Wasn't venomous but there is a beetle in Finland with a painful bite. I was barefoot in the grass when one took a chomp out of a toe. It caused excruciating pain which fortunately lasted but a minute or two then all was good.

It’s deja vu all over again as Warriors blow another huge lead

https://www.goldenstateofmind.com/2024/11/25/24306201/deja-vu-all-over-again-golden-state-warriors-blow-another-huge-lead

The Brooklyn Nets were playing on the road on the second half of a back-to-back. Due to injuries, they started first-round bust Ziaire Williams at center, a man who weighs about 200 pounds. Cam Johnson and Cam Thomas both left the game with injuries. Meanwhile, the Golden State Warriors had an 18-point lead midway through the third quarter. Somehow, they lost, 128-120 in what has to be their worst loss of the season.

i sort of turned it off in the 3rd Q when Ws were up 20 to concentrate on some work. figured i'd check in later in the 4th Q. when i checked the score had flipped and the Ws were down 6-8 points pretty solidly the rest of the way

It was ugly. Bench basically blew the lead and let the Nets get confidence and they started making shots.

[FB] Mendoza Named ACC Quarterback Of The Week

https://calbears.com/news/2024/11/25/football-mendoza-named-acc-quarterback-of-the-week.aspx

BERKELEY – California quarterback Fernando Mendoza has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Quarterback of the Week for his performance in Saturday's Big Game win over Stanford, the conference announced on Monday.

Mendoza completed 25-of-36 passes for 299 yards and tied a career-high with three touchdown passes in Cal's 24-21 comeback victory. Mendoza's third touchdown pass of the day turned out to be the game-winner when he connected with Jonathan Brady for a 22-yard score with just 2:40 left in the game to cap a 98-yard drive.

Post game presser he was talking about getting that W in next year's Big Game. His heart is in it and seems like we got the NIL money. Be interesting to see what Ott does, though. This year must have really crushed his draft stock and assuming he plays a fourth year, hard to imagine he'd want to stick around and gamble on a woefully insufficient O-line to get behind. Question is, would another program pay him big NIL money based on how he performed this year? Also, gotta pay Uluave too!

What is also interesting whether you have to decide between Ott and Jet Thomas. It would be nice to have both.

It’s time again for Oski Disciple’s Bear Facts.

California’s only previous football encounter with SMU was on September 21, 1957 in Memorial Stadium. It was the first Golden Bear football game since November 1946 not coached by Pappy Waldorf. It was not an auspicious debut for his replacement, Pete Elliott and it portended the season to come. The Sturdy Golden Ones lost 13-6 en route to a 1-9 season (the lone victory was over U$C). The hosts grabbed a 6-0 first quarter lead but — stop me if you’ve heard this one before — mistakes proved costly. Joe Kapp quarterbacked the Bears and Jack Hart led rushers with 84 yards on 19 carries and scored Cal’s lone touchdown. The Californians drove into SMU territory late in the game but Kapp was intercepted just before the final gun. The Mustang’s first touchdown came after the Bears gambled by going for it on fourth and short on their own 24. Five different players threw passes for California led by Kapp’s seven attempts. The stats were mostly even though the Bears ran many more plays (82-64) but they had twice as many turnovers as their visitors. Not only did California boast a new head coach but they also debuted their new “electronic scoreboard.” Which an Oakland Tribune reporter called a “great improvement” over the old board. SMU had a sophomore quarterback on their squad that day named Don Meredith who went on to be an All-American in ’58 and ‘59, a star for the Dallas Cowboys, an actor and most famously a member of the original ABC Monday Night Football broadcasting crew.

Oski Disciple’s Bear Facts has appeared on the DBD throughout the Cal football season. This series concludes tomorrow. Today’s feature was sponsored by Bagpipe Bob’s Haggis, now in both regular and ranch style.

So blowing an early lead, featuring a conversion failure, a foolish 4th down gamble/failure, and losing the turnover battle aren't new game plan concepts introduced in the Wilcox era?

Expand full comment

Actually the failed 4th down gamble was in the first half. Baffling, especially in those days when coaches were much more conservative.

Thanks for sharing. Relevant on so many fronts. Many have not learned the very dark history of California during the 19th C., including the fact that although California entered the Union as a free state, Southerners were allowed to bring black, enslaved men to California to work the mines (Kentucky Ridge Mine in Nevada County utilized more enslaved labor in CA than any other business/enterprise).
