When my dad was stationed in Okinawa in the seventies, I went to a summer camp on an adjacent island run by the military. One day at the beach, me and my fellow campers pulled out maybe five large WWII bomb shells that we found in the shallow shore. A few of them we learned were still live.
I found about 15 hand grenades when I was cleaning out an abandoned storage unit; called ATF (downtown Oakland) and they were here in under 15 minutes to collect them. They definitely had a Lethal Gun vibe in style and attitude.

PONTIAC, Mich. — A prosecutor in Michigan filed involuntary manslaughter charges Friday against the parents of a boy who is accused of killing four students at Oxford High School, after saying earlier that their actions went “far beyond negligence.”
Jennifer and James Crumbley were charged with four counts of involuntary manslaughter. Under Michigan law, an involuntary manslaughter charge can be pursued if prosecutors believe someone contributed to a situation where harm or death was high. If convicted, they could face up to 15 years in prison.
“The parents were the only individuals in the position to know the access to weapons,” Oakland County prosecutor Karen McDonald said Thursday. The gun “seems to have been just freely available to that individual.”
Good. More gunowners need to take responsibility for the guns they own. Convictions here might give some gunowners pause before they act carelessly or fail to act responsibly.
I don’t understand how a country that supposedly values life, so much so that they will value the life of a fetus over that of a woman’s rights can continue to value the rights of people to own guns at the expense of actual living children and adults who die each year from gun violence.
Surely, if we must protect the rights of an unborn fetus, at the expense of womens right, we should as fiercely defend the life of those fetus’s who have been born and are now children at the expense of peoples rights to own guns.
And it's not just restricting healthcare for the poors. It's restricting anything for the poors. Even though I would imagine a significant portion of their voting base is poor and under educated.
We all know it's not about valuing life. It's not about reason, either. Disabuse yourself of the notion that there's anything reasonable about the positions of (1) valuing a fetus' life over that of a woman's right to choose what happens with her own body and (2) unfettered gun ownership in the face of random and rampant gun violence.
It's about owning the libs, or some variation. Always has been, always will be.
Disagree. Looking back on my life it was never about a logical argument. It was always about, "I know better than you do", which is merely a variant on owning the libs. The only difference is that a couple decades ago it came with a paternalistic attitude. Now that pretense is well nigh gone.
You don't follow what I'm saying at all - in the broad sweep of American history it was not at all like this. I suppose it started in the Love it or Leave it response to anti-war protests, and gained cultural force in the 90's, and now post-internet, it's gone insane, but it didn't used to be like this.
I simply disagree. With time has come the unmasking of certain perspectives. Snot nosed conservatives have always been that way. The language has simply changed, and certain reactionary types are a bit more forthcoming in their sentiments.
I will concede that not all conservatives are snot nosed. Some are merely filled with anxiety, lack imagination, or worried that others are actually enjoying life while they remain incapable of relaxing, slavishly adhering to rules they can't explain or understanding.
A good friend's kids go to and were at Oxford High School in Michigan. They are ok, but are friends with several of the CHILDREN who died and were wounded. Life changing trauma for both the kids and their parents. I think back 31 years ago to the Henry's shooting which was impactful for me, and am furious that as a country we have not taken one positive step towards dealing with the impact of the availability and access to guns (particularly semi-automatic) by the mentally unstable and/or evil. SGBear, I'm sorry this insanity was directly impactful for your family this week too.
Well ****. There was a rumor flying around last night through my kids social media that someone was talking about shooting up the school. So then my phone starts blowing up as the parents' network starts spreading the same rumor. The principal gets involved, the police are notified. The principal releases a statement that there's no evidence to support the rumors and people should stop spreading rumors. So I have the conundrum of whether I keep my kid out of class to have the certainty of falling a day behind during the Junior semester where all of their classes are AP - or risk of the unlikely yet ultimate downside of a shooting . I voted for school.
My kid and their mother decided to skip school.
I just found out 5 minutes ago that the rumors are true. Our neighbor called the police who confirmed they have detained a child, taken screen shots of social media where the suspect shared pictures of guns, and taken statements from witnesses of kids overhearing the suspect saying he was going to shoot up the school. The principal looks like a fool and I have automatically qualified for the worst parent of the year. I just apologized to my kid and my wife for making the wrong choice.
The main thing is that all ended up well - you can't beat yourself up too much for assuming that it was just some teenager blowing off steam. That principal needs a good talking to, though.
