"President Donald Trump is losing a critical constituency: voters who see two choices on the ballot — and hate them both.
Unlike in 2016, when a large group of voters who disliked both Trump and Hillary Clinton broke sharply for Trump, the opposite is happening now, according to public polling and private surveys conducted by Republicans and Democrats alike.
It's a significant and often underappreciated group of voters. Of the nearly 20 percent of voters who disliked both Clinton and Trump in 2016, Trump outperformed Clinton by about 17 percentage points, according to exit polls.
Four years later, that same group — including a mix of Bernie Sanders supporters, other Democrats, disaffected Republicans and independents — strongly prefers Biden, the polling shows. The former vice president leads Trump by more than 40 percentage points among that group, which accounts for nearly a quarter of registered voters, according to a Monmouth University poll last week."
BERKELEY – A record 10 Cal intercollegiate athletic programs – all with scores of 1,000 in their latest multiyear Academic Progress Rate scores – have earned NCAA Public Recognition Awards for their exceptional results in the classroom.
Those receiving the honor are beach volleyball, men's and women's cross country, women's golf, lacrosse, women's soccer, softball, men's and women's tennis and volleyball. The 10-team breaks the school mark of seven from both 2017 and 2019. The total also makes Cal one of just six schools from Power 5 Conferences to reach double figures.
Cal's men's tennis team is receiving the national notice for the 10th year in a row, the longest streak among Golden Bear programs. Volleyball is being honored for the fifth straight year, with women's golf and lacrosse posting a run of four consecutive years. Women's tennis has also achieved the recognition in eight of the last nine years, while women's cross country and softball both earned the award for the first time.
Overall, 15 different teams have earned the public honor a total of 55 times since the NCAA began identifying distinguished sports teams in 2004-05, more than 50 percent of which have come in the past four cycles (29 of 55).
The wheels are one of the few components I haven't swapped on my 11-year-old bike (along with the frame, seat, and bars). I swapped out the forks, drivetrain (went from 3x8 to 1x11), and brakes this winter and it feels like a completely different bike now. It's wonderful.
@cmclymer: Random question for folks: I wasn't even born yet, obviously, but I'm curious who remembers watching the M*A*S*H series finale live and what it was like to watch something that 60% of U.S. households were watching simultaneously that wasn't the Super Bowl.
We had a Wednesday night 90210/Melrose Place watching group on my dorm floor (someone had a huge 32" television in their room) - I only watched 90210. It was about 10 people crowded into a Unit 3 double.
When Dylan didn't get into UC Berkeley, we broke out into huge cheers.
Sophomore year I used to watch Days of our Lives in the dorm lounge where some of my friends lived - initially because of a very pretty young lady and then latterly because we’d all got absorbed into the various plot lines
Whole family watched it. I was about 12. I remember being excited that it was long (1 hr maybe more?) and then disappointed that it did not live up to my lofty expectations. I was watching 1-2 rerun eps per day at that age.
Completely normal person who wore a KKK hood to a grocery store, apologized through a police statement citing that it was not meant to be a racial statement.
There used to a Christmas See’s stand in the local mall but to be honest it’s been so long since I’ve set foot in a mall at that time of year, I’m not sure if they have given up.
There used to be See's kiosks with pre-packed boxes at SFO, but now there's a full blown store where you can get whatever you like. If they had had that when I lived abroad I would have hit it up every time I left.
I remember a kiosk at Oakland airport but I haven't flown through there in years. Not very many flights through there even though it's the most convenient for me.
yes and no. regional brands are available all over.
on the other hand, every city in the US has a perfectly good micro-brew scene. i almost never drink i a beer that i have heard of if i am anywhere outside my local area.
I had no idea. I loved their chocolate milk, but I will say that my consumption of milk in general has shifted to mostly Clover and occasionally Strauss over the years. It looks like Producers bought the brand, which I'm OK with because I love Producers products though they are not very prevalent in the Bay Area (I see them a lot in Tahoe).
About half a year before finishing grad school, I started noticing bright red hairs. I noticed my first grey hair after I moved to Taiwan, so probably after I turned 30?
I got my first gray hair while at Cal. I had a handful of grays by the time I left. I got a bunch more in grad school, but the graying seems to have slowed down since.
Most of Virginia to start Phase 1 of re-opening this Friday but northern Virginia to hold off until the end of the month. But I saw a turkey running through the park across the street this morning so there's that. First turkey I've ever seen in the neighborhood.
@mzinshteyn: BREAKING: @calstate's leader Tim White says that the 23-campus system will be largely virtual in Fall 2020. Some exceptions will be made for hands-on courses, but he cites analysis of forthcoming waves of covid-19 infection that makes in-person learning too dangerous.
One side effect of more hand-washing and regular sanitizing when I go out: my hands are dryyyy. I picked up some moisturizing hand soap a couple weeks ago and that has helped considerably, but it was rough for a while.
Yeah, one weird physical thing I started experiencing in my 20s was that my hands would always get dry and cracked in the winter, so I've been using Aquaphor lotion ever since. Just once per day seems to hold off the problems.
My position regarding hand lotion- specifically that I know I need it when my knuckles start to crack - is viewed as unacceptable by the ladies of the house. Mind you they feel the same way about my face care regime.
I had two recent reminders how much a difference moisturizing can make.
1) I was moisturizing my hands before bed (sometimes Cetaphil, sometimes Kiehl's hand cream, which is thicker, but both worked), and during the day, would marvel at how soft my hands were!
2) For about a week (maybe more), I wasn't using my face moisturizer or my eye cream. Then, I noticed fine wrinkles at the inner corners (closer to my nose) of my eyes! Once I started using eye cream again, those wrinkles went away.
A few years ago I asked a dermatologist about using botox to get rid of my crow's feet, which a friend had done. After a very close look at my face, she said "you don't have crow's feet, you just need to moisturize." And sure enough, a better moisturizer did wonders.
I don't believe that is or was a requirement for anyone who was already in the system. The actual distribution of government (and not just federal) and other dollars has been a lot slower and inconsistent than most would have hoped, no doubt because its a big job no one was staffed or geared up to do it on a mass scale, but also because there isn't near the drive to actually hand out $s as there was to harvest the political benefits of announcing you are going to hand out or refund money.
I remain puzzled only because I’m pretty sure they have our bank information from payments; but we tend to carry refunds over to the next tax year. Mind you the bank information isn’t changed since like 1997 so...

