My wife has been making a lot of new recipes recently, last night she made a Korean dish that was very very tasty for the first time: Ground Beef Bulgogi - and it worked pretty well with a Grenache 2013 wine as well! Bit of a surprise.
Can anyone confirm the Band's schedule tomorrow pre-game? I've got a friend who wants to see them march into the stadium. They usually perform in Sproul about 90 min before kick-off, correct? What time would that mean for arriving at the North gate?
Sproul Steps Concert is at 6:00 pm. They begin marching at Sather Gate at 6:30 pm. It's Alumni Band Day, so the Alumni Band will do its thing after the band begins marching up. Band should enter Memorial at approximately 7:00 pm.
If you've never done the parade with the Band, I highly recommend it. Lots of things happen that you only see during football season. Otherwise, 6:45 should be plenty of time to see the band march into Memorial.
When I was around junior high age, I didn't know how to cook yet, but my parents figured they could leave me alone and I could cook stuff out of a can, or have frozen food. So I had lots of practice with canned foods. I actually did like canned ravioli and beef stew. Sardines, herring. Canned hot dogs were not so good.
For frozen food, this was the pre-microwave age, and frozen dinners came in aluminum trays. I like a lot of these too.
Jarred tomatoes - yes, awesome, from Sardinia, also got a bunch of huge cans in 2020 super cheap as well, must have been an effect on the restaurants etc... from Covid
there is this Hawaiian place in NYC, Noreetuh, that has homemade musubi and one of the good ones has Spam. still out of a can i guess even though the others are more fish based.
I agreed until I had freshly harvested peas. They were much firmer, not as sweet, and overall much better. Otherwise, all those mushy, sweet peas are a hard pass from me.
obviously things like tuna or salmon, but recently i have come across very good fish/seafod from Italy or Spain like octopus, razor clams, mackerel, etc ..
I learned from my mom to use canned anchovies to make the Salted Fish and Chicken fried rice. Not quite the same as using dried salted fish, but not bad.
I tried canned creamed corn recently after not having had it since being a kid. Still not a fan though I do like corn in almost every other form. I have the "soggier" issue with almost all frozen veggies.
I have to confess I wasn't expecting Elon Musk to go full "Russian war crimes" fanboy. There's a line of thought that he's doing it to try and draw some kind of government embargo on his purchase of Twitter, but I don't think we can be too quick to rule out that he's just a colossal asshole.
Elon is a confusing contradiction of actions. On one hand, invests in the early stages of some interesting and potentially world changing companies and technologies (paypal, tesla, spacex), on the other....mouths off about stupid shit like taking tesla private if the stock price gets to 420, being a fascist fanboy for russia, dumping 75% of twitter employees, etc.