It's a nearly daily exercise somewhere. Just got a notification of a nearby school campus that was placed on lockdown this morning for 30 minutes. Someone overheard something a student said and misunderstood (according to the police), and rumors took off, triggering a lockdown. Before notifications could all go out, it was determined there was never any threat, just confusion. It's easy to Monday Morning QB these things after the fact, and after you have more facts; not so much so with little information, especially in an era when you can't predict peoples' actions, much less reactions.
That sucks. I'm sick that this happens all over the country these days.
You can't beat yourself up about this. Lesson learned. Love extra on your kid, give them some hugs and let them know that you wish you had trusted their instincts and will in the future. Make them their favorite dinner and try to mirror whatever level of concern they're exhibiting.
BUT man, that principal. Not OK. Needs to be a community reckoning on that one. I'd start with a very concerned letter to the school board and talk to other parents about their views on what to do.
It's not fair that you and your family were put in such a shitty situation. I hope you aren't too hard on yourself. You didn't make a malicious decision. You just did your best and that's all anyone can ask for.
You mean nearly getting me and my kid killed by a Russian missile? Managing long-tail risk is something that I've had lots of experience with as an investment analyst. Normally, I'm pretty good at it. Was the long tail risk 100x worse than the penalty of skipping school? Yes. I very much made the wrong choice and it's very obvious in retrospect.
No. I mean the advice you gave me about whether or not to attend a Thanksgiving where someone would not be vaccinated. You used a specific analogy that included a grenade, a packed Cal Memorial and a Big Game.
Also, I agree with g.oso. That principal needs to be brought to account for his knee jerk reaction and the potential consequences. In his position, he has a responsibility that goes beyond making off-the-cuff pronouncements regarding a potentially catastrophic situation.
I'm in at an 18% chance....SC still with the talent edge at pretty much every position, enough to win 1-on-1 battles at least, and the Riley hire and his appearance on campus is already giving them a spark.
They watched the UCLA film so they know to pressure the hell out of Garbers, and tho I wish I had faith in Musgrave to come up with something to counter the blitz packages they'll likely see, at the end of the day, I don't. This team has struggled with pressure v UNR, Wazzu & in LA....
I liked our chances a whole lot better before the Riley arrival.
Exactly, Andy....I liked the chances of this game a whole lot after they lost to BYU last Saturday....that Riley hire is a shot in the arm for an otherwise potentially heartless 2021 Trojan club.
I give us even odds. Apparently, Lincoln Riley has been attending practices this week, so it's kind of "real" now that everyone on that roster from top to bottom is auditioning for a job now instead of in the Spring. U$C's defense is the key, IMHO. If they play at the same level that it has, then we should be OK. If not, long night ahead.
They struggle to stop the run, and in a real reversal of tradition for SC- Cal games, often leave acres of space in the secondary for a TE to gallop into. I don't know if I'd put this game as an automatic win for either team, but I think Cal as a 4.5 point favorite is reasonable. This SC team could just easily spot Cal 3 TDs in 10 minutes, you just don't know.
Alrighty, then. I wonder what happened to invoke that kind of reaction. I noticed that the puncher is significantly smaller than the punchee. The puncher must have been over-the-top pissed.
It seems like every major college program with distinct helmet mascot logos is licensed by high schools. Cal's logo was copied by California High Condors (Whittier). Cal Whittier went from Cal script to a copy of the Oregon ducks feather helmets in 2015 to a head of a condor - which looks like a vulture in 2017 and is now back to Cal script over the past two seasons.
Oklahoma coaching search: Mario Cristobal, Josh Heupel, Brent Venables top candidates to replace Lincoln Riley [If Cristobal leaves, is there an Oregon possibility for Wilcox & Co?]
Why do people keep bringing Wilcox up for any Pac 12 opening? No one is hiring him and his losing Pac 12 record and saving us from any buyout we would have to pay if we fire him.
Not after getting housed at UCLA. If this had happened after 2019, Wilcox would probably be in the mix....but 5-10 in his last 15 games with an experienced QB has knocked the bloom off his rose...
Cristobal to Oklahoma makes zero sense....if the Miami job comes free, that's a different story.
[Participation trophy] The Pac-12 tie-in Red Box Bowl was cancelled in September. The NCAA added a replacement bowl so that 6-7 Hawaii can play. They add the "Hawaii Bowl". Guess where that is played? That's right. Texas, naturally. The three bowl eligible teams that are expected to be left out of a bowl are Liberty (7-5), Miami OH (6-6), and Ball State.
All right, now, I don’t want them to gain another yard! You blitz … all … night! If they cross the line of scrimmage, I’m gonna take every last one of you out!
I remember Mike Dunleavy Jr coming to mass at St Mary's Church in Oakland when he was with the Warriors. He would show up at the start of mass and always left before Communion. I wonder if it was because he didn't want to worry about the attention?
