Their transition to an FBS-level conference has been shockingly successful. Bball is ranked, football is currently undefeated, ranked, and 18-3 since last year
My co-worker knew that we were doing axe-throwing for a team building event. I mean, drinking + axes; what could go wrong? So he practiced on his own time so that he could be good at it. He came in second, choking in the finals. I just got done with a meeting with him today. He just told me how he played a prank on the winner, having the trophy (which was an actual hatchet mounted on a piece of wood) hidden in the winner's desk and then having facilities and the head of legal compliance contact him to tell him he was being investigated for having a weapon in the office. That ruse only lasted a few minutes because otherwise the prank would have been too cruel - but it was well played.
Right-wing Virginia activist wants to split state into two states citing 115 years of progressivism. I blame the kids and their new fangled ideas of refusing to let states secede from the Union in order to own black people.
Virginia has split into two states at least twice that I am aware of:
1792 - Kentucky was admitted to the Union as a separate state, splitting from Virginia.
1863 - West Virginia seceded from Virginia and was admitted to the Union as a separate state.
In both instances, geography played a role. Kentucky was so far removed from state government that it made sense for the split to be formalized and agreed to by Virginia.
In the case of West Virginia, however, the secession of Virginia from the Union played an even bigger role. Many West Virginians thought that Virginia's secession wasn't legal because it had been an act carried out by the legislature and not a vote of the people. Therefore, the secessionists were in rebellion and had vacated their offices. The West Virginians sought to remain in the Union and asserted that they were the lawful government of Virginia. If they chose to consent to the western counties seceding from the secessionist eastern counties, they had accomplished the requirement of consent of the state government and applied for statehood. Voila, Congress gave its assent and the state of West Virginia was born.
Probably oversimplified, but it'll do for the purposes of discussion.
When I was in high school in California in the 70s, in Government class it was brought up that there was a group who, every year, proposed splitting California in two. It was not a new idea even then.
If you feel your power waning, secession is a way to preserve some of it or maybe become a stumbling block for your antagonists.
I would be less likely to oppose re-forming state boundaries if there wasn't a US Senate or an Electoral College. In that case, it's just moving populations around. The problem, I see, though, is increased polarization by moving boundaries. That's not in the interests of a thriving republic.
In a surprise move, Speaker Johnson appears to be advancing a stopgap funding bill to keep the Federal Government running into next year, which will require the help of Democrats. If the Democrats approve it, it means the contents are palatable to Democrats. I am quite surprised that Johnson is going to fall on his sword for the good of the Government and allow Gaetz and Clown Company boot him from his role in an unending loop of Speakership suicide & compromise. Who in their right mind would volunteer to be the next Speaker du Saison?
A better question is what will it take for the so-called GOP moderates to abandon the GOP's extreme right wing and make common cause with the Democrats to avoid a shutdown? I'd think the GOP House members who were elected from Districts that voted for Biden in '20 would be the most likely to vote for a reasonable CR, one that sticks to the deal negotiated by McCarthy and Biden.
Remember, it's the HFC who wants to burn down the federal government.
House Ethics Committee report on Rep George Santos will reportedly be out on Friday. It is rumored to be damning and there is expected to be a bipartisan move to oust him. If he's ousted, the governor (who is a Democrat) has 10 days to call a special election. The seat is expected to be a close race, but favors the Democrats, so the election is expected to be called.
Bills lose in terrible fashion to Broncos 24-22. The Bills woes were numerous, but the cherry on the shit sundae was having too many men on the field when the Broncos missed a game-ending field goal, allowing the Broncos to then make the game winning field goal as time expires.
And in the previous set of downs before the field goal they sacked Denver on 2nd down to force them into 3rd and 10 outside field goal position. Next play is a PI on a severely underthrown ball from Wilson, which set up that game-winning field goal. Truly, a masterpiece of a final drive by the Buffalo defense.