BERKELEY – California volleyball (7-11, 0-8 Pac-12) returns to Haas Pavilion this weekend, hosting Pride Night on Friday against USC (15-4, 7-1) at 7:00 p.m. PT followed by a matchup against UCLA (9-8, 3-5) on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
The contest against USC will feature a t-shirt giveaway to 75 lucky fans. For every ticket sold, the program will donate $3 to the LGBTQ Center in Oakland.
USC is one of the conference's top offensive teams and lands within the NCAA's Top 25 in hitting percentage, aces per set, assists per set and kills per set. They currently lead the Pac-12 in total kills and service aces, due in no small part to the contributions of three-time (and reigning) Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week Skylar Fields, who ranks fifth in the nation with 358 kills and sixth with 5.04 kills per set. The Trojans are no slouches on defense, either, as breakthrough freshman Gala Trubint has won two straight Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week awards (including last week's). She leads the conference with 298 digs and is second with 4.20 digs per set.
LOS ANGELES – The Cal men's soccer team suffered a 1-0 loss to UCLA on Thursday night at Annenberg Stadium, after playing a man down for most of the game.
With the conference setback, the Golden Bears' record fell to 3-6-4 (1-4-1 in the Pac-12). UCLA improved to 8-4-1 (3-2-1 Pac-12).
Cal could have taken the lead in the 21st minute, as Nonso Adimabua collected the ball deep in the UCLA box, but the Cal striker shot high.
CORVALLIS, ORE. – No. 25 California women's soccer recorded a road shutout in its match against Oregon State Thursday night, its seventh shutout of the season and sixth on the road in 2022. The win lifts the team's season record to 9-4-3 overall and 4-3 in conference play.
Angelina Anderson logged the 25th clean sheet of her career in the match, securing her second-place spot on Cal's all-time career shutouts list. Anderson was previously tied at No. 2 with Maite Zabala for her 24 career shutouts.
LONG BEACH, Calif. - The No. 2 California men's water polo team held off No. 6 Long Beach State in overtime, defeating the Tigers 16-14 Thursday evening at Ken Lindgren Aquatics Center.
Sophomore Max Casabella led the Bears with a career-high tying six goals, three of which came on 5-meter penalty shots. In a game that saw a tie score six different times, his three goals in overtime allowed the Bears to retake the lead that would give them the win.
WINDERMERE, Fla. – The California men's golf team will wrap up its 2022 fall schedule in the Sunshine State at the Isleworth Collegiate, co-hosted by Central Florida and West Virginia at Isleworth Golf & Country Club on Oct. 23-25.
Less than two weeks removed from winning the Alister Mackenzie Invitational – Cal's first team victory since spring 2019 – at Sonoma Golf Club, the Golden Bears will face off with 14 of the nation's top programs at the Isleworth Collegiate in Windermere. The three-day, 54-hole event is consistently recognized as one of the premier collegiate golf tournaments in the country. Formerly known as the Tavistock Collegiate Invitational, the Isleworth Collegiate was founded in 2003. Cal previously won the tournament in 2012 and 2017 and has participated in the event every year since 2011, other than 2020 when it was not held due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
BERKELEY – Cal Athletics will host the inaugural Cal Basketball Block Party on Sproul Plaza on Thursday, Oct. 27 to usher in the upcoming 2022-23 men's and women's basketball seasons.
The pep-rally-style event will run from 6-8 p.m. PT and is free to the public. It will provide a unique opportunity for Cal students and fans to interact with and get to know the faces of the Golden Bear basketball programs.
Festivities throughout the evening will feature an introduction of both the men's and women's basketball teams and head coaches Mark Fox and Charmin Smith, in addition to performances by the Bearettes, Cal Marching Band Drumline and Cal Dance team. Promotional items include free custom Cal T-shirts for the first 500 students in attendance, as well as Under Armour apparel prizes.
Dalton throws two pick sixes in less than two minutes. Saints lose 42-34 to Cardinals. The first pick six was epic as Marco Wilson went full superman over the goalline
Niners actually have a number of supplemental 3rd round picks in ‘23 draft, owe very little for THIS season, plan to restructure CMC’s deal, and figure to pick up a few more supplemental’s when Jimmy G & DeMeco move on (tho I’m not confident Jimmy G will EVER be gone considering he’s still here now…hahah)
IF McCaffrey stays healthy, it’s a great move….but he doesn’t stay healthy, nor do Shanahan RBs. Still, you gotta applaud the front office for at least making the bold move to snag a difference maker!
I assume the 9ers will let him leave after this season is over, but they would be assuming Trey Lance will be good to go next season. I don't see Lance doing too much during summer workouts. I guess they can bring someone else in and have him learn the system over the summer.
Until he’s in another uniform, I’m not holding my breath.
With this D (when healthy), he’s got a shot to win it all this year, tho he’s going to have to avoid the turnovers. The NFC is definitely winnable, but Sunday’s matchup will be a good indicator of whether this team can actually compete with an elite AFC offense.
watched the School for Good and Evil the other eve. not terrible, not great. Charlize Theron didn't get quite over the top "villain-y" as the dean of the school for evil as I'd hoped.
I keep trying to find Tolkien writing that matches what we see in The Rings of Power. Overall, worth a watch for fanboys, but struggles to make a stand-alone story that makes sense in the universe Tolkien actually wrote of. For example, there's many moments that the story just moves along even if the characters and plot have not really developed to that point. Kind of like a forced-march storytelling. Other notable flaws were somewhat confused moments that became either boring or simply cringeworthy. Overall, it seems very derivative of past efforts like Peter Jackson's, which, in many ways was derivative of Ralph Bakshi, who, even with his occasional flaws, made me sad when he did not finish the trilogy. Sorry, I am being vague, but these are thoughts that came to mind when watching. I doubt I will watch it again, unless my son insists.
One can envision all means of disastrous events this level of rivalry could lead to. I can just see ROTC field artillery being loaded with other than sound and smoke rounds, and it spirals further out of control from there!
I have long had concerns about that canon Cal has on tightwad hill. Given the well earned reputation for excursions involving loosely controlled substances in Berkeley, field artillery in a commanding location in the hands of those who may not be under the closest of command control seems to present risk!
Virginia gifted four turnovers + two failed 4th down conversions + two missed FGs to Georgia Tech. They still failed to lose to Georgia Tech as the Yellow Jackets only got 206 yards on offense. Cavaliers win 16-9. The teams combined to go 1-3 on extra points.
we also specifically went to lunch at our favorite IU sports bar at the time when the verdict was announced, but that was not as spontaneously exciting in the moment.
My wife has been making a lot of new recipes recently, last night she made a Korean dish that was very very tasty for the first time: Ground Beef Bulgogi - and it worked pretty well with a Grenache 2013 wine as well! Bit of a surprise.

