Harris Asked Voters to Protect Democracy. Here’s Why It Didn’t Land.

In more than 200 interviews, voters worried not about an endangered country, but about paying rent.

All of this is absolute horseshit. People love the hate. The get off on it. They are so excited to vote for someone who is going to harm the people they hate that they will vote for him forever. It's that simple and it's never going to show up on any poll, but it's as clear as day.

Harris just ran Clinton's campaign all over again, but with more pop stars. You can't shame America into voting for someone, but that's all the DNC knows at this point. Everything about how the DNC navigated Biden's 2nd run, his cancelation, and then the forcing of Kamala into the Democratic ticket without an actual primary was a total shit show. She was always qualified for the job, but has never shown the ability to actually campaign well. And it really showed.

More than any of the MAGAs, I'm livid at the Democratic party for falling asleep at the wheel and taking their stance as the "sane" party for granted. I'm livid at mainstream media for sane washing Trump and his antics, providing a huge double standard in terms of how he was presented vs. Kamala. I'm livid at mainstream media for immediately falling back to blaming black & latino voters when you just need to look at the white male statistics. And I'm going to stop, because the rest of my thoughts shouldn't be put in public until I've calmed down.

Edit: Oh yeah, and f*** Californians for thinking convicts don't deserve basic human rights. We can get off our high horses. We've now voted against gay marriage and for slavery -- we're not better than anyone else.

Expand full comment

Pretty much that. ^^^^ Again, it's the economy, stupid.

You can't run a campaign on preserving democracy when people are worried about being able to eat, stay warm, have a home, and a job that pays well enough to earn those essentials and a few nice things to take your mind off your paycheck-to-paycheck existence. Democracy quickly becomes secondary, even tertiary, if you're poor and don't feel safe.

Sanewashing Trump is the byproduct of the opposition (Dems) failing to run a campaign on the bread-and-butter issues that highlight just how bad Trump is. The Dems could have run rings around Trump on economics, immigration, and foreign policy but failed to do so. They ceded the ground on all three issues. That's called POLITICAL MALPRACTICE.

A chicken in every pot trumps vague, specious, hysterical claims.

Expand full comment

I dunno, Trump was pretty hysterical - the weird focus on demonizing transexuals and immigrants was pretty bananas. I think the D message could have been better, but really the problem was not primarying Biden and trying to run on a new candidate in only about 90 days

The TV campaign here in swing state GA highlighting trans support by Harris and Dems was very effective marketing for those in the middle who felt that too much Dem focus has been on those types of things vs food on the table, money in pocket. Think Sparky from 80s/90s Berkeley in less cloths and clown make-up. It was RELENTLESS. Not sure how hysterical Trump actually was on the topic, he just knew what buttons to push (he is a marketer by trade, not a builder).

Expand full comment

Yes of course that is effective but:

1. Those are GOP ads you are talking about, taking snips of comments from debates from years ago. This is not actually an issue of Kamala focusing too much on these issues in this election. The only ppl talking about this are Republicans.

2. To the idea that GOP is talking about kitchen table issues…. Yeah right!!!! Lol. WTF does this have to do with the kitchen table??????? It’s just lizard brain hate stoking nonsense. It works, no doubt, but give me a fucking break about the idea that GOP is being practical and Dems are not.

In retrospect, pushing Biden out was only rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. Which leads to my most biting criticism of the Democratic party leadership - they are incrementalists when they need to fully reassess issues and their platform and offer the American polity a new direction.

The one thing that frightens me most about the next Trump presidency is the isolationism and the degrading of America's relationships with our allies. That and the likely devastation from the wars in the Ukraine and in Gaza. The loss of human life could have been prevented by defeating Trump; truly, this is a tragedy of immense proportions. That he wasn't defeated is on the Democrats.

Expand full comment

Yes, my concern is the same. The cascading dominoes of T pulling support for Ukraine, Ukraine losing badly, China becoming emboldened to invade Taiwan, and so on…

Hope it does not happen! There is maybe a sliver of hope in a broken clock is right twice a day kind of way, in that T is buddies with Putin but really adversarial with Xi, and so perhaps that may damage the relationship between those two dictators

Expand full comment

And re the D party - agree! Just a run a goddamn primary; it is not complicated. They need to stop putting their thumb on the scale and annointing ppl the presumptive nominee, like HRC in 16 and Zombie Joe this year. They tried to annoint HRC in 08 too but thank god the voters were given other options as well

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Entering the ACC Championship, the California men's soccer team was the only conference team – out of 15 – that wasn't awarded a penalty kick this season. But that changed in Cal's first-round match at 14th-ranked North Carolina's Dorrance Field on Wednesday night. Tied 1-1 – after trailing 1-0 early – the Golden Bears earned a penalty kick when Malcolm Zalayet was fouled in the box, and junior forward Alfredo Ortiz converted the chance to give the Bears a 2-1 lead over the Tar Heels it wouldn't relinquish.

It’s time again for Oski Disciple’s Bear Facts.

James “Jimmie” Schaeffer coached California in their first season after the permanent switch to football, 1915. Schaeffer was a one year transitional coach, he’d served as head coach the previous six seasons when the sport was rugby. Perhaps Schaeffer’s greatest accomplishment for the university was discovering his successor, Andy Smith, then coaching at Purdue. Schaeffer had been touring the midwest trying to accumulate football knowledge from successful coaches for his one year stint when a bartender suggest he meet with Smith. Upon talking to the young coach Schaeffer became convinced that this was the man to lead the Golden Bears into the football future. It took some doing but he convinced the California administration to hire the Pennsylvania native. Meanwhile Schaeffer didn’t do bad at all with the ’15 squad going 8-5 including a season-ending victory in Los Angeles against U$C, 23-21, avenging a loss against the same team in Berkeley earlier in the year. Three of that season’s contests were against the Olympic Club (all wins). One was a loss to the Commercial Club and there were wins against Originals and Sherman Indians. Two games each against St.Mary’s and Washington and one against Nevada rounded out that season’s schedule. Schaffer never had a losing season in six seasons as a head coach at California.

Oski Disciple’s Bear Facts appears Tuesday through Thursday on the DBD throughout the 2024 college football season.
