The Great Wave off Kanagawa (Japanese: 神奈川沖浪裏, Hepburn: Kanagawa-oki Nami Ura, lit. "Under the Wave off Kanagawa"), also known as The Great Wave or simply The Wave, is a woodblock print by the Japanese ukiyo-e artist Hokusai. It was published sometime between 1829 and 1833 in the late Edo period as the first print in Hokusai's series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji. The image depicts an enormous wave threatening three boats off the coast in the Sagami Bay (Kanagawa Prefecture) while Mount Fuji rises in the background. Sometimes assumed to be a tsunami, the wave is more likely to be a large rogue wave. It is Hokusai's most famous work and is often considered the most recognizable work of Japanese art in the world.

Watched the first episode of The Might Ducks: Game Changers. It's about a kid that gets kicked off the Ducks team because he isn't good enough that has now grown into a full on program. His mom (Lauren Graham - Lorelei Gilmore) starts her own team because playing hockey is more about having fun. She's looking for an ice rink to play in, is walking downtown, and sees a sign for something called the Ice Palace. Walks in and sees Gordon Bombay who is running the place. She has to coach because he doesn't want anything to do with hockey.
I somehow had missed the Pallbearer album "Forgotten Days" when it came out last year - discovered that last night, and had a listen. Surprisingly jaunty! 16/19 would listen again.
I have "New Long Leg" by Dry Cleaning and "Collapsed in Sunbeams" by Arlo Park in the queue for something new to listen to.
also, a few years ago in Boston, there was a really great Great Wave exhibit. it was called something like "24 views of Fuji" and there was the Great Wave of course, but lots of other angles and views.
the most surprising thing to me was that that prints are small. at most a 8x10 size.
"A new decision from the U.S. Senate's nonpartisan parliamentarian means Democrats could advance more of President Biden's agenda without the support of Republicans.
The official's interpretation of Senate budget rules would allow the use of the reconciliation process more than once in a fiscal year, and it is viewed by Democrats as a possible strategy for moving top policy priorities with a simple majority, since getting the needed 10 Republican votes in a 50-50 Senate has proved difficult.
Details are still unclear as to how Democratic leaders might use the additional chance to pass budget-related policies."
Things are unclear online, haven't had a chance to ask doctor yet, but there are smart people here...after getting vaccine, should one get an antibody test? How does one know that one is "covered"?
This article says no to the test, but it's not super clear to me (and, of course, the comments don't really clear it up):
Got my second Pfizer shot yesterday and I definitely felt it last night. I generally sleep pretty well but I woke up in the middle of the night with chills, possibly a slight fever. Things are back to normal this morning now, other than some muscle aches.
Covid variants are supplanting the original virus, spreading to become the dominant local form. Epicenters like MI, CA, and NY are seeing different impacts. For example, Michigan is dominated by B.1.1.7, which is sending 50 to 60 year-olds because it is about 50% more contagious than the base virus and they reopened schools there.
I am getting my second Pfizer shot tomorrow morning. Thus, whoever is up first should post topics for the DBD. I'll try to tend to the DBD on Thursday and Friday. FYI: I will be in Florida next week on a secluded gulf coast beach, so whoever is up first... post whatever.
Feeling OK after the shot, though I was a bit worried during the first fifteen minutes that there might be after effects, but none so far except I feel a bit hotter than normal.
Here in Maryland, Governor Hogan announced late yesterday that mass vaccination sites would start taking _anyone_ 16 and over starting today, and that everywhere else would start taking them soon. That's 3 weeks earlier than they were going to open the floodgates. In the spirit of YOLO, I've already got an appointment sorted for our 16 year old for tomorrow - out in Trump country on the eastern shore. Lots of capacity and no takers, it turns out.
I couldn't believe it tbh. I know that folks from DC are starting to take advantage of not too many questions being asked of "walkups," but I really didn't think that there would be same and next day slots available right after Hogan opened the doors as wide as possible.
Probably this just reflects my willingness to pursue things that are inconvenient and the luxury of being able to declare that I'm taking the morning off work. Not everyone is fortunate enough to do the latter.
Wazzu gets Wisconsin's Nakia Watson (RB - So) from the portal. Watson is more of a north-south brawler to compliment WSU's lighter RBs Borghi and McIntosh. And hopefully, it gets personal when Wisconsin & WSU play each other in '22 and '23.
UCLA didn't get the W against Gonzaga, but the Bruins effectively beat them, wearing them down too much for the Bulldogs to be ready to deal with another bunch of Bears who happened to be really good so soon.
Yes, my pet theory is that Gonzaga was forced to play two mighty Pac-12 teams in a row, while Baylor didn't have to play any. Therefore the Zags were too worn down.
