Welcome to the Daily Bear Dump, a W4C community board where you can talk about pretty much anything. How about scoop-and-scores? See the 1-minute mark.
Go to 1:47 on the video highlights. A little more than two minutes to go. Stanfurd gets the ball back after forcing Cal to punt, but has stalled after two straight incomplete passes. It's 3rd-and-10 from their own 28. Stanford comes with a double-receiver formation with TE/WR hybrid Ben Yurosek split out but pretty close to the line. Cal defense has a nickel package that has Cover 2. OLB Jernigan is showing blitz, leaving ILB Sirmon to cover Yurosek. It's a mismatch, one that McKee should focus on and he does. McKee only looks at Yurosek as the ball is snapped, but Sirmon is still on him because he's given him six yards of buffer. So McKee double clutches waiting for Yurosek to pull away. McKee throws as Yurosek has a tiny amount of separation on Sirmon. McKee needs throw a bullet in a tiny window beyond Sirmon. But he doesn't. He leads Yurosek too much and the ball isn't a bullet - right into what Cover 2 is supposed to guard against... mistakes thrown up the middle. The end-zone camera catches a good look at it:
the guy who officiated our friend's wedding this weekend did exactly that about a week ago.
he implied he paid $40 or something
in grad school, as something of a joke we decided to get one of our friends a " free doctorate in divinity" and make him a reverend. we figured he it would be good consolation for failing out grad school (which he did not).
Allegedly, he told them to fuck off. They dropped him as a client.
SBF is now being represented by David Mills - a Stanford law school professor and a colleague of his parents. Must be nice to have those type of connections.
It's a Federal crime, so no parole. One can get some time shaved off for good behavior, but she'll do a minimum of a decade. I wonder if she'll introduce herself to her cellmates in her low voice or her normal voice.
I like some of songs listed, some of them not so much, but one of my faves doesn't have a long intro - but instead a long and interesting ending: Deerhunter - Desire Lines:
There are a bunch of songs from the 80s and 90s of big name artists that had long introductions because it was part of the video production. So... bonus points if you can name one that was NOT during that era (eg, Hotel California).
Deep Purple's "Lazy" (1972) goes over four minutes without any lyrics, the first half of which comfortably qualifies as intro. https://youtu.be/dqM5L5JQseI
Boston's "Foreplay/Long Time" (1976) has a 2.5 minute intro.
For a more recent example, Death Cab for Cutie's "I Will Possess Your Heart" (2008) has a solid 4 minute intro, all of which is cut for the radio edit. https://youtu.be/pq-yP7mb8UE
I think Dire Straits' "Money for Nothing" should get special mention here. The song had a long introduction (>2 minutes) and the music video actually trimmed off a minute to be shorter. The guitar riff from 1:36 is still so good.
we saw Mark Knopfler in concert a few years ago in NYC. it was an amazing musical experience and hearing them play "Money for Nothing" was the highlight of the evening.
Thousands of supporters, including England and United States fans, faced chaos at the World Cup in Qatar on Monday as the FIFA app crashed, meaning they were unable to access their tickets.
An organiser of an American fan group confirmed to ESPN that tickets on the FIFA ticketing app, which fans planned to use to enter the stadium, "disappeared" from accounts, and also left fans unable to transfer tickets to individuals with whom they planned to attend the U.S. men's national team's match against Wales, set to kick off at 10 p.m. local time.
I always double check that I've moved the ticket to my Wallet app, can't trust cell service at any venue due to overload. For example I can do anything on my phone until kickoff at Memorial, once the game starts texts take forever and checking scores is sometimes impossible.
I've noticed T-Mobile is real bad when you have lots of people in a small area, like a sporting event. Generally it isn't too bad in a city. At least that's what I've noticed. Also I think at pro events, they do work better. I imagine they run multiple repeaters. Inside my house, the signal sucks so I called them and they sent me a repeater for free. Connect it to the internet and 5 bars around my house.
Good thing they didn't need extra time, and therefore the inevitable extra stoppage time. Continues to fascinate me how soccer can't operate a game clock.