cycling folks .. i know there are a few around.
i bought some new wheels for my bike. first time i have ever seriously upgraded my road bike.
not expecting to go a ton faster or win anything, but i figure i ride enough that it is "worth it"
found some small company in SC that makes good stuff and good prices.
https://boydcycling.com/
I ride ENVE wheels - I bought them used. The Fulcrum Racing 7's that came with my bike were pretty crap - but now I'm afraid to ride in huge rain.
The wheels are one of the few components I haven't swapped on my 11-year-old bike (along with the frame, seat, and bars). I swapped out the forks, drivetrain (went from 3x8 to 1x11), and brakes this winter and it feels like a completely different bike now. It's wonderful.

I watched it only being very marginally familiar with M*A*S*H
watched it in the Griffiths hall lounge. at the time, it wasn't unusual for lots of people to watch the same thing together. there was no VCR.
Some people on my floor would watch Grey's Anatomy together (though I don't think I ever watched with them)
We had a Wednesday night 90210/Melrose Place watching group on my dorm floor (someone had a huge 32" television in their room) - I only watched 90210. It was about 10 people crowded into a Unit 3 double.
When Dylan didn't get into UC Berkeley, we broke out into huge cheers.
I remember bunches of people watching All My Children and other soaps around lunch time in the student union. Not admitting I did it or not.
The only thing I watched at Ridge Project was Monty Python in the TV room.
Sophomore year I used to watch Days of our Lives in the dorm lounge where some of my friends lived - initially because of a very pretty young lady and then latterly because we’d all got absorbed into the various plot lines
I remember watching Die Hard downstairs in Norton on the big screen.
Watched it with my housemates on a tiny BW tv. Some of them cried.
I remember watching the M*A*S*H series finale live. It was a really good finale.
I remember it well. I thought at the time it was a bit too saccharine which was not the tone of the show overall
Agreed, but I barely remember it. Odd thing about the show: set in Korea, but really about Vietnam.
That's actually a smart thing about the show, I feel.
Yeah, it allowed them scope to say things without making it too topical. It was a very popular show.
Whole family watched it. I was about 12. I remember being excited that it was long (1 hr maybe more?) and then disappointed that it did not live up to my lofty expectations. I was watching 1-2 rerun eps per day at that age.

