I wonder how people who learned in non academic settings like TBB or myself would do. (I can barely read and I can't handwrite at all - maybe 100 characters?)
No 3 decided not to take any AP tests this year. He had at least 3 AP classes but I think he decided either he wasn't going to do well or didn't feel it would help.
As if the building collapsing in Florida wasn't enough nightmare fuel for me, there was the flooding in China that affected the subway system. Hundreds of people trapped in subway cars, waist to neck deep water (depending on how tall the person is). Water rushing by outside that is even higher.
currently 120+ dead. The subway photos are very scary because i am ALWAYS in the Shanghai subway. We're going to get hit with heavy rain when the tyhphoon hits this weekend - I think it's going to hit Taiwan/Fujian directly
I can't remember if I related this story before. Last time I was in the Bay Area I was at a restaurant with one of my brothers and his kids. A woman comes up to me and calls me Bobby and starts talking as if we were old friends. I had a blank look on my face, not recognizing her. She had mistaken me for Bob Weir of the Dead.
When I was a student, they would have a weeklong set of shows at the Greek every year. It was fully the invasion of the 'hippies of yesteryear'. This was before 'Touch of Grey' blew them up to an arena act.
I remember someone on my floor in Unit 3 was a fan. I said I knew Touch of Grey and thought it wasn't a bad song. She looked at me like I was a bandwagon fan. I really didn't care much for them but just thought it was a fine song.
The band was banned from playing in Berkeley. And yet, whenever they would play the Bay Area, you'd have microbuses finding one of the many broken meters in Berkeley and living there for days on end.
I *really* wanted a minidisc player, but they had that doomed look about them from the beginning - rather like DAT tapes, which at least had some value in making good concert recordings possible at a reasonable price
True, I have a (looks) a 5 CD Yamaha one that has been working just fine all these years, doesn't get much use now, if I'm spinning tunes on the stereo, it's vinyl.
Its now at least almost standard. At my agency the only people using PCs are HR and finance. At my previous mega corporations - the entire design used it and then the other previous mega corp - probably 50% of marketing used them
I had a Samsung windows phone circa 2010 that looked a bit like a Blackberry. It was actually a really good phone (inter alia, you could buy a "plus sized" battery with a different cover) even without data service, which was cripplingly expensive at the time.
Not sure if a Palm pda would count here, inasmuch as it was briefly an industry standard before smartphones left them behind.
I had an OG blackberry for work in a job I had in 2012 - 2013. Even the lawyers in the org, who had been the ones clinging on to the Blackberries, had had enough by that point. I quite liked it for work purposes.
I won an original RIM Blackberry 950 (I think) at a wireless conference in Monterey, maybe around . It looked like a 2 way pager with a full keyboard and it included free RIM wireless, supposedly only for 3 months but I think it went on for over a year. I had an app that connected to Outlook and I was able to get my emails over the BB. I played with it for a couple of months then I realized I didn't want to get my email away from the office so I stopped using it.
I've never hooked up work email to a phone. Especially my phone. I also generally will only use a work phone for work, not a personal one. If you want me to be available away from my desk, you need to make it happen.
Heh, I had a Windows Phone too that I also picked up in 2010. I liked the interface, and it served me well for 3-ish years until I switched to Android.
Automakers are finally starting to catch up with the segment of the market that doesn't want giant pickups (Ford Maverick, Hyundai...whatever their forthcoming small pickup is called). Utes would have been a great fit to satisfy that niche.
Some of the folks who work for our main operations contractor (the people who actually push, compact, and cover the trash) drive ancient Ford Rangers and Toyota pick ups. The perfect small ones that can handle everything a big truck does except ones fragile ego.
that Maverick gets pricey fast if you want some bells and whistles, but I suspect the base model may prove popular with independent tradesmen or tradespeople I suppose
Interesting. I like the look and size of it (not really a pickup guy but the extra bed space would be nice) and I really liked the price but if that's for the most basic I might pass.
My problem is that I can't reconcile my consumer preferences with my horror of massive depreciation. (also having a kid in college and another one pending does play into this)

It only took 21 hours for the Oakland A’s to sweep the Los Angeles Angels this week.
The A’s beat the Halos 6-0 on Tuesday afternoon, wrapping up a quick two-game series at the Coliseum. The first game began last night at 6:41 p.m. PT and Oakland won, and then the final out of today’s rematch was squeezed at 3:39 p.m., a couple minutes shy of 21 hours later.
Not only did the Angels never score in this one, they didn’t even reach third base. They put a few runners on against starter James Kaprielian, including a pair of sharp singles in the 2nd inning and then a pair of lucky soft singles in the 4th, but as usual he worked through traffic when needed and finished with six sparkling frames.
The San Francisco Giants had a golden opportunity.