We had a great experience with Carvana in 2020. They offered $3k more than anyone else for our old car and since I had researched and test driven the type of car I bought I was pretty confident in my decision even though I hadn't seen the actual car. But that's only my experience.
I think selling a car through them <so>is</so> was worth it. I had heard they were offering much more than you could get in a private sale. Plus they make it hassle free to sell.
I sold my wife's first-version Highlander hybrid in 2014. We got a Carmax offer that was extremely low. I then went home, spent 6 hours detailing it on a Saturday, and had it sold by Sunday for $5k more than what Carmax offered.
I've learned two things in car purchases over the years: 1) If you have a make or model that is in demand, sale your car on the private market; and 2) Get prequalified for financing from your bank if you are financing any portion. The first rule yields more cash, while both number one and number two reduce the amount of negotiating that needs to be done with a dealership and allows you to focus solely on the purchase price.
This may seem a bit unethical, but we use Carmax to sample a variety of makes and models, then once we've narrowed it down, usually see if we can get a better deal elsewhere, including purchasing a new, marked down version from a dealer. It saves an incredible amount of time if you truly want to do some sampling as you can window shop at one location.
I think the difference between Carmax and Carvana is that Carmax doesn't overpay for cars. I don't know if Carmax charges more or less than Carvana for the same car.
Trump framed Truth Social as the alternative to Twitter. Now, Trump can choose Twitter and admit the failure of his own platform, or refuse to admit failure and have a much smaller audience. Seriously, is Musk Trolling Trump and his vain ego with this decision?
I also quite liked the the Cal band playlist - was in my mind a reference to the songs that would have played in 1982 - and the first song from the Talking Heads - Psycho Killer - with Oski killing the tree with the ax was perfect.
Well, I was frustrated by Plumber's first half interception, I called the second half Cal interception and score *before* it happened, so my group credited me with calling the win.
Assuming Milner is higher risk, higher reward and Plummer, lower risk, lower reward, I am curious to know how much of Wilcox' coaching philosophy plays into QB-1. Then again, we all thought Tedford was committing coaching malpractice by refusing to play Kline instead of Maynard, only to discover there was good reason this never occurred. Ever since, I am less adamant about starting one player over another in these situations.
Convinced Plummer is a practice warrior, and Wilcox is naturally conservative so he’ll gravitate to the guy that makes less mistakes.
That said, Plummer’s pass in the 4Q was literally one of the worst plays I’ve seen from a Cal QB in 40 years of watching the team. Against a better team, it could’ve cost them the W.
I agree, I think Wilcox will choose the QB less prone to mistakes but potentially with less play potential. If so, hopefully he trusts the new OC to make this call.
Kevin Riley, 2007, Oregon State was one of the worst plays I've seen by a Cal QB since following Cal football as a student in 2003. .
I'm not sure when was the last time Memorial Stadium had that kind of raucous atmosphere. Felt a bit like the Tedford days again. Absolutely electric during that fourth quarter.
Yeah, I know it was just one high point in an otherwise dreary season, but sometimes you've got to take what you can get.
When I heard it was a sellout, I assumed there would be a large contingent of Lobsterbacks in the crowd. I was glad to see they only had a couple sections and the rest of the crowd was dominated by blue and gold.
I was shocked to see a packed Memorial Stadium on TV. Never thought we could fill up so soon. The admin should take note and try their best to fill it up constantly.
Great tailgate food, sliders, from GO and GO's lady friend. Nos 2 and 3 were here for Thanksgiving so they, along with No 3's GF, came to the game. Was a little worried we wouldn't be able to sit in our usual area but I guess it's an "open" seating for students? Worried until the scoop and score. Though Furd didn't move the ball as well after the first 2 drives, other than their opening drive in the 2nd half. The D really turned it up. It did get loud.
Not sure how it can be a sellout when half of the seatbacks are empty.
