I read the WaPo article about the non-endorsement. I came away feeling like it was absolute cowardice, and utter nonsensical reasoning, to fail to make an endorsement for what very well may be the most consequential US Presidential Election since 1860.
The Post resorted to its history of endorsements to make the case that it shouldn't make an endorsement. To wit, that while The Post had made endorsements in almost every election from 1976 to 2020 (excepting 1988), it had not made an endorsement in prior elections excepting 1952, when it endorsed Eisenhower.
What also struck me in the same article was a quote from the daughter of the LA Times publisher, Nika Soon-Shiong, who wrote on social media that the decision not to endorse a candidate has prompted “controversy and confusion” and implied that the decision had to do with the Biden-Harris administration’s policies on Israel and Gaza.
“This is not a vote for Donald Trump. This is a refusal to ENDORSE a candidate that is overseeing a war on children,” she wrote. “I trust the Editorial Board’s judgment. For me, genocide is the line in the sand.”
Excuse me while I call BS on that reasoning. That's saying that Kamala Harris is personally responsible for Biden's decisions. Utter nonsense.
I am fully prepared for the ultimate irony in this election - single issue voters who place emphasis on the war in Gaza may very well find themselves staring at a Trump administration wholly unsympathetic, if not hostile, to their viewpoint.
It strikes me as somewhat akin to the idiots who voted for Brexit and then after the election said, "We didn't think it was serious!"
My wife and I have had sharp words with the LGBTQ community members when we volunteer with Human Rights Campaign. So many young adults who aren't going to vote for Harris (or Biden at the time) because of Gaza. One was our own trans-daughter. I think the phrase my wife used was "grow up, pull your head out of your ass and go fucking vote." It wasn't her finest moment, but the sentiment was 100% honest.
game 1 WS tonight. lots of Ohtani vs Judge hype, comparing it to Magic-Bird rivalry.
i guess people like to write about sensational stuff as a way to sell things. still, it wont really be a rivalry until it is one .. so we probably need to wait a few years.
Vikings were probably going to lose anyway, but they got ripped off on the called safety. Darnold was face-masked, which led to his being tackled. If he hadn't been face-masked, he probably escapes to throw the ball downfield.
The Competition Committee should review the non-reviewable clause. Even if it's to make a note that if the scoring play was the direct result of a foul, it can be withdrawn.
Honestly, I don't understand why the penalty wasn't called in real time. I don't understand how the official who signaled safety *didn't see* Darnold's head being pulled in a counterclockwise motion by the tackler's left hand,
Because the rules are "dumb as hell", to paraphrase DCTrojan's analysis of another recent officiation atrocity, and don't include it on the list of correctable (even when obvious) errors.
Short - like less than an hour - and it's funny, but her set hasn't evolved far from her core explicit oral sex schtick... so it's getting a bit tired. And she never mentions his name explicitly, but she's dating Bill Hader
Coach Nancy McDaniel - who was the founding head coach of Cal's golf program who retired five months ago has died of breast cancer. She was 57. I hate cancer.
The official visit season starts with Marlon Gunn (who takes an OV without an offer), Jaydn Ott, and Kaleb Johnson. Kaleb Johnson loves his visit and commits almost immediately.
Then Djouvensky Schlenbaker and Ashton Hayes visit. Both commit elsewhere so they're apparently off the table.
Then Jadyn Ott visits and commits shortly thereafter (Jul 21), so now we have two guys who are #1 RBs recruits!
Then in September Ott decommits. And less than a month later, Johnson decommits. Now we have no RB commits and we're scrambling and it's getting late in the recruiting cycle. We offer Marlon Gunn on Nov 10 as a backup. We then offer Ashton Jeanty on Nov 17th, even though Jeanty committed to Boise in September and he already has 14 other offers. November passes and its still crickets as we approach the December 15th early signing period and it's looking grim. On the 13th, Ashton Hayes commits and then Ott surprisingly commits on signing day on the 15th, so we end up with our two RBs.
So, yeah, we offered Jeaty but it was a hail mary offer because we had nothing and he never visited Cal.
What's happened to those players:
Marlon Gunn Jr (who eventually went to ECU and was #2 RB as a freshman, but has since fallen down the depth chart.
Kaleb Johnson is averaging 7.8 yards per carry for Iowa and already has over 1,000 yards. He was a starter as a freshman and is one of the country's best RBs.
Schlenbaker is an "or" starter for Wazzu. He is part of a rush-by-committee.
Hayes had a promising start at Cal, but then transferred to Nevada. He was a back-up when he transferred and then got buried in the depth chart as Nevada got more RBs. He then switched positions and started the year as an "or" starter at WR, but he has only caught a single pass, which goes to show that the "or" was an embellishment.
ACC showdown of the surprisingly good teams. Going into the game, it was 5-1 Syracuse at 6-0 #19 Pitt. Pitt only got had 217 offensive yards, but that's because Cuse QB Kyle McCord had a nightmare first half - tossing three pick sixes and and another INT that was just crazy luck to fall behind 30-0 at half. In total, McCord went 35/64 for 321, 0 TDs and 5 INTs. Pitt won 41-13. Check out this clip to see what I mean by "crazy luck".
I don't recall that, either. But I did notice that we got called for holding less. And I'm sure we got the benefit of the doubt in more than a couple of non-calls. Sometimes luck takes different forms.

Remember there were Greeks in Egypt.
The Middle East and North Africa were/are the crossroads of the World.
Okay, good point. I also have some Southern European, although not identified as Greek. It's supposed to be Italian.
Lots of crossovers. I have known Portuguese heritage, but 23 and Me shows 0.02% North African/Egyptian.

Another one. WaPo is not endorsing a presidential candidate.

Why was that not reviewable?
I don't know why it wasn't reviewable. As AndyPanda points out, it was a scoring play, so logically it should have been reviewable.
The play is reviewable, but you can't award a penalty based on review.
Oh I see.
I don't care for Darnold but when the penalty is obvious, it should be awarded.
Good point.
The Competition Committee should review the non-reviewable clause. Even if it's to make a note that if the scoring play was the direct result of a foul, it can be withdrawn.

Safety is a scoring play, so it should become reviewable.
Or if they won't review it, make a correct call in the first place!

Ashton Hayes was on STs with us and Nevad, both. And he dropped at least four returns total for both. He was promising, but has/had dropsies.

Pitt seems to be living this season with a four-leaf clover up their ass. When can this happen for Cal?
When we find the next Bruce Snyder or Jeff Tedford.
Well-coached teams make their own luck.
The thing is that I don't recall us even having much of this kind of luck with Tedford. The team was just better.
I don't recall that, either. But I did notice that we got called for holding less. And I'm sure we got the benefit of the doubt in more than a couple of non-calls. Sometimes luck takes different forms.