John Eastman, the attorney who helped former President Donald Trump pressure then-Vice President Mike Pence to overturn the 2020 election, has asserted his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination, according to a letter he delivered to the Jan. 6 committee explaining his decision not to testify.
“Dr. Eastman hereby asserts his Fifth Amendment right not to be a witness against himself in response to your subpoena,” his attorney, Charles Burnham, wrote in a letter to Chair Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.) dated Dec. 1.
Mark Meadow tries monetize/spin his position by trying to publish a book about 1/6. However, he legally screws himself with the book because it disqualifies him from executive privilege, put him on record for any false information, and sets him up to needing to plead the Fifth - which is essentially an admission of guilt of a crime.
I'm no fan of Aaron Rodgers' conduct, but I don't think he did the same thing Brown did. He mostly stuck to protocol for unvaccinated players in private and did not lie to the team/league. His lie was to the media.
In October, there were 4 unvaccinated NHL players, none of whom could play in Canada due to a national vaccine mandate. Since then, three of them have been vaccinated. Let's check in how the lone hold out is doing.
Awww.... we missed it. Yesterday was Bobby Bonilla Day. Here are some others. I had no idea about Bruce Sutter's deal. I wish I still had his baseball card.
Last year in the early going, Oregon State at least had Cal to beat up on. Not so this time around. It's still possible the Beavers, and a lot of other teams, for that matter, Cal included, put the pieces together late in the year and make a March march; we shall see. Right now, I'm sorry I cut short Christmas light viewing to cover this game.
That '91 game against UW was so amazing. The players entering down the steps of the student section, the close play, and the moment of silence in an enormous stadium when that last pass was not caught. Then, launching from the silence, a standing ovation by the crowd, for a loss that really showed how incredible that team was compared to prior Cal teams of the 1980s. I really blew it later that season by choosing to go down to Santa Barbara for Halloween festivities and watching the USC game from afar (though the awesome "This is the only song you know..." came through loud and clear on TV!).
The loudest game I've ever been to at Memorial. I'm sure there were more fans than the official capacity. It seemed like no one left until well after the game ended. And if I remember the Sugar Bowl reps were there that day and Ken had all the students do a cheer for them either during a TO or after the game.
Easily one of the two best football games I've ever seen live. The other was the 2004 Cal v. U$C game in Los Angeles. I hate it that the two best sporting events that I have ever seen were both Cal losses.
Sugar Bowl reps were there. As I recall, one or two reps came to Band rehearsal that week to say hi.
I was at the SC win in ‘03, but for sheer enjoyment, I’ll throw the Insight Bowl on 12/26/03 into the mix….that was an incredibly fun game to see live.
I was a senior in HS fall of '91 & remember going to that UOP game where they almost hung 90 on the Tigers....yikes.
Was so pumped for that UW game and the place was going nuts after Lindsey Chapman busted up the gut for 70 on the td....if only that final pass had gone to 6'5" Sean Dawkins instead of Treggs....sigh.
The East Bay fire started that day - you could smell the smoke, and the next day, the Oakland Hills were on fire and ash was dropping at Candlestick...crazy times.
I seem to recall we got flagged on that play, so even if he had caught it I think it would have had to come back. But my memory has been shown to be unreliable of late.
I've never been more pumped for a game. I remember driving up Telegraph with my dad several hours before the game and the traffic just being jammed like never before. I had gone to nearly every home game for the prior decade and the atmosphere of that day felt so different in Berkeley. We were part of the national conversation for the first time in my life. And the game was just as competitive and well played as as you could ask for. And yes, I remember spotting that smoke to the southeast.
I was in the band that season, Citrus Bowl trip and all. That was a great game. I remember the game strategy; Pawlaski dinking and dunking to start the game to loosen the defense, then it was like 10 straight rushing plays for Russell. 17-3 at the end of 1Q. Many drinks were had that night.
HSB and I went to the Citrus Bowl. We used his AmEx student ticket deal (something like $89/rt on your side of the Mississippi and $119 on the other side). The closest we could get was Pensacola so we drove all day to get to Orlando. Then we had to drive back a day after. It was an amazing game and we blew out Clemson. Russell White had the only 100 yd rushing game against them all season.
That game was really where the Snyder / Cal relationship more or less dissolved. Snyder got a ton of heat from newly entitled and emboldened Old Blues and the AD office, and I think he was admittedly hurt by the criticism.
I remember seeing tackles out of bounds and cringing because I knew a flag was coming, which it often did. There was extracurricular stuff going on after plays had blown dead, too.
I think justified for the most part. Alot of pent up emotions. Pawlaski had sideline words with a Stanford WR after he caught a ball and ended up OOB on the Cal side. Totally unnecessary.

