Bob Lee murder trial: S.F. jury finds Nima Momeni guilty of second-degree murder

https://www.sfchronicle.com/crime/article/nima-momeni-trial-verdict-19959854.php

A San Francisco jury on Tuesday found Bay Area tech consultant Nima Momeni guilty of second-degree murder in the death of CashApp founder and tech mogul Bob Lee last year in a dramatic case whose twists and turns were closely followed nationally for months.

The jury determined that Momeni was guilty when he stabbed Lee, 43, to death on a darkened street beneath the Bay Bridge on April 4, 2023. The verdict was unanimous and was read eight days after deliberations began.

In general, second-degree murder requires prosecutors to prove that a killing was done intentionally, but without premeditation or any other potentially lawful excuse.

This was a murder that Republicans pounced on as evidence of a failed Democrat-run city, with the assertion that Lee had been murdered by an unknown vagrant or tweaker.

The subsequent investigation revealed otherwise.

The Bluetooth SIG is having an event in SF in Sept. At the event we just had, I got some questions about SF being unsafe. I just said don't believe everything you read and see on TV. Yes there are parts that are unsafe. And don't leave things in your car (though just about everyone going to the event won't be driving).

Tunnel

Expand full comment

Berkeley has one vehicle tunnel that I am aware of. The Solano Tunnel connects Solano Avenue with Sutter Street in North Berkeley and runs underneath Marin Avenue, Los Angeles Avenue, and a portion of The Circle. Originally, this tunnel (originally known as Northbrae Tunnel) only carried Key System train traffic but was converted to automobile traffic after the Key System became defunct. The Key System line that ran through the tunnel had a station at Solano Ave and Colusa Ave. The tunnel allowed the line that existed on Henry Street and Sutter Street to link up with the Thousand Oaks station at Solano Ave and Colusa Ave.

The portion of Solano Avenue that is east of The Alameda was originally only used for train traffic, so it had no formal name for the general public. That portion of roadway was renamed Solano Ave. after it was opened to automobile traffic in 1962.

I love that whole tunnel and the circle above it.

I remember taking this tunnel to visit my grandmother who lived on Solano. We would drive from Moraga by campus through the solano tunnel. At the time, I didn't realize Marin went above the tunnel since we didn't take Marin very much.

I didn't really fully make the connection between the tunnel and The Circle until I realized that the stairs to the east of the Tunnel ended at The Circle. Those stairs are called Fountain Walk.

A house, 1998 Marin Ave., also sits over a portion of the tunnel.

I remember when the westbound only bore of the Caldecott had the fire probably 45 years ago. Freaked me out a little bit.

Expand full comment

That was Bore No. 3, which, at the time, was the northernmost bore. The cause of that fire was a collision between a gasoline tanker truck and a passenger vehicle (IIRC) in the early hours of the morning. My memory of the event was that multiple people died in the ensuing inferno that closed down Bore No. 3 for months.

Subsequently, legislation was passed to restrict the transport of hazardous materials on a statewide basis.

My recollection is that the incident happened in '82 or '83. Bore No. 3 was closed for months while the interior was rehabbed. The interior east of the collision site (uphill) got an all-new tile surface.

I remember that there was also a beer truck in the tunnel. It may be the vivid memory of a child, but I remember the tunnel smelling like beer.

There was, indeed, a beer truck in the tunnel. Unfortunately for the driver and the passenger, they were overcome by the smoke and killed.

Always loved this. Maybe my favorite comfort food. Know it as jook.

So few restaurant in the US have it. But every breakfast buffet I went to in China had many varieties.

good stuff. i wish i had it more often as it is not something i make at home.

h-mart has these pretty good frozen packets of them that i like to have for weekend breakfast sometimes.

It's really easy to make. Just add some rice to water and chicken broth. Or just plain water if you want unflavored congee.

good idea. will try it out

You can do it with leftover cooked rice or uncooked rice. Not sure which tastes better. I don't make it very much.

For savory you can put in some chicken broth, and some veges like peas and carrots. If you want protein put in some shredded chicken or chunks of 1000 year egg.

i like it w/ a little bit of scallions or mushrooms or some salty pork like thing that they have in the restaurants.

for the egg, i usually make a fried egg on the side that is still a little running and put it on top.

Raiders-Falcons score: Too many mistakes cloud another high-effort game

https://www.silverandblackpride.com/2024/12/16/24312579/raiders-falcons-recap-week-15-antonio-pierce

It was the final minute of the game and the Las Vegas Raiders’ offense, desperately trying to steal an unlikely win, made another critical penalty.

Their head coach, Antonio Pierce, stared blankly at the field, shaking his head.

We’ve seen this scene before. The Raiders play hard, they try, but they fall short in a sea of mistakes. Their 15-9 home loss to the Atlanta Falcons on Monday night was a microcosm of their season.

Expand full comment

Down 15-3 with about 5 min left, they go on a TD drive. Then on 3rd down, they get the stop, batting down a pass, only to be called for a questionable roughing the passer. Still get the stop due to the Falcons calling some passing plays that fall incomplete. Get the ball back with about 1 min left and get down to the Falcons 30 yard line and the hail mary fails.

Don't want to play? Niners suspend De'Vondre Campbell for the rest of the season, which essentially nullifies his pay for the rest of the season and prevents him from going elsewhere this season.

Savage. I love it! Apparently GM John Lynch heard from the booth that Campbell was refusing to play, went down to the field, asked him about it, and told him to go to the locker room. Don't need that nonsense polluting the sideline.

I mean, if a football player is refusing to play football, then it stands to reason he shouldn't be paid for it.