I was just reading the Metro section of the paper while eating lunch. In the obits, an obit for Richard Moll, the guy wo played the bailiff on Night Court. It says he studied history at Cal. Who knew? He was 80 and six foot eight inches so would have been prime for a hoopster at that time.
Keonte Kennedy is really going to help this team defensively upon his return in the next few weeks. He’s a lock-down defender that can match up with the opposing team’s best scorer…could have used him last night v. Higgins. This team will look different and should get better.
BERKELEY (AP) – Jalen Cone tied a career high with seven 3-pointers and scored 23 points, Jaylon Tyson flirted with a triple-double and California cruised to an 83-63 victory over CSU Bakersfield on Monday night in Haas Pavilion.
Cone made seven of his 16 shots from beyond the arc – including five first-half makes – for the Golden Bears (2-1), who bounced back from their first loss of the season last Friday. Tyson, playing in his second game as a Bear after missing the season opener, totaled 13 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists. Fardaws Aimaq posted 14 points and seven boards while Devin Askew and Grant Newell scored 12 and 10, respectively, as all five starters finished in double figures.
BERKELEY – The California women's basketball team (3-0) used an impressive shooting display in the first quarter to build a 19-point lead and come away with a 74-60 win and improve to 8-0 all-time against Cal Poly (1-3) at Haas Pavilion Monday afternoon. Five different Bears hit a 3-pointer in the first quarter, led by Ioanna Krimili who went a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the arc. Leilani McIntosh passed former Bear and current WNBA player Layshia Clarendon to move up to the eighth spot on Cal's all-time career assists list (399) and is just six away from moving into the seventh spot.
A lights out start and a slog to the finish. The Bears scored 29 points in the first quarter and a combined 25 in the second and third. Managed 20 in the final frame. Nice to put in a mostly awful performance and still win comfortably.
BERKELEY – The California football team picked up three Pac-12 Player of the Week honors on Monday when the conference announced its' Week 11 performance awards, presented by Nextiva. Cade Uluave was selected as both the Defensive and Freshman Player of Week for his performance in a 42-29 win over Washington State last Saturday, while Brian Driscoll was named the Offensive Lineman of the Week.
BERKELEY – Many traditions and events take place during the week leading up to the annual Big Game between Bay Area rivals California and Stanford. Below are highlights of known activities and public events in the Cal community during Big Game Week. In addition, Wheeler Hall, Doe Library, Campanile and Sather Gate on the Cal campus will be lit in blue and gold (Sunset until 2 a.m. PST) ahead of Saturday's 3:30 p.m. kickoff at Stanford Stadium. The game will be televised by Pac-12 Network.
BERKELEY – The California men's golf program signed three future Golden Bears to National Letters of Intent last week, Alex and Marie Shipman Director of Men's Golf Walter Chun announced Monday. Kai Hirayama, Matthew Miyamoto and Ziqin (Eric) Zhou will arrived in Bear Territory ahead of Cal's 2024-25 campaign.
On this day in 2009 in Memorial Stadium the Golden Bears defeated Arizona, 24-16 raising their record to 7-3. Shane Vereen’s 61-yard touchdown run with 1:21 remaining capped off the victory. Jahvid Best gave the Bears an emotional boost a week after being carted off the field following a frightening concussion by participating in the opening coin toss and watching the game from the sidelines. Giorgio Tavecchio kicked four field goals including a 22-yarder with 4:46 to go that gave Cal the lead for the final time. Tavecchio’s heroics weren’t over just yet as he made a TD saving tackle on the ensuing kick off. Shortly after that tackle the Wildcats were in field goal range at the Bear 25 but on third down QB Nick Foles’ pass was batted back to him by Tyson Alualu. Foles threw the pigskin again resulting in a 15 yard penalty and fourth and long. After an incompletion the Bears took over and Vereen took off for the TD that provided the final margin.

This California State Library website https://www.library.ca.gov/collections/online-exhibits/splitting-ca/ says that there have been at least 220 attempts to split California.
That's roughly 1.27 attempts or proposals per year since 1850 (the year California was admitted to the Union).