Heh, reminds me a Seinfeld episode.
Reminds me of a certain Big Bang episode. Some folks will know which one.

Good. More gunowners need to take responsibility for the guns they own. Convictions here might give some gunowners pause before they act carelessly or fail to act responsibly.
1. Increased sentencing for crimes committed with firearms.
2. Strict liability for gun owners and users for damage caused by a gun, whether or not the owner actually used it.
3. Licensing, testing, and registration mandatory for all guns, just as the case with cars.
4. Regulation and tracking on ammunition (not barred by 2A)
5. One strike, you're out. Crime committed using your gun (even if you did not use it), you lose your right to own a gun for life.
Convicted felonies prohibit gun ownership correct? So one thing would be, analogous to what you said in 1, don't let people plead down from a felony.
I'm a bit surprised, even though the parents are clearly partly responsible for this mess.
I don’t understand how a country that supposedly values life, so much so that they will value the life of a fetus over that of a woman’s rights can continue to value the rights of people to own guns at the expense of actual living children and adults who die each year from gun violence.
Surely, if we must protect the rights of an unborn fetus, at the expense of womens right, we should as fiercely defend the life of those fetus’s who have been born and are now children at the expense of peoples rights to own guns.
you missunderstand the 'right to life' movement. it is not about valuing life, it is about restricting health care for the poors.
And it's not just restricting healthcare for the poors. It's restricting anything for the poors. Even though I would imagine a significant portion of their voting base is poor and under educated.
I'm guessing the "logic" is that the zygote/fetus cannot protect itself, but surely these kids and students can and are on their own...
Good guy with a gun... etc...

Yikes!
Chances vs. USC
I would say very low. SC has the athletes to play cover zero and just relentlessly blitz Garbers and the offense into submission.
First to 21 wins this game and SC has the athletes on offense to get to 21 before us.
It's Cal, baseline chances for a win start at 20% and only go down from there.
I don't know about the chances, but my expectations for Cal victory starts at 100% and goes down front there.
so as soon as we walk on the field, that 100 drops to what? 40%?
It actually stays near 100% until half time haha
I'm in at an 18% chance....SC still with the talent edge at pretty much every position, enough to win 1-on-1 battles at least, and the Riley hire and his appearance on campus is already giving them a spark.

It would be nice if we could finally get a win in the Joe Roth uniforms. They look glorious under the lights.

No one wants Wilcox and his 12 point offense
[Participation trophy] The Pac-12 tie-in Red Box Bowl was cancelled in September. The NCAA added a replacement bowl so that 6-7 Hawaii can play. They add the "Hawaii Bowl". Guess where that is played? That's right. Texas, naturally. The three bowl eligible teams that are expected to be left out of a bowl are Liberty (7-5), Miami OH (6-6), and Ball State.

Any policy that disqualifies liberty is a good policy.
No bowl game for them. But they still have this:

I'll take Blitzing Every Play v. Cal for $400
All right, now, I don’t want them to gain another yard! You blitz … all … night! If they cross the line of scrimmage, I’m gonna take every last one of you out!
This is a good hire for WSU and probably doom for Cals offense next season.
I remember Mike Dunleavy Jr coming to mass at St Mary's Church in Oakland when he was with the Warriors. He would show up at the start of mass and always left before Communion. I wonder if it was because he didn't want to worry about the attention?