I think a lot of the people who have those seatback tickets also spend time in the club area. So those seats are sold and the attendance counted but people aren't always sitting in them.
I was watching some highlights of the Big Game. As part of the B-roll of those highlights, GO popped on the screen leading the introduction of the Cal Drinking Song.
At a bar in my hometown at a viewing hosted by Stanfurd Alumni group. As typical, we were way outnumbered. The Stanfurd alumni failed to applaud or even acknowledge when their own team scored, which seemed very on-brand. I have to admit, I had lost all hope by Q3 as 11 points seemed insurmountable. Q4 was a delight and I was overjoyed to be have my pessimism thrown back in my face.
My favorite part was when Stanfurd got the ball back with 54 seconds to go and David Shaw - rather than go for an improbable win - chose to meekly do short yardage passes and angle for the walk-off game-losing/spread-beating field goal.
Anxiety for three quarters. Jubilation in the fourth. Rushing the field in the aftermath. With the Axe remaining safely in Berkeley, it was a great day. Got my photo taken with j Michael Sturdivant as a bonus.
Saturday affirmed why I will never give up on Cal football. Hanging out with friends, socializing, cheering, seeing a glorious victory. Can't beat it.
A tree in my neighbor's yard couldn't take the loss. It fell over yesterday morning and exploded onto the street. We cleaned it up and now I have a ton of extra firewood.
Had no interest in Spirited (Ferrell, Reynolds on ATV+), but gave it a go on Saturday. Was pretty darn good. Several twists to make it not just a humorous version of A Xmas Carol.
Doctor Zhivago on TCM. DVR'd it in case I watch it at some point. But probably won't bother. Did watch the end of 2001: A Space Odyssey when the old Keir Dullea turns into the star child.
in case anyone has any good ideas AV ideas.. trying to setup an extra basement TV for my wife so she can workout.
her primary method is getting on a Zoom w/ a bunch of friends on laptop and one of the people shares screen and streams some online video that they all do together.
i was thinking of just a chromecast type device where she can cast to a bigger screen.
the issues are
1 - sound to an old monitor w/ no speakers - do i get a small set of external speakers?
1a- i have an older TV w/ built in speakers but it is a slightly smaller screen
2 - camera, the casting bit might fine, but no one will be able to see her before/after class on the Zoon unless there is a small camera on this extra monitor
maybe i just do nothing and the laptop is the best solution. seems overkill to set up an office-quality video setup for a conference room.
The older TV with builtin speakers probably has an option to send audio to external speakers. I wonder if you can find used speakers? I had some "desktop computer speakers" 20 years ago that sounded surprisingly good.
I think chomecast on a laptop can have the audio directed to the computer speakers instead of the TV. I wonder if the Zoom app on a phone can do the same thing. Then she could mount her phone in front of her for the camera and zoom the video to the TV. Then use bluetooth from the phone for audio.
Stanford's backup QB Ashton Daniels has rushed the ball 24 times this season. Four TDs were scored when he rushed, two being his and two by the other team.
Hard to win if you don't have the ball. #20 UCF loses to Navy 17-14. Navy controlled the ball for 40 of the 60 minutes and completing zero passes (0/1). Also, it helps when you don't turn the ball over and have the fewest penalties in the country.
CU gets smoked by UW 54-7. If it wasn't for a blown coverage 69-yard pass at the end of Q3 - the Buffs would have only had 133 yards, but instead had 202. UW averaged 7.8 yards per pass and 6.5 yards per run. Cal's loss to CU looks worse and worse.
In the second half of his latest game, Jayden De Laura's completed his 306th, 307th (TD #49), 308th, and 309th pass to Wazzu. Except he plays for Arizona now.
I thought Utah might win it when they quickly erased the 17-3 deficit at the start of the second half. Then it was a series of errors throughout the 4th: turnovers, failed 4th downs, drops.
the GIF in which the grinch gets the evil grin at someone else's misfortune. I really thought the game was lost when UCLA went up 14-0 and was very pleased to have been completely wrong.
TCU stays undefeated by kicking a FG as time expired. Frankly, I think Sonny mismanaged the clock by running up the middle on 3rd and 7 with 17 seconds left, making it a lot more dramatic than it needed to be.
