Currently in Hokkaido, Japan for work. Going back to Tokyo, then Kobe and back to Hokkaido next week. I haven't checked but must have gained a few pounds in just 4 days here. I feel so heavy.

I've got a business trip to Singapore next March. Trying to decide if I piggyback a visit somewhere on the way there or on the way back. Otherwise, it's a 17 hour non-stop from SFO. Not sure I want to do that all at once in Economy.

Maybe Taipei? I've never been and I would like to visit some day. But US to Taipei should be very long too.

Expand full comment

I was just there in Dec/Jan. It is a fun place to visit. Also did Osaka/Kyoto/Tokyo after Taipei. However, I did have to flu so I didn't get to enjoy it as much as I would've. Maybe I can find somewhere else in Japan to check out. I did Hong Kong back in 1997. And I've had two events in Seoul.

Maybe Hiroshima and Fukuoka in western Japan?

Oh that's an idea. The Mazda museum is outside Hiroshima I think. That would make it worth it.

I'm going to Athens for work the 1st-ish week for Dec. I need an AirBNB for my last night there because someone (not my work but the place that contracted us) is too cheap to pay for an extra night. Apparently they won't pay for an extra night after testing is over. I'm going to stay an extra day to sightsee so I'm looking for an AirBNB that last night. Luckily, it looks like I can easily get a place for < 100. The hotel we're at is the Grand Hyatt, so I'm looking just S of Lofos Filopappou park.

Does anyone have food recommendations? I don't know the layout so I don't know how hard it will be to go places around Athens after 6 PM to find good restaurants. Any suggestions would be appreciated. reminds me, I should check if Kod's restaurant list has any suggestions in Athens.

HAG and i are going to the Syracuse game, right?

I have a ticket for you. ATO is giving away tickets so I reserved an extra one. Not sure No 2 wants to wake up for a 12 PM game. No 1 and his GF are in town but they're going to be at his old roommate's wedding over the weekend.

does it seem strange that the states most likely to take long time to report results are also the major swing states?

maybe they are only highlighting the swing states ..

https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2024/us/elections/results-timing-presidential-race-calls.html?unlocked_article_code=1.Xk4.fv73.H_DKPqkK4pcw&smid=url-share

When to Expect Results in Each State on Election Night, and Beyond

Georgia counts fast (but watch the vote margin).

North Carolina counts fast (with new rules).

Pennsylvania is likely to take longer than election night.

Michigan could be faster than in the past.

Wisconsin is likely to finish most counting Wednesday.

Arizona could take days.

Nevada could take days.

Expand full comment

That is not true. California is slower than almost any state to report full results. You just don't notice because the top-line races are usually blowouts in favor of Democrats so can be called early. For some of the closer down-ballot stuff it can take up to two weeks before you know.

Expand full comment

I agree with this. I've experienced this many times w/r/t local measures, and sometimes with local candidates. I've seen races for local seats drag well into the second week. Never that long for POTUS, Governor, US Senator, or US Rep, unless it's a particularly tight race for a US Rep seat.

Expand full comment

Yeah, in 2018 (Trump's first midterm) there were a number of close House seats that took about a week before they could be called. I remember, because the mail ballot drops were trending heavily blue and wound up wiping out all of the Orange County Republicans. (They've since clawed back a few of those seats.)

Expand full comment

The article highlights the swing states at the top. Once you get through the 7 swing states, all of the states are listed below that group with thumbnail sketches of what to expect.

Prediction: Based on a presumed tied (or close to tied) race, I think the events of the last couple of weeks suggest that Harris is going to win. If she doesn't, it's because the electorate was just against Democrats this year in a way that polls couldn't adequately capture.

Expand full comment

While we Americans are worried, think about the poor Ukrainians. They stand to lose more than the Democrats if Trump wins. Hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian lives, innumerable billions of dollars in damage, and their national sovereignty swing in the balance.

