, there were 12 years in which there were 2 Fridays the 13th, including 1996 (September, December), 2001 (April, July), 2002 (September, December), 2004 (February, August), 2006 (January, October), 2007 (April, July), 2013 (September, December), 2017 (January, October), 2018 (April, July), 2019 (September, December), 2020 (leap year; March, November) and 2023 (January, October).

In the past 28 years, there were 4 years in which there were 3 Fridays the 13th, including 1998 (February, March, November), 2009 (February, March, November), 2012 (leap year; January, April, July), and 2015 (February, March, November).

Today in our stumbling, bumbling, crumbling democracy

The dysfunction within the GOP conference is palpable. This snippet from WaPo:

By Marianna Sotomayor

and

Leigh Ann Caldwell

Although Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) clinched the majority to become speaker-designate, it remains unclear whether he has the 217 votes needed to actually wield the gavel. What isn’t helping him in terms of garnering broader support is how his allies have behaved. According to two people familiar with the matter, Jordan allies threatened vulnerable Republicans representing districts that President Biden won in 2020, telling them that if they don’t vote for the Judiciary Committee chairman behind closed doors, they will get primaried. The threat was a huge turnoff for some moderates, who vowed never to support him.

COMMENTARY: These clowns can't get out of their own way. I'm amazed at what appears to outright and deliberate sabotage. This is surreal. You can't make this stuff up.

Certain House Republicans are open to Jeffries as speaker if Democrats make the right offer. https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2023/10/13/bipartisan-speaker/

“House Armed Services Committee Chairman Mike Rogers (R-Ala.) said it’s time for Jeffries and the Democrats to make an offer: “We’re willing to work with them, but they’ve got to tell us what they need.” Rep. María Elvira Salazar (R-Fla.) said “we’re open to anything that’s reasonable.” And a prominent moderate, Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.), added that “in the end, a bipartisan way may be the only answer, because we have eight to 10 people that do not want to [govern].”

House Republicans collapse into anarchy

https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2023/10/13/scalise-jordan-house-gop-speaker-chaos/

War in Israel. War in Ukraine. The federal government shutting down in 35 days. These are uncertain times.

But there is one eternal truth, one unwavering constant to steady us when all else is in flux: Every time the House Republican majority tries to govern, it’s guaranteed to turn into a goat rodeo.

And so it happened again this week, as Republicans tried to elect a new speaker to replace Kevin McCarthy, whom they deposed in a coup the previous week.

COMMENTARY: The author, Dana Milbank, writes about the various machinations and events of the past week. I was struck by the surreal aspect of the recitation, thinking, "You can't make this stuff up!"

We're in for a long haul before we get a new Speaker.

Expand full comment

I know the likelihood might be the same as Cal going 10-3 this year, but a Jeffries speakership with a half dozen GOP defections would be great

Expand full comment

Do you think any of this actually permeates down to average voter, in the sense that all this chaos demonstrates to average voter that GOP is unfit to govern and thus pushes them to vote Democrat in 24? I wish it would but somehow I doubt it

Expand full comment

Depends on how long it lasts. If it keeps going and we have a government shutdown because the GOP caucus can't get its shit together, then yeah I think average voters will notice.

Expand full comment

I think it makes a difference to the independent voter who truly doesn't lean towards the Dems or the GOP (rare).

However, there's also another factor at play here: voter enthusiasm. This could hurt the GOP candidates up and down the ballot as voters who identify with the GOP might have their enthusiasm to vote dampened by the recent shenanigans. This is why some Dems are discreetly cheering on the GOP dysfunction; the more the GOP reps look like clowns, the less likely their voters will go to the polls. Also, voters who identify with the House Freedom Caucus may also be discouraged by the inability of that Congressional faction to attain their goals.

What would really cement it for many voters would be if the Dems were able to pull off the political coup of the century - elect a Speaker while in the minority.

Expand full comment

I sure hope so. I mean it's anecdotes, but I've seen more than a handful of news pieces on former Republicans that are becoming disillusioned with the party – sometimes because of the extremism, sometimes because of ridiculous loyalty to Trump even in the midst of indictments, and sometimes because of a clear demonstrated inability to govern and propensity for stupid drama.

On this day in 2017 in Memorial Stadium the Golden Bears defeated Washington State 37-3. The Cougars went into the game ranked eighth in the nation but under first year coach Justin Wilcox, Cal would force seven turnovers and sack Wazzu QB Luke Falk nine times. Cameron Bynum had two interceptions for the Bears whose victory raised their record to 4-3. The offensive hero was quarterback Ross Bowers who connected on 21 passes in 38 attempts for 259 yards and a TD. He also had a spectacular seven-yard touchdown run/flip. Vic Enwere ran for 102 yards.