In non-conference play, Gonzaga played Kansas, Auburn, West Virginia, Iowa, and Virginia. Obviously they won all these games. Within the WCC only BYU was truly relevant, but they did beat them three times.
The Zags were entirely deserving of their ranking going into the tournament.
its an interesting trade. And while Darnold's number will be $18.8M in '22, Bridgewater is something like $21-23M so Bridgewater is done after this coming season regardless.
The normally subdued Angels fanbase was pretty spicy last night (a bunch of Dodgers fans in attendance no doubt helped). They were relentlessly booing the Astros' big names, chanting "Cheaters," and heckling them all night. And later on in the game fans started finding trash cans around the stadium to bring to the front rows to taunt Houston players.
Dusty standing up for his players, but he's wrong. The Assterisks did not pay.
"How many in the stands have never done anything wrong in their life? We paid the price for it. How many people have not cheated on a test or whatever at some point in time. I mean it's easy if you live in glass houses, but I don't think anybody lives in glass houses.
"I think that sometimes we need to look at ourselves before you spew hate on somebody else. It's a sad situation for America, to me, when you hear things -- I mean what are the kids supposed to think in the stands? And some of them are kids that are following their parents. It's sad to me. People make mistakes. We paid for ours, and I wish they'd leave it alone."
The closest I've gotten to "cheating" on a test is when a mathematics professor at Cal gave me extra help before the final exam because I was the only student to consistently go to office hours.
A little different story, but reminded me of one time I got in trouble in HS for taking notes when the health teacher was explaining what is going to be on the test. She called me out for "not paying attention" and doing something else when she was doing a favor by telling us what's going to be on the test. All I was doing was writing down everything that she said. Granted, no one else was taking notes, but that's not my fault. I aced that test. Just because they don't know how to do the right thing, don't assume that other people like that too.
The sad thing for America is the light wrist slap of the Astros by MLB. I never cheated on a test so implying that everybody does it is ridiculous. If complaining about the Astros' cheating is "spewing hate" than I'm not sure what planet Dusty is living on.
Despite having played fewer games than most teams, the San Francisco Giants are tied for the MLB lead with nine home runs.
Of those nine, eight have been of the solo variety.
The Giants are doing the most, but they’re also doing the bare minimum. They’re reliant on the most valuable play in baseball, but they refuse to maximize it. They have eight one-run home runs, one two-run home run, and zero three, four, five, or six-run home runs.
The Oakland A’s played their fifth game of the 2021 season on Monday, and for the fifth time they got torn apart. They didn’t just lose to the Los Angeles Dodgers, they got trounced in every area in a 10-3 game that was over by the 3rd inning.
On the mound, Frankie Montas made his season debut, and he didn’t get out of the 3rd inning. On top of lots of hard contact and free passes and general wildness, the defense behind him didn’t help either. In the 2nd inning he might have escaped with only one run in, but third baseman Matt Chapman botched a fairly routine (for him) grounder with two outs, extending the inning long enough to allow the next batter to drill a three-run double.
Entering spring training, Dustin May wasn’t expected to crack the starting rotation. After a fantastic spring, he earned the final fifth spot. On Monday he made his season debut, giving the Dodgers a fantastic start as they won their fourth straight game, defeating the Athletics, 9-3.
May threw six scoreless innings on Monday, issuing only two hits. He had eight strikeouts, tying his career-high. Earlier in the day, I talked about how if May will be able to get his strikeout numbers up he can become a more dominant pitcher and take his game to the next level. With eight strikeouts in six innings, I think that will work.
Whoever posted those Son-'O-God comics - they're a blast.
you're welcome!
What's your go-to meal when you don't want take-out but don't want to work hard at cooking?
Packaged instant ramen, add two slices of fried spam, and poach an egg in there. Sometimes I'll add a slice of cheese too.
Leftovers. Pasta Alfredo. Sausage or steak sandwiches.
sweet italian sausages, peppers, tomato sauce with pasta.
i can get this prepped in 15 min and let it simmer for a couple hours for a simple weeknight dinner. but even without simmering it is perfectly fine
it is also our go-to ski cabin meal because everything is readily available almost anywhere.
Chicken schnitzel.
Chicken fajitas. Only takes 5 minutes of prep work
Unless you decide to fire roast bell peppers in which you gotta wait for the peppers to steam themselves and cool down.
Cheesy scrambled eggs
We have a basement freezer with a bunch of frozen Trader Joes meals (various pastas, Asian dishes, etc.) that work in a pinch.
This is my answer as well. Some kind of frozen Trader Joe's meal.
something frozen like dumplings or cereal. Or sliced Molinari and Sons salami and cheese with crackers.
Heh, I'll answer for my wife - some sort of pasta.
IF I have cheese? WTF?