Oh yeah, that's right gif
Besides It's-It's, name a regional food product
Tommy's Burgers.
See's Candies. it is the only must-not-forget item to bring back from trip to Bay Area.
I did not realize See's was regional (or used to be). I hadn't realized that I haven't seen one since I lived in CA.
I end up back in Asia with two cans of Toffee-ettes when I have room.
(but now there is/was a See's in Hong Kong)
I remember a kiosk at Oakland airport but I haven't flown through there in years. Not very many flights through there even though it's the most convenient for me.
Tons of Southwest fights, very few non-stop to the East Coast.
I have been known to grab a box or two when leaving LAX, but I can’t imagine when I’ll next be in California so...
See's isn't as regional as it used to be. I think I saw a See's shop in Louisville.
there is supposedly a shoppe here in NYC as well but i havent been to it yet.
i usually like waiting in line and making a custom box w/ just the things that i like
You can do that?!?!?!
Oh heck yeah. Give me my pound of nothing but Scotchmallows, molasses chips and caramel patties please.
Yes, I'll buy a dozen boxes please.
that's the best part. you even get a free sample or two while you make up your mind.
I remember waiting in line at the Krispy Kreme in Hayward-ish, just off 880, and they would give you a free donut while waiting in line.
Tri tip.
I think beer used to be much more regional than it is now.
yes and no. regional brands are available all over.
on the other hand, every city in the US has a perfectly good micro-brew scene. i almost never drink i a beer that i have heard of if i am anywhere outside my local area.
Yep. I always try to drink local beers whenever I'm traveling.
I try to sample the local brew if possible
Nice euphemism
Me too! o/
Old Bay seasoning in Maryland
Dad’s root beer
That's a good one. Also, ALE8.
Where is that from?
Midwest I guess. We had them in Louisville. Looks like it's bottled in Kentucky. It's a ginger ale that very gingery. Almost like the artisan ones.
Verner’s ginger ale appears to be mostly midwestern
Thrifty's Ice Cream - Double Chocolate Malted Crunch FTW.
Berkeley Farms, RIP

Aw, I didn't realize they were going under. Moo :(
Utz potato chips
Herr's potato chips
I had no idea there were so many chip producers in the Mid-Atlantic.
Route 11 potato chips are good
Granny Goose chips
Utz was the first thing that popped into my head.

gray hair EVERYWHERE
About half a year before finishing grad school, I started noticing bright red hairs. I noticed my first grey hair after I moved to Taiwan, so probably after I turned 30?
I've had them individually for a long time - but only one or two at a time through my mid-30s. They're now coming too fast to pluck.
And less hair on top.
same here, but I am taking it as a positive in this time of coronavirus without access to haircuts
Looking for the best deals on minoxidil.
Gray NOSE hair.
Those are the most annoying.

HSB and I had a friend that got quite a few gray hairs when he started at Cal. After graduation they just about all went away.

was looking into seeing if the 16 yr old qualifies, but i guess she is a dependent
https://www.irs.gov/coronavirus/non-filers-enter-payment-info-here
Who is eligible for the Economic Impact Payment?
U.S. citizens, permanent residents and qualifying resident aliens who:
- Have a valid Social Security number,
- Could not be claimed as a dependent of another taxpayer, and
= Had adjusted gross income under certain limits.
You should get an extra $500 for her.

I have yet to see any trumpbux, but I don’t think we’ve filed our 2019 taxes and that’s a precondition? I dunno
we got stimulated at the end of april. straight into savings.
Not what you're supposed to do! Spend that!
Did the politicians really think the majority of the people would spend it?
My friend bought a giant slip and slide
Nah, my mom hasn't filed taxes in 5 years (that's a whole different story) but got her bucks.
Maybe they looked at how this county votes then and put on the brakes
*but that would be corrupt and immoral*
“Let’s do it!”
I got mine and I haven't filed 2019. 2018 is the last I filed.