OUR CRUMBLING DEMOCRACY
i.e. Guilty as sin:

What a Moran
Good.
Anything that puts these a$$holes in legal jeopardy is fine by me. Personally, it's not enough for me. They need to be launched into the sun.

Antonio Brown is suspended for violating Covid protocol. The other star QB wasn't suspended.
I'm no fan of Aaron Rodgers' conduct, but I don't think he did the same thing Brown did. He mostly stuck to protocol for unvaccinated players in private and did not lie to the team/league. His lie was to the media.
He also didn't submit a false vaccine card. Still, I think he should have been more heavily punished.
I see. I actually never really read any details about either of their actions.
The NFL isn't taking it too seriously because Antonio Brown is hurt for at least a couple more weeks I think.

We're #1! We're #1!
Well, we have a at least halfway good team.
let's not jump to conclusions.
All we have to do is get by UCLA and we are golden.
We may not score 50 v UCLA
GO BEARS!!!!!
A little article about the 1991 Football team
https://calbears.com/news/2021/12/1/football-thirty-years-later-a-historic-season-remembered.aspx
I was at the SC win in ‘03, but for sheer enjoyment, I’ll throw the Insight Bowl on 12/26/03 into the mix….that was an incredibly fun game to see live.
no one in the student section sat down that day. there were way too many people and the only way was to find a spot to stand
yeah that's true as well. The student section was packed. If I recall it was packed for just about all the home games.
Umm...I remember the target on the last pass as Mike Caldwell.
The UW game? I thought it was Brian Treggs?
Pretty sure it was Caldwell.
Maybe I'm misremembering, but that's my recollection.
I seem to recall we got flagged on that play, so even if he had caught it I think it would have had to come back. But my memory has been shown to be unreliable of late.
people were chanting "go for 100" in that game
Right. The UOP game. It was amazing. I was in Section TT chanting along with 'em. Altho, I remember it as "We want a hundred! We want a hundred!"
Didn't they run out of Victory Cannon ammo, too?
I've never been more pumped for a game. I remember driving up Telegraph with my dad several hours before the game and the traffic just being jammed like never before. I had gone to nearly every home game for the prior decade and the atmosphere of that day felt so different in Berkeley. We were part of the national conversation for the first time in my life. And the game was just as competitive and well played as as you could ask for. And yes, I remember spotting that smoke to the southeast.
I remember the atmosphere in the stadium as being absolutely electric. It was unlike any game I've seen at Cal Memorial before or since.
I was in the Band that year, too! Wait...who are you?
Tang trumpet player. Hmmm. Say hi to Gerald when you guys get together again. This is Don, percussionist and TH Manager.
Yo, Don! I sure will! It's Coach!
Russell White had the only 100 yd rushing game against them all season.
we booked the tix before we knew if we were going to Citrus Bowl or Sugar Bowl. it would have been a 6-8 hour drive either way.
also, there is an amazing outdoor naval aviation museum in Pensacola that both HAG and i enjoyed
I want to find that tailgate!
Great, great team. Amazing season. I had forgotten that Stanfurd was ranked at Big Game, but it doesn't ease the pain of that loss.
Steve Stenstrom and Tommy Vardell are like the names of the west coast mafia's accountant and strongman. I hate them.
15 penalties for unsportsmanlike conduct/personal fouls at 15 yards each. Fifteen. No other penalties were called on Cal in the whole game. None.
That pisses me off even more.
That game was really where the Snyder / Cal relationship more or less dissolved. Snyder got a ton of heat from newly entitled and emboldened Old Blues and the AD office, and I think he was admittedly hurt by the criticism.
I'm too young to remember this clearly. Were they generally justified penalties? Or overzealous refs?
I remember seeing tackles out of bounds and cringing because I knew a flag was coming, which it often did. There was extracurricular stuff going on after plays had blown dead, too.
I think justified for the most part. Alot of pent up emotions. Pawlaski had sideline words with a Stanford WR after he caught a ball and ended up OOB on the Cal side. Totally unnecessary.