You going? I am skipping this year, too much other stuff going on. Say hi to everyone if you go.
Yup, I'm going. Looooonnggg day, as usual. Noon rehearsal at Memorial.
I'll pass along your "Hi"s.
Thank you! So to be safe, we should plan on being at the North gate by 6:30-6:45, or just march up to the stadium with them...
If you've never done the parade with the Band, I highly recommend it. Lots of things happen that you only see during football season. Otherwise, 6:45 should be plenty of time to see the band march into Memorial.
A friend of mine was product manager for Roomba.
He is a Haas MBA
Something where the boxed/canned/frozen/jarred version is generally pretty good
As far as frozen meals go, most of the Marie Calender’s ones I’ve had are pretty good.
They are solid. A good thing to always have a couple in the freezer for quick, go to meals.
Chili- most any brand
Dude, if you're had my wife's chili, you would not think this much.
I know. But, still for canned food, it's pretty good.
By contrast, think about what canned tamales taste.
I really like the Hormel no Beans one. Similar to Tommy's
The Hormel no beans and a brick of cream cheese heated up on the stove and all stirred up makes a great dip for corn or tortilla chips.
oh that sound great. I might have to try that. What about Velveeta? I wonder if that would also work.
Stagg's Silverado
When I was around junior high age, I didn't know how to cook yet, but my parents figured they could leave me alone and I could cook stuff out of a can, or have frozen food. For frozen food, this was the pre-microwave age, and frozen dinners came in aluminum trays. I like a lot of these too.
the frozen dinners in aluminum trays seemed to taste more like REAL food than the current generation of microwaveable stuff.
Spaghetti-O's with little hot dog slices?
I just baked up some Trader Joe's frozen pain au chocolat and it's better than serviceable.
Everything frozen at Trader Joe's is so much better than it ought to be
I stopped going there because I was buying pita chips and cookies, which I overindulged on. These days I've cut down on carbs and sugar.
Jarred tomatoes - yes, awesome, from Sardinia, also got a bunch of huge cans in 2020 super cheap as well, must have been an effect on the restaurants etc... from Covid
Spam
"I DON'T LIKE SPAM!"
I cannot stand spam. Which is odd because I should like it based upon lots of other things I like. But nope.
spam.gif
no
i guess there is no "real spam" that comparable that doesnt come in a can
Yeah, I guess I view spam as ham in a can. I know that ham and spam aren’t the same thing but they are similar enough.
there is this Hawaiian place in NYC, Noreetuh, that has homemade musubi and one of the good ones has Spam. still out of a can i guess even though the others are more fish based.

Frozen peas...I love putting them in the colander and them draining the cooked pasta over them. Leaves them with a nice bite and vibrant green.
I hate peas in any and all forms.
I agreed until I had freshly harvested peas. They were much firmer, not as sweet, and overall much better. Otherwise, all those mushy, sweet peas are a hard pass from me.
Snow peas.
Frozen peas in the sixties were bad. Now, not so bad. But for years, I hated peas, except in pea soup.
This conjures bad memories of TV dinners. Uggh.
Even Whirled Peas? Visualize it.
tinned or canned fish can quite good.
obviously things like tuna or salmon, but recently i have come across very good fish/seafod from Italy or Spain like octopus, razor clams, mackerel, etc ..
I learned from my mom to use canned anchovies to make the Salted Fish and Chicken fried rice. Not quite the same as using dried salted fish, but not bad.
...sardines, herring, clams, oysters.
Canned or frozen corn. I like them both.
i prefer canned corn. the thawed frozen ones seems to get "soggier".
but they are both pretty good.
I tried canned creamed corn recently after not having had it since being a kid. Still not a fan though I do like corn in almost every other form. I have the "soggier" issue with almost all frozen veggies.
I agree. I prefer can corn to frozen for the same reason you gave. My dad has always preferred frozen so I don’t mind it.
Garbanzos
Black olives
Black beans
Refried beans
Mountain House chili mac is great when you are backpacking.
sometimes when my wife is out of town, the kids and i will have it for dinner at home!
frozen chopped spinach is perfectly fine for just adding in to something else
Jarred tomatoes can make a great base for pasta sauce
I use canned San Marzano like tomatoes for pizza sauce. Very simple. Just tomatoes, olive oil, and smashed garlic.
Also good for soups
Ukraine/Russia

