Have not yet visited the Andrew Jackson home in Nashville. I suppose there is only one more time I'll be in Nashville next May so maybe I'll go visit it. Wonder if it is worth it.

When I went to Russia in October 2010, I was wandering around the Hermitage Museum, and got thirsty and hungry, and wandered downstairs to the snack bar. Where I ran into a woman who I worked in the same building as in Shanghai. And she is also a Cal classmate too (although we didn't know each other at Cal).

I bought a coke and tasteless sandwich. And said "hey see you back in Shanghai" - I think i've seen her under 4 times in the last decade though.

Day 2: EDSBS Charity Bowl

Saw Scottie, golden oso, and NorCalNicks donations on twitter yesterday. We were in sixth place after 1 day - and my and Nick's donations were after that so let's stay in the top ten.

6. Cal

Next closest Pac12 school is Oregon at #13

Expand full comment

Penn State has announced its presence and has vaulted into 3rd place. Cal is now 7th and about 1800$ behind 6th place Florida

Expand full comment

Apparently a single Penn State alum donated $9899 which explains the leap to 3rd place.

I have mixed feelings about this "competition" - I always give something, but it came out of the old EDSBS and the commenters were for the most part dicks to anyone from SC. I was there long enough that I only caught shit from a few SEC dicks and one Notre Dame guy in particular, but it's one of the reasons why SC never places in that annual fundraising.

Expand full comment

I should add that of the limited number of SC folks who dropped in, there were few whom I was sorry to see leave, but that's a separate issue.

if you draw a line across the state from say Big Sur to Visalia, sure! But in the context of yesterday's DBD discussion about seriously northern California, not really, no.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration said Tuesday they are recommending a "pause" in the use of the single-dose Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine out of an "abundance of caution" while an investigation is conducted into reports of apparently rare, potentially dangerous blood clots.

In a joint statement on Tuesday, the two agencies said they are "reviewing data involving six reported U.S. cases of a rare and severe type of blood clot in individuals after receiving the J&J vaccine."

"In these cases, a type of blood clot called cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) was seen in combination with low levels of blood platelets (thrombocytopenia)," said Dr. Anne Schuchat, principal deputy director of the CDC and Dr. Peter Marks, director of the Food and Drug Administration's Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research. "All six cases occurred among women between the ages of 18 and 48, and symptoms occurred 6 to 13 days after vaccination."

Expand full comment

well...i'm not a woman between the ages of 18 and 48, and it's been nearly 13 full days after the J&J shot. Seemingly no blood clots here.

I don't think the bottom 40% of Americans can differentiate between a "pause" and "unsafe". I think this will affect the decisions of the 23% who are unsure they want any vaccine, leading to a net loss of people and a higher risk of an eventual evolution of a variant that mutates beyond existing vaccines.

Expand full comment

Yeah, given the numbers we're seeing on the blood clotting issue (6 cases out of 6 million people who have had the JnJ vaccine?) I think they should have erred on the side of keeping the vaccinations going, because it seems to me the risk from COVID is still much greater, both on an individual level and for the broader public.

I will grant that I am not an infectious disease expert and do not have access to all the same information the FDA or CDC do. But based on what is publicly known I think this is a mistake.

Expand full comment

it's a lose lose situation - if the FDA does nothing, they look like they're pushing vaccination come what may. But this, on the other hand, almost certainly creates uncertainties that could be counterproductive.

Let's be realistic though: a lot of people are going to refuse any vaccine whatever the reason.

Expand full comment

I mean . . . you can release information about possible side effects and what to do about them without recommending a pause in vaccinations.

Expand full comment

It's a lose, lose situation in terms of a publicity standpoint. It is a win in terms of long-term public policy.

Just sticking to schools I've visited and not including Cal - I think Oregon's should be higher, TCU's was kind of dull, Arizona seems accurate, USC's is too high (I don't really see much of a difference between Cal/UCLA/USC to be honest - urban campuses that are slightly too small for their space with both good and awful buildings)

Giants do almost literally nothing on offense, lose 3-0

https://www.mccoveychronicles.com/2021/4/12/22381269/san-francisco-giants-reds-recap-jesse-winker-aaron-sanchez

Itā€™s the time of the season when itā€™s common to turn on the TV and realize that both baseball and basketball are on. It created quite a conundrum in days of lesser technology, when networks had but one measly station to work with (can you imagine? how did people survive?).

Now every major network has a secondary and tertiary station, or an app for extra content, or both.

On Monday night, for example, the San Francisco Giants were relegated to NBC Sports Bay Area+ which, despite that misleading ā€œ+ā€ in the name, is not actually a better version of NBC Sports Bay Area. The ratings-favoring Golden State Warriors were on the primary NBC Sports Bay Area station, forcing you to find where the silly little extra station was in order to watch the Giants game.

I hope you failed. I hope you failed miserably.

Game #11: Aā€™s set season-high in scoring for third straight game in win over Dā€™Backs

https://www.athleticsnation.com/2021/4/12/22381303/oakland-as-game-11-arizona-dbacks-score-result

For the first time this season, the Oakland Aā€™s played a game against a team other than the Astros or Dodgers. And for the third straight game, they set a season-high in scoring.

The Aā€™s won their road series opener against the Arizona Diamondbacks, by a comfortable 9-5 margin. After totaling just 19 runs in their first eight games of the year, Oakland has now scored six, seven, and nine over their most recent contests.
