nice French food article today

Among other things, Paris went to great lengths to preserve its fresh food market tradition

Paris embraced the “15-minute city” ideal — that everyone should be able to reach life’s essentials within a short walk or bike ride.

When No 1 was in Paris for his fellowships he lived by Place d'Italie. There were a couple of fresh markets and he could buy inexpensive everything every couple of days. Fish, veges, fruit (good but not comparible to Ca), meat, etc. Was pretty amazing. I went with him a couple of times to buy stuff for dinner that night.

traitor daughter and UW boyfriend are in Rome this fall. they are taking an Italian food and food culture course that is more about sustainability and civic rules than actually cooking or eating.

sounds like many of the same themes as the article.

one homework assignment is to avoid going to grocery store for a week. only shop at public markets.

I am interested to see the Puff Morris debut. I expect she can score, but how well will the offense develop with this roster; the Bears need a true point guard, able skillfully to distribute the rock to multiple 3-point shooters.

Warriors stumble against shorthanded Pacers

https://www.goldenstateofmind.com/warriors-scores-results/104635/warriors-pacers-steph-curry-pascal-siakam-aaron-nesmith

The lone silver lining to come from the Golden State Warriors bite-sized road trip is this: it’s over. Two days after losing by 10 to a Milwaukee Bucks team that was playing with Giannis Antetokounmpo, the Dubs stumbled late in the fourth quarter and loss to a woefully shorthanded Indiana Pacers team in search of their first win of the season.

After Indiana trailed by as many as 11 points in the fourth quarter, Jackson's 3-pointer with 1:09 left gave the Pacers a 109-107 lead. Butler dunked to tie the score at 109-all, but he failed to convert a three-point play.

Will Smith home run completes Dodgers Game 7 comeback to win another World Series

https://www.truebluela.com/dodgers-scores-standings/107051/dodgers-world-series-will-smith-yoshinobu-yamamoto-game-7

Will Smith caught more innings than any other catcher in a single World Series, and his 11th-inning home run gave the Dodgers their first lead of Game 7, and clinched a second straight championship with a 5-4 win over the Blue Jays on Saturday night and into Sunday morning at Rogers Centre in Toronto.

If the Dodgers are bad for baseball, why was the World Series so much fun?

https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2025/nov/02/los-angeles-dodgers-world-series-payroll?CMP=share_btn_url

Aunicorn led off the game with a single and then trotted out to the mound to pitch the bottom of the first. Another pitcher won Games 2, 6, and 7 of the World Series, throwing 17.2 innings along the way. A catcher set a record, squatting behind the plate for 74 Fall Classic frames and ultimately ended the series by hitting the final go-ahead home run.

Just as everyone feared or sneered, the Los Angeles Dodgers are champions. Again. In what some forecasted as a harbinger of doom, the sinister strategy of employing the best baseball player on the planet along with a generous number of his nearly equal peers proved effective. It’s not fair, some people will say in the coming months about the fact that the team broadly believed to be the best ultimately won it all.

Dodgers. The most evil teams are those in the largest media markets - Yankees and Dodgers. Each of those teams have a hapless foil in the same market (Mets and Angels).

Rinse and repeat with Chicago and until last year, the Bay Area. Just another reason to despise John Fisher.

[CNN.com] Worst weekend for air traffic controller staffing since start of shutdown

https://www.cnn.com/2025/11/03/us/worst-weekend-air-traffic-control-staff-hnk

Flight delays linked to the ongoing federal government shutdown continue, with this past weekend marking the worst for air traffic control staffing shortages since the shutdown began, according to a CNN analysis of Federal Aviation Administration operations plans.

Between Friday morning and Sunday night, there were 98 “staffing trigger” reports at FAA facilities, meaning air traffic controllers had to alter operations to keep the airspace safe with fewer people working.

The alterations can include rerouting planes or delaying flights when there are not enough controllers to handle the normal workload.

COMMENTARY: this is only going to get worse before it gets better. And another source (www.rawstory.com) reports that Duffy threatened to "shut the whole thing down" referring to commercial air traffic.

There is no plan other than to terrorize people with dire consequences. Sounds a lot like, "The beatings will cease when morale improves!"

I'm assuming they'll figure something out by Thanksgiving weekend, otherwise that travel is going to be bad.

Expand full comment
FiatSlug's avatar

Holiday travel is not the thing you want to have being a clusterf**k because there are no air traffic controllers. It's one thing if it's the airlines screwing up: that's expected. But delays or cancellations because of a lack of ATC staff brought on failure to pay them? Very bad idea.

I've tried it once. I thought I might be able to eat it but I had to spit it out. The combination of the horrible smell and the texture (maybe like raw chicken) was a no go. Almost 30 years ago a coworker bought one from Oakland Chinatown and brought it into work. The Indonesian boss and a different coworker had gone to Indonesia for a business trip and they had it. The boss has always loved it but the different coworker, who is white, had never had it but ended up loving it so someone bought one for all of us to try. I just couldn't do it.