I've seen enough clock mismanagement by Dykes and co. at Cal that I thought they were going to botch it. But he said postgame that they practice that last-second field goal scramble every Thursday.
I'm not saying this is the biggest problem in America or anything, but . . . I think there are a lot of young black dudes who really don't understand why this "Black Hebrew Israelite" thing is bad.
The 2022 F1 season ended about as predictably as it could have in Abu Dhabi. Red Bull's Max Verstappen started in pole position and pretty much stayed there for the race's entirety. Outside of a brief stint behind Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, following his pit stop, the dominant Dutchman was barely challenged for his 15th grand prix win of the season. Leclerc raced hard, though, and was able to hold off Verstappen's teammate, Sergio Perez, to secure second place in both the grand prix and the season's drivers championship.
There was some hope that Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton would be able to win the Abu Dhabi grand prix, giving him is first and only win of the 2022 season. However, the seven-time world champion's race and season ended in disappointing fashion, after gearbox failure forced him to retire from the race in the closing laps. That's the first time in 15 seasons that Hamilton has failed to win at least one grand prix.
By "seemingly going to win" you mean both teams continuing their offensive ineptitude into overtime with the game possibly ending in a tie? ;) FG's were tough in that wind too.
MORAGA, Calif. – The Cal (3-1) women's basketball team defeated Saint Mary's (2-2), 69-66, at University Credit Union Pavilion in a game in which it only led for seven minutes. Coming out of a timeout with 1:32 left in the game, Peanut Tuitele got free for a layup off an assist from Karisma Ortiz to give the Bears a 67-66 lead that they would hold on to. A shooting foul on Tuitele on the next possession would give the Gaels a chance to tie the game up at the free throw line but they missed both and Leilani McIntosh answered with two clutch free throws to seal the win. McIntosh led the Bears in scoring with 18 points (on 5-of-7 shooting) and added five rebounds and two steals.
"I thought this was a really gritty, tough win for our team," said Cal head coach Charmin Smith. "It shows our character and resiliency that we can win when we don't play well. Credit to Saint Mary's. They played hard. It's always competitive here, but I'm glad that we were able to figure it out and get the win."
This was an amazing come-from-behind victory. Waiting for your opponents to suddenly start bricking their free throws is not a normal path to victory, but a win is a win.
BERKELEY – California volleyball (7-21, 0-18 Pac-12) welcomed Arizona State (12-18, 6-12) to Haas Pavilion on Sunday afternoon, posting its fifth straight five-set match – a new program record – in a hard-fought battle that included stellar performances from multiple Bears. Sophomore Annalea Maeder recorded a career-high seven blocks and five service aces, also adding 48 assists, 9 digs and 5 kills to her stat line. Freshman Peyton DeJardin posted her first double-double as a Golden Bear, accumulating 16 kills and 17 digs on the day, while classmate Mikayla Hayden totaled 7 blocks of her own and junior Lydia Grote led the team with 22 kills.
LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The No. 1 California men's water polo team held off No. 2 UCLA, defeating the Bruins 7-6 to finish in third place at the 2022 MPSF Championships Sunday at USC's Uytengsu Aquatic Center.
It was a defensive battle as both teams scored their fewest goals of the season. Junior goalkeeper Adrian Weinberg collected eight saves on the day, and the Cal defense combined for five field blocks and eight steals. Junior Warren Loth had two blocks and three steals in addition to a goal.
The Cal men's water polo team will host the 2022 NCAA Championship as the No. 1 seed and advance straight to the semifinals on Dec. 3 at Spieker Aquatics Complex.
The seven-team field was announced Sunday evening, and the defending NCAA champions were placed directly in the semifinals, where they will take on either Pacific or UC Davis. No. 2 UCLA was awarded the other automatic semifinal berth.
BERKELEY – California will go for its first win of the season as it welcomes Texas State into Haas Pavilion for a nonconference contest on Monday night. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. PT on the Pac-12 Network with Roxy Bernstein and Ben Braun on the call.