Expand full comment

Totally! And then the follow on decrease in global security as a result of that…. Trump’s domestic failings get most of the headlines, but holy shit, he would be an unmitigated disaster on the international stage

Expand full comment

What happens to Ukraine as a consequence of this election is concerning. The United States stands as the leader in helping other democracies stand up to aggression from strongmen, like Putin. Before our political fabric was riven by extremism, Ukraine would have been a big political issue. It barely got any notice in this election year.

Expand full comment

Clarification. Most of you have seen the DBD memo that went out this morning, I'd like to point out a typo. It should have read: "there is a big election today." You'll note that an "r" mistakenly replaced the "l" in election and it has caused some confusion. We apologize for the error.

No. He was on Cal's recruiting board, but Miller Moss went to Bishop Alemany in Mission Hills, so it was presumed he it would be tough to tear him away from either UCLA or USC. He went started doing unofficial visits early - doing one to UCLA, Alabama, UCLA again, UCLA football camp, Cal unofficial, and then a third UCLA unofficial. As an outsider - I would have expected him to be a UCLA lock. But he did one more unofficial to Stanford four days later and USC two days after that and then stopped doing unofficials - which was a sign he made up his mind. He didn't use up any of his official visits and four month later, he committed to USC.

I’m in California and I dropped off my ballot this morning.

How did Californians vote on the props?

I voted no on 33, which was the rent control prop.

I voted yes on 34, I struggled with this and I bet this goes to court as it was basically a revenge prop against the AIDS Healthcare Foundation.

I voted no on Prop 36, which was the tough on crime to crack down on shoplifting and drug possession.

Expand full comment

No on 33, 34, and 36. The rent control one wouldn't do much of anything, except generate lawsuits. 34 will be thrown out by the courts if it passes. 36 just no, existing law is fine and taking decisions out of the hands of the courts doesn't help the problems at all.

Expand full comment

I also voted Yes on 34. All 3 of the rent control propositions in the last 6 (?) years have been because AIDS Heath Foundation has financed the signature gathering and campaigns from profits generated by a federal program to make medicines less costly. They are literally wasting money that could be better used to help people live healthier and longer. It's a huge waste and they have zero to show for it.

Expand full comment

Yeah, as I researched both 33 and 34 I read that AHF was responsible for the majority of rent control measures/props in LA and State of California, which I found odd for a healthcare non profit. I read that a lot of those funds came from profits from dollars that were supposed to be going to healthcare, which seems irresponsible to me.

Expand full comment

Housing can count as health care, so i can see where an interest might lie. However, these measures are a waste of time and won't solve the actual problems.

It’s time again for Oski Disciple’s Bear Facts.

Son Kai-Kee (aka Sam), the son of Chinese immigrants, was California’s first Asian American football player. He played quarterback on the freshman team in 1915 and was a backup running back for the varsity for three years though he didn’t see the field as either a sophomore or junior. Sam finally saw action in his senior year (1918) in games against St. Mary's, USC & Stanford. The diminutive Kai-Kee made up for his lack of bulk with great speed. Among his teammates in 1918 was Walter Gordon, the first African-American to play for the Bears. That year Kai-Kee and Gordon were members of the first Cal team to win a Pacific Coast Conference championship. In the 1940s another Asian-American back played for Cal, George Fong. George played for three different coaches, Buck Shaw, Frank Wickhorst and Pappy Waldorf. The first play from scrimmage in Pappy’s first game as a head coach was a 39-yard touchdown run by Fong at Memorial Stadium. Fong, a San Francisco native, started every game of the 1947 season, his senior year.

I voted on the second day of voting in a tiny rural county of barely 20,000 people to vote in a tiny little room with perhaps 10 voting tables. People were very southern - very polite to your face. But it's a deep red county with older poor white farmers who outnumber poor black townfolk in the biggest "city" that is only 2,000 people. I am literally one of eight non-black/hispanic POC in the county. The farmers primarily grow corn and tobacco, which will almost certainly will get hit by retaliatory tariffs if Trump is elected and cause domestic market prices to plummet. I am no longer surprised at how much people will vote against their own self interest.
