So are you saying that they are prepared to Fire Starkey?

Shut up Trojan, I'm trying to be crafty here...

Wouldn't be the first time a questionable endorsement deal was the catalyst for long overdue change where actual relevant factors weren't.

MS may have enough votes to change the state flag, which features the Confederate flag in the corner. Also TIL that the current flag wasn't adopted until 30 years after the Civil War. Prior to that, it was this:

I can see why they changed their minds about the fried egg tree flag.

why do you think they call it the Egg Bowl? re: Miss-Miss St

Maybe they can update the state motto: "Can we offer you a fried egg in these trying times?"

I thought about adding some to the bird feeder after a squirrel learned how to scale the shepherd's hook, climb onto the feeder, and knock it all on the ground (birds can't taste it and squirrels don't like spicy). Instead I put some crisco on the hook to stop it from climbing. Watching that thing struggling and sliding down the pole this morning was *chef's kiss*

heyalumnigo's avatar

Somewhere I saw a video of a guy that created a squirrel obstacle course to get the food at the end. Let me see if I can find it.

heyalumnigo's avatar

sorry...I guess it was a squirrel proof bird feeder.

I was pretty sure that capybaras are eaten by some people. During my quick Google search to confirm this fact, I learned that capybaras also eat their own poop (high in protein and have useful microbes for digestions). The latter fact makes me question my openness to partake in the former.

Wiata78's avatar

Lots of rodents eat their poop.

Wiata78's avatar

What I recall from zoology class is that they don’t eat all their poop. Just the very special nuggets that come from a rather large appendix, way larger than humans have.

Capicola with cheese sandwich is supposedly the most popular choice (according to their menu) at the Primanti Brothers restaurants, more famous for putting fries inside the sandwich, that originated in Pittsburgh

The University of Oregon and Oregon State, is a joint statement released by both University Presidents and ADs, have announced today that competitions between the 2 will no longer be referred to or promoted using the term "Civil War", a term that has been in universal use for the rivalry since the 1930s. Initial reaction has been tilting to the uncivil.

heyalumnigo's avatar

I'm sure the Oregon rednecks are up in arms.

Ruey Yen's avatar

I always thought that it was the fact that Oregon was NOT involved with the American Civil War that made it "okay" for them to use that moniker for that rivalry.

GoldenSD81's avatar

I agree. They should change it the Hatfields/McCoy Feud and Rivalry game.

Peetyjay's avatar

I think I need the official explanation on this one. Seems a stretch too far, even for someone like me who supports removing monuments to the symbols of the confederacy.

AndyPanda's avatar

Here is the full statement by President Ed Ray:

Members of OSU community,

I am writing to share that Oregon State University and the University of Oregon have agreed that effective immediately the term “Civil War” will no longer be used to promote any athletic competition between the universities.

As you likely know, “Civil War” has been used for football and basketball games — and other sports competition — between OSU and UO since the phrase was first referenced in the 1930’s.

Changing this name is overdue as it represents a connection to a war fought to perpetuate slavery. While not intended as reference to the actual Civil War, OSU sports competition should not provide any misconstrued reference to this divisive episode in American history.

In recent years, some students, faculty, alumni, student-athletes, OSU stakeholders and community members have questioned the appropriateness of this term. That we did not act before to change the name was a mistake. We do so now, along with other important actions to advance equal opportunity and justice for all and in recognition that Black Lives Matter.

President-elect King Alexander and I are in full agreement with this decision. So is UO President Mike Schill, OSU Vice President and Director of Athletics Scott Barnes, and UO Athletics Director Rob Mullens, as well as numerous current and past student-athletes from both universities.

In the months ahead, OSU and the University of Oregon will engage collaboratively to involve their respective students, faculty, staff, student-athletes, alumni, donors, community partners and athletics sponsors to consider other, more appropriate names, if any, to call the athletics rivalry between our two great universities.

I encourage your support and engagement in this naming transition, as we work to identify other areas where our references, practices and norms do not represent our values of diversity and inclusivity.

Sincerely,

Edward J. Ray

President

"Changing this name is overdue as it represents a connection to a war fought to perpetuate slavery."

It was also a war fought to end slavery as well.

sycasey's avatar

Yeah, I mean:

1. The American Civil War is not the only "civil war" in history. A civil war is just a war fought within your nation's own borders, so it's a perfectly fine name for an intrastate rivalry game.

2. None of the iconography or pageantry around this game had anything to do with the Confederacy.

I don't get it.

GoldenSD81's avatar

I agree with this. When I think of the Oregon/OSU civil war I don’t even associate it with the American Civil War, I just think of it as a generic intrastate civil war.

Peetyjay's avatar

Suggested name change: the Oregon Insurgency. Though I am not sure who the insurgents would be considered. Which University was established second?

After getting blown out in the 2018 elections due to the focus on healthcare, the Trump administration takes another tilt at the windmill just in time for the 2020 election.

sycasey's avatar

I just don't want to read any more articles speculating that maybe Trump's political instincts are much smarter than anyone realizes. No they're not.