Holy Diver
Yes! Long live Dio!
Multiple Iron Maiden songs.
Oh yeah there's that Run to the Hills song.
And Rime of the Ancient Mariner.
Boston - Foreplay / Longtime
Although it’s technically a song with 5 parts, but Pink Floyd’s “Shine on You Crazy Diamond,” has a a very long intro.

Bauhaus - Bela Lugosi's Dead (1979). That one's really long, around 3 min I think
The B52s - Planet Claire (1979). Well over 2 min
First one that came to mind was "Fascination Street" by The Cure, but that falls in that 80s 90s window (1989). I think that intro exceeds 2 minutes
Say a Prayer - Duran Duran. Oh, that was 80's. How about Led Zeppelin Stairway to Heaven, Misty Mountain Hop
Anybody have the Rush 2112 album? Many of the songs are purely instrumental. The temples of Syrinx has like a 7 minute intro before the vocals
Hotel California. Just the guitar intro for at least 40-45 seconds.

Carvana
If you’re selling a car, Carvana and CarMax routinely offer less than other sources. Hard pass.

So those seats are sold and the attendance counted but people aren't always sitting in them.
eh, somewhat. Also, some of them don't show, and some of them leave early.
When it's cold and the team is bad the club is packed during the game, yesterday it was pretty empty comparatively

My favorite part was when Stanfurd got the ball back with 54 seconds to go and David Shaw - rather than go for an improbable win - chose to meekly do short yardage passes and angle for the walk-off game-losing/spread-beating field goal.
was at a wedding and thankful for the live text updates.
checked the score occasionally, but the service was terrible in the restaurant.
Assume an ax was involved at some point?
Of course. There was some extra joy in splitting the logs this time

Still have a hard time seeing Stingray from Cobra Kai in serious roles, though he did handle Richard Jewell pretty well.
not sure who that is. Larry? (I'm assuming, based on the similar body type to Jewell)
Yeah Larry.
Fam is out-of-town, so have had bonus TV time.
Had no interest in Spirited (Ferrell, Reynolds on ATV+), but gave it a go on Saturday. Was pretty darn good. Several twists to make it not just a humorous version of A Xmas Carol.
Loving The English. On episode 4. No spoilers please. The male lead is a revelation.
Watched it last week and loved it.

TCU stays undefeated by kicking a FG as time expired. Frankly, I think Sonny mismanaged the clock by running up the middle on 3rd and 7 with 17 seconds left, making it a lot more dramatic than it needed to be.

Wilcox also won the game with an opponent kicking a FG as the time expired.
I've seen enough clock mismanagement by Dykes and co. at Cal that I thought they were going to botch it. But he said postgame that they practice that last-second field goal scramble every Thursday.
It would be weird if Dykes nabs the Natty.
I wouldn't mind it, honestly. I didn't think he was a bad coach, just never a good fit at a west-coast program like Cal.
Agreed, I'm glad to see Dykes doing well. And TCU is a fun team this year, especially with the wacky hypnotoad memes.

F1: Max Verstappen easily wins the final race of the year
https://www.thedrive.com/news/verstappen-wins-2022-abu-dhabi-f1-race-leclerc-claims-2nd-ahead-of-perez
With 26 seconds left, the Jets were seemingly going to win their low-scoring game against the Pats. The Jets punt.

[WBB] Cal Battles For A Tough Win At Saint Mary’s
https://calbears.com/news/2022/11/20/womens-basketball-cal-battles-for-a-tough-win-at-saint-mary-s.aspx
