Jerry Rice. GOAT.

The numbers he put up back in the day are pretty amazing. The rules were not nearly as friendly to the passing game in those days but he still out-produced everyone who came after him.

I-80. During Covid, I drove back to Philly with No 1 (he had driven out, stopping off and picking up a couple of friends in Louisville visiting their parents that lived in SF) so he didn't have to drive it alone. We took it all the way from the Bay Area to Eastern Ohio, at which point we went to Pittsburgh. I don't think i've driven on 80 East of that point.

Expand full comment

Growing up we used to visit Nebraska relatives every few years. I would guess half the time it was 80 straight through. The other times we would go up through Yellowstone.

Expand full comment

I've driven all of the New Jersey portion of I-80 in addition to all of the California and most of the Nevada portions of I-80. Come to think of it, I've also drive in a tiny of Pennsylvania on I-80 (eastern PA), a few miles west of the Delaware Water Gap. I have driven essentially nothing of I-80 between Elko, NV and East Stroudsburg, PA.

i have driven all of i-80 except the section between Cheyenne and Chicago, only about 1000 miles!

Bob Dylan 82 - mostly a blues guitar set of his own music, no greatest hits were played

Steve Miller 80 - another blues guitar set of classic Delta and Chicago blues, also no greatest hits were played.

On this day in 1974 in Memorial Stadium the Golden Bears defeated Washington State, 37-33 to raise their record to 7-2-1 heading into a Big Game that they would lose in heartbreaking fashion. It was Mike White’s third year at the helm and marked his first winning season and only the third time Cal won as many as seven games in a season since 1952. Quarterback Steve Bartkowski was California’s hero on the day as he connected on 21 of 30 passes for 300 yards. This gave him a season total of 2,262 passing yards surpassing the school record set a decade prior by Craig Morton. The Bears forced ten Cougar turnovers, four fumbles and six interceptions. The last turnover came in the game’s waning moments when Wazzu fumbled inside the Bear five-yard line. The Sturdy Golden Ones had a touchdown negated by the officials just before halftime. A Washington State fumble was run back for an apparent score as signaled by three refs, but a fourth official had inadvertently blown his whistle. Cal DB Herm Edwards ran back an interception for a TD that was not called back.

Imagine that. Had the Cougs not suffered their 10th turnover, they probably would have won a game in which they turned the ball over 9 times. One way or the other, that sounds like a WSU-Cal classic that would be the envy of Sonny Dykes and Justin Wilcox.

COOL THINGS TO DO IN DENVER

Expand full comment

My buddy is flying in from Australia. So my buddy from Austin and I are thinking of flying to Denver because it's somewhere in the middle, it's a flight hub, and flights are cheap to get there. While I've been to Denver, I've never really hung out there. Anybody have recommendations for good restaurants or cool things to do for a bromance weekend?

My friend's favorite sushi restaurant there is Sushi Den. Tavernetta was pretty good, and just outside Union Station. Obviously there are a lot of breweries!

- Death and Co for cocktails

- there are some great restaurants in the RINO (River North Art) district. there is some fun walking around and shopping too.

- Dio Mio for casual Italian

- Uchi Japanese/sushi

- Safta Israeli - was the best food we had

- if you have a car and the weather is reasonable a short drive up to Red Rocks is a great way to spend a few hours. a nice/short hike and it is fun to see the concert venue even if there is no show. there is a music themed museum at the top.

- Frasca Italian - Michelin star Italian in Boulder, one of the best meals i have ever had. ask for the vintage amaro after dinner. not cheap.

- walk around the main street in Boulder, good food, beer, shopping.

- a short/easy hike to see the Flatirons is well worth it. even if you just drive there and take photos it is pretty impressive.

I have heard that pickle juice is very effective when dehydrated and cramping. Sometimes people take the single serving pickle packs and eat one and drink the juices.

Ontario to require posting pay range in job posting. I think that's a good idea. Fighting discrimination is one thing, but it also counter's the Western cultural norm of discussing salary last, which is a waste of time if the salary isn't in the right ballpark. I appreciated in Asia that it was okay to discuss salary first.

Senate passes House Bill to extend keeping the Federal government running

11 voted against, 2 abstained.

The 11 against: Blackburn (R-TN, Braun (R-IN), Crapo (R-ID), Lee (R-UT), Paul (R-KY), Risch (R-ID), Schmitt (R-MO), Scott (R-FL), Tuberville (R-AL), Vance (R-OH), Bennett (D-CO). Bennet was a symbolic no because he objected that it didn't have support for Ukraine.

No vote: Cornyn (R-TX), Scott (R-SC).

WaPo runs an article about the destruction that the AR-15 has done to the US via mass shootings. The paper publishes full color photos never seen before of mass shootings. I've seen some bad things over the years. But the photos of school shootings made me cry and feel physically nauseated for the first time. I know about shootings. And I knew there would be blood. But seeing how much gore from children - including one photo where you can see the Uvalde shooter had time to dip his hand in his victim's blood and write LOL on a whiteboard while cops sat outside hiding has shaken me to my core. A terrible view, but something that the article effectively delivered its message.

I think Obama missed an opportunity after Sandy Hook. Ban assault weapons via executive order, should have done it while the outrage was full-on. Would have created years of litigation (and confrontations), but it is otherworldly crazy that this is allowed to go on.

Obama tried. Too many in Congress were in the NRA's thrall. There was not enough outrage.

Without people being shocked tot heir core by looking at the gory mess, and taking in the loss of life, the trauma to the survivors and communities, the NRA will continue to hold members of Congress in thrall.

Trump's take on foreign policy is regressive and ignorant. I stumbled on a Larry King interview with him from some time in the late eighties, early nineties, where he is questioning why we send money to other countries and asking what we get in return. No surprise, his worldview has not changed or grown, not even while he was president. The guy is so obsessed with immediate, transactional return--the MO of a narcissist--that the concepts of soft power and enlightened self interest are beyond his grasp.