Robot
IMHO, "Mr. Robot" is probably the best summary of the existential threat to our national security and future as a nation and world.
Asimov was a pioneer of robot storylines.
There were many robots in some of his earlier writings. When I was in third grade I read all of his juvenile Lucky Starr books, e.g., Lucky Starr and the Big Sun of Mercury, Lucky Starr and the Moons of Jupiter, Lucky Starr, Space Ranger, etc. These books had robot characters in them.
Actually Asimov's Three Laws of Robotics was first mentioned in Lucky Starr and the Big Sun of Mercury.
Speaking of him, the idea of turning his famous book into a show was a bad idea - didn't really work.
You refer to I, Robot? Was that the one with pre-slap Will Smith? I feel like I saw it but do not remember it at all.
Nah, TV show of The Foundation - it was just a bad idea in my mind for a show.
Ima Robot.
grass mowing robot .. we saw these in Sweden.
it looks a lot like a Roomba that goes around mowing your lawn once an hour or so. it seemed a little overkill to mow that often, but was sort of fun to see it wander around the garden.
We had one of these at our house in Italy last month. It was adorable and we very much anthropomorphized it and got sad when it went to hide.

Jimmy G is the college roommates friend who was supposed to be crashing on your couch for a week and it’s now been a year.
The difference is Jimmy G is actually doing a good job at something. And they don't and probably won't have a better option any time soon.
Hey that roommates friend was doing a good job of eating our food, drinking our beer and smoking our weed.
I assume the 9ers will let him leave after this season is over, but they would be assuming Trey Lance will be good to go next season. I don't see Lance doing too much during summer workouts. I guess they can bring someone else in and have him learn the system over the summer.

Would he want to stay here where he'll be behind Trey after he heals, or would he go somewhere else and get a chance to be QB1?
So do the 9ers have no picks in 2023 for the first 4 rounds? Was the 2023 1st traded as part of the Trey Lance 1st round pick trade?
Apparently this is where they’re at…
2023 draft:
3rd round pick (maybe from a draft day trade? - not sure source)
3rd round pick (compensatory)
5th round pick
5th round pick (compensatory)
7th round pick
7th round pick (via DEN)
7th round pick (compensatory)
2024
1st round pick
2nd round pick
3rd round pick (compensatory)
3rd round pick (POTENTIAL COMPENSATORY - DeMeco leaving to be HC)
3rd round pick (POTENTIAL COMPENSATORY - Jimmy G leaving in free agency)
4th round pick
6th round pick
7th round pick
So they’ll get some depth, if not elite high picks.
And I'm not sure they need elite high picks with the current roster. Depth is the thing.
And this FO can definitely hit with mid & late rounders. Given that the salary commitments aren’t devastating, I like the move.
How many more years of play does he have? Usually running backs have a shorter shelf life than some of the other positions.

Finished the Watcher….meh.
ELSEWHERE IN COLLEGE
We are rivals to UCLA, but not yet the level of fighting with molotov cocktails like Occidental College did.

More than a little tear gas has been used regarding the Axe and attempts to capture it.
Which does not yet come to the level of the time of Arlington State's airstrike on Tarleton State, which was limited by anti-air fire

One can envision all means of disastrous events this level of rivalry could lead to. I can just see ROTC field artillery being loaded with other than sound and smoke rounds, and it spirals further out of control from there!
Grapeshot into the center ranks of the Stanfurd band
Ah, I remember witnessing a few bullseyes of a oranges into a Sousaphone or two, but grapeshot would certainly elevate that snark.
I have long had concerns about that canon Cal has on tightwad hill. Given the well earned reputation for excursions involving loosely controlled substances in Berkeley, field artillery in a commanding location in the hands of those who may not be under the closest of command control seems to present risk!
Well we don't have to worry about YWC...
Pretty sure the fine Cal gets from the conference will be he least of your problems in the aftermath of that!
(Also the sink and the sign used as drums might serve as pretty effective shields!)

I had briefly considered watching that but I just wasn't in the mood for a sickos committee festival yesterday.
Then you missed the GT QB inadvertently (?) running out of bounds on the final play of the game
A ramblin' wreck, alright.
That was fucking insane - he was soooooooooooo bad as QB.
Figured the Cavaliers would never see that coming…did Musgrave assist with the Yellow Jacket game plan?
Virginia return man also forgot to call fair catch
