Great. Wonderful day with family. Wife, daughter, nieces, nephews, significant others, five children one dog. Lots of great food and a warm loving atmosphere. Couldn't have asked for better. How was yours?

Pretty quiet. Just me and one other person. I made Cornish game hens. Also took a walk over to the nearby park and made sure the wild turkeys survived OK. Saw them flying up to roost for the night so all is well.

Very nice. We spent a sizable part with our two sons and their SOs and some of their friends. Food was good, company was good and we had a very nice day and evening.

Niners just dominated the first half. Allowed Seattle to climb back into the game before re-asserting their will.

Worth noting that Seattle scored no offensive TDs, and one of their field goals was thanks to a great kick return. The offense on its own basically only drove for three points. The 49ers defense was dominant all night.

This is yesterday's On this Day which did not appear as there was no DBD.

On this day in 2002 in Memorial Stadium the Golden Bears defeated Stanfurd, 30-7 to snap a seven-game losing streak to their arch rivals. The victory capped a remarkable turnaround for Cal under first-year head coach Jeff Tedford. The Sturdy Golden Ones had finished 2001 with a dismal 1-10 record, their eighth consecutive non-winning season. Beating the Cardinal gave California a 7-5 mark for the ’02 campaign. Joe Igber led the way for the hosts carrying for 226 yards, a Big Game rushing record. "People will forget about me in the next couple of months, but I did what I came here to do,'' Igber said. "We got the win. We got the Axe. That's all that matters.'' Furd took the opening kick off and drove for TD but that was all the scoring they would do as Cal dominated the rest of the game racing to a 23-7 halftime lead, the highlight was a 42-yard touchdown run by Igber. After the game fans tore down the north goal posts and paraded them down Bancroft Way. Said Tedford: "We didn't prepare any differently, but the players were very, very fired up for this game,'' Tedford added. "When you come into the Big Game with 24 seniors, there's really not much to say.’' How about: We’ve got the Axe!

And here is today's very special edition. There will be a final On this Day on Monday.

On this day in 1923 in Memorial Stadium the Golden Bears christened their new home with a 9-0 victory over Stanfurd in the annual Big Game. 73,000 fans (the largest crowd ever for a football game on the West Coast) turned out to see the first-ever game in the new stadium. The Lobsterbacks were worthy opponents having won eight and lost only once — by seven to U$C. California was, as usual in those days, undefeated. The game was a defensive slog with neither team managing to reach 100 yards in offense or get as many as ten first downs. The scoring came via special teams; a blocked punt resulted in a second quarter touchdown, a fourth quarter safety came off a missed field goal. The victory assured California of a fourth consecutive undefeated season and Pacific Coast Conference title. It also marked their fifth straight Big Game win. The first score came after Bill Blewett’s missed field goal was downed by Snookie Mell inside the Furd five The visitors failed to move the ball and had to punt from their own end zone. Babe Horrell sailed through the line to both block and recover the punt in the end zone for the game’s only TD and the first scored in the new stadium. The safety resulted on a missed field goal that a Stanfurdite foolishly tried to run out of the end zone. He was tackled by a host of Bears. The shutout meant that Furd had only scored seven points in the last four Big Games. Their fortunes would change in the off season when they hired Pop Warner as head coach. Meanwhile the Bears had one more unbeaten season to come as part of their Wonder Team years.

Oski Disciple - The On This Date feature has been lots of fun. It appeals to my amateur historian side vis-a-vis Golden Bear football.

Thanks very much for this effort.

Wait, why did Furd down a missed field goal inside their own five? Were the rules different back then? Or was it just Furd incompetence?

Rules were different.

Do we get bonus coverage if we win tomorrow and get a bowl game? Either way, the series of stories has been appreciated and enlightening.

Glad you've liked it. There hasn't been enough games played in December to continue the series.

I don't think any Cal fan forgot what Joe Igber did on this day.

Women’s basketball is 5-0, including a big win at Auburn, but not a peep from W4C?

There’s a home game against SJSU today as part of the Raising the BAR tournament. Is anyone going?