Peetyjay's avatar

He's a one trick pony, though he happens to do that one trick very well, which is firing up his base.

GoldenSD81's avatar

He is a one trick phony and it took the combined forces and power of Russian interference, sexism, xenophobia, racism, Fox News, right wing internet trolls, InCels, EMAILS!, Wikileaks, and decades of built up Clinton hate and conspiracy theories to get him elected.

If Biden runs in 16 he more than likely wins on just the strength of being a white man and not Hillary Clinton.

Cugel's avatar

Well, he first would have had to win the primary.

GoldenSD81's avatar

If Obama endorses Biden in 16 then I don’t think Clinton even runs in the primary. Bernie still runs and probably loses in the primary early like he did this year.

I just don’t think people realize how much of a polarizing and hated figure Hillary was and still is on both the left and right.

Plus, misogyny and sexism is still strong within segments of the Democratic Party and it’s voters.

sycasey's avatar

Based on how he did this year, I would bet on Biden winning the primary in '16 as well.

sycasey's avatar

Yeah, I think he has one set of instincts that he follows no matter what, which are largely related to gaining more adulation and/or money for himself. Sometimes that's good in politics, sometimes not.

Cugel's avatar

eh, I'm gonna have to disagree somewhat.

I think Joe S is trying to troll at a very high level.

https://www.huffpost.com/entry/donald-trump-quit-morning-joe_n_5ef60ec8c5b6acab2840dccc

Trump very often does something exactly after it is suggested by a news person and he denies it flatly, and insults them.

Cugel's avatar

IDK, not the craziest idea I've ever read.

rocksanddirt's avatar

No, it isn't the most out of the box idea. Which is why once it gets into his twitterfeed/fox viewing he will have to come out and say 'no way, joe s is full of it' call him names and then two weeks later resign for 'health reasons'.

DC Trojan's avatar

This guy seems nice:

“ A Maryland man who organized rallies to pressure Gov. Larry Hogan (R) to lift the state’s stay-home order says he has tested positive for the novel coronavirus and does not plan to provide names of people with whom he had contact to public health officials for contact tracing.”

Scootie's avatar

What a jackass. I also don't understand the American understanding of contact tracing as "notifying the people you know you've been in contact with." Contact tracing requires tracking down the people you DON'T know. I'm not sure any of our programs are attempting that which makes it not useless, but significantly less effective.

dcblue's avatar

He is so full of crap. Pressure finally got to Trump so he tries to back off.

“Sometimes I jokingly say, or sarcastically say, if we didn’t do tests we would look great,” Trump said in an interview during a Fox News town hall with Sean Hannity. “But you know what? It’s not the right thing to do.”

heyalumnigo's avatar

GBBR. Isn't that the same as paying the Giants to go to a game decked in Dodger Blue? I wonder if Pantone 294 will organize something for this? Especially if the Giants let you choose a seat for your face.

Scootie's avatar

If you pay to go to a game, you get to see a game. I mean, if you've got a spare $99 to be a non-impactful troll, go for it I guess, but why?

heyalumnigo's avatar

$99? charging more than regular seats? Though I guess STH probably have nicer seats so they're paying more than $99.

More about this:

https://www.sfgate.com/giants/article/Giants-fans-cardboard-cutouts-games-Oracle-Park-20-15371119.php

"While the move could possibly improve the ambiance of an empty Oracle Park, there is certainly precedent for it going poorly.... The English Football League's Leeds United had to issue a formal apology after a fan submitted an image of Osama bin Laden that appeared in the front row of a crowd at one of the team's games.

...The Giants employees with the unenviable task of screening the fan-submitted images will likely have their work cut out for them."

Love that last line!

Ruey Yen's avatar

Cal alum Collin Morikawa will fall a little bit short of Tiger Woods' record of consecutive cuts to open his PGA career. Morikawa is done after two rounds at +3 while the projected cut is at -3. I think Morikawa's streak ends up being 22 while Woods' record was 25.

Regarding a certain DBDers workplace: https://www.ebmud.com/wastewater/collection-treatment/wastewater-treatment-plant-tours/

My work is trying to offer virtual tours, and apparently, EBMUD does a really good job.

Ruey Yen's avatar

I don't know about this. I don't think a tour of wastewater treatment plant is the same without being able to smell. In the summer between 9th and 10th grade, my HS had a summer program where we did some research at the nearby wastewater treatment plant - we were literally baking the waste to see if the addition of polymer made them more solid (so it's cheaper to dispose since they did that by volume).

SGBear's avatar

I toured a wastewater plant in Singapore, which included free bottles of NuWater as a gift. NeWater was the brand name for the recycled sewage water turned into drinking water. SG did a remarkable job turning a huge amount of the island into a reservoir to guard against the real threat of Malaysia turning off the fresh-water taps to the island. But they grossly misunderstood how the general public would react to drinking their own treated toilet water. Sure it's chemically pure water - but nobody but me is going to relish drinking it except weirdos like me. I still have the bottle somewhere...