After taking the season opener of their four-game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday, the Giants had a chance for a mighty meaningful second game. A win would put the Giants up three games on the Dodgers, guaranteeing that even if they got no-hit over the final 18 innings of the series, they’d depart LAX (after a two-hour car ride to the airport and three-hour wait in the TSA line) with a lead in the NL West.
A good, solid loss would have been understandable. You expect a fair amount of them against a team as good as the Dodgers. You respect them, almost. We teach our kids to lose smoothly. Think Michael Jordan striking out in Space Jam.
I was so very pissed at the end of the game. The bullpen just couldn't hold a 4-run lead. In fucking competence, started by that Brebbia dude. Brebbia allowed a double, scoring the inherited runner, and a 2-run shot. He did get two strikeouts, at least.
Rogers just totally pissed me off. Two straight walks and the winning 3-run shot. Didn't get a single out.
Nats had similar last night. Starter went five and gave up no runs. Reliever came in and walk, single, homer and they were behind 3-2. Fortunately it happened in the sixth and they could come back to win.
Chris Taylor started the Dodgers comeback on Tuesday night, and Will Smith ended it with a pinch-hit, three-run home run off Tyler Rogers to stun the Giants, 8-6 in the second game of the latest showdown series between these two teams.
Taylor, filling in for a second straight game in the leadoff spot with Mookie Betts out of the lineup, doubled and scored in the first inning for an early lead, but four San Francisco home runs put the road team up 6-1.
Taylor hit a solo home run in the fifth, then his two-run shot in the sixth pulled the Dodgers to within a run.
“My swing was in a good place tonight,” Taylor said.
Tyler Rodger's was off last night. He couldn't locate his 4-seamer and then he went to his UFO slider, which didn't UFO. His movement is usually so good on his slider that nobody gets a barrel on his pitches. But he hung it and it got smashed.
Washington State University [looking nervously between Nick Rolovich and their General Counsel]: "Uh. We're a public university, so we are required to say you should be vaccinated but we have been advised to say that exemptions can be legally granted for non-medical reasons."
College ball is a version of the pros, without the league minimum. Money will flow to the best players and the elite players will only go to a select few programs. We may never have another Marshawn, DeSean, Keenan, or Jason Kidd again.
I hope not but I surmise you are correct. We don't get the 5 stars anyway, though (at least not recently). It will be interesting seeing how the kids at Cal are able to utilize the NIL to create brands/sponsorships.
I somewhat disagree. We won't see the stars straight out of high school, unless some of the $$ alumni find ways to do what they are generally not to willing to. But most of our most productive players were not those stars. As a program, we need to keep to development and having good accountable coaches.
I think this money train for the stars will end up not helping most programs much. I think there is a good probability that the bid money going to the HS stars ends up not paying for wins on the field. These kids, some of whom this will be the first real money in their family, will lose focus on the game, and head to LA for a failed rap career.
And yet, this is supposed to be a reason why any Cal fan should want to see the NCAA continue with its reign of (t)error? Because now we don't have a shot at anything in football ever again?
I get that this is more widespread than just Cal. This could be a good thing for college athletics and for colleges in general. It might lead to a far more egalitarian landscape in college football, even if there are only a handful of bluebloods/major college football programs left to fight it out for the mythical national championship on the big stage.
How on earth is that more egalitarian? That's the opposite; Star QB's etc.. will be getting paid - but not linemen. If they're getting paid, can colleges fire them for poor performance?
Stanford and Cal tried to boot SC from the PCC and SC was suspended in 1924 for shenanigans... and Cal, UCLA, u-Dub, Oregon and SC all got caught paying players in the 50s which ultimately was what killed the conference.
So it wasn't clean and it wasn't egalitarian.
The damage for the contemporary game came from the rapid rise in television rights money - that allows the "top dog" conferences to spend on the kind of razzle-dazzle that supposedly brings in the players who 1) justify the rights money, and 2) position themselves for a pro career.
So at worst the NIL approach will reinforce that a bit. Or, it might allow local organizations to throw a little money to players who might not be raking in the cash but would appreciate something for their efforts.
I would go even further - NIL has the potential to alter recruiting. Given that the amateurism model has been killed by SCOTUS, what right does the NCAA have to punish *any program* with probation or sanctions of any kind for recruiting violations?
Amateurism was the very basis for the NCAA's power to investigate and punish college programs for recruiting violations, for violating academic standards and progress, unfair benefits, etc., etc.
Aside from enforcing an arbitrary calendar, what is the basis for the NCAA punishing anyone for anything?
It will change college football, not necessarily damage it. And I'm not so sure that whatever comes forward from this change won't be more egalitarian. The pressures of "Keeping up with the Joneses" may simply be too much in the new landscape forcing many current FBS schools to reevaluate if they want to continue in FBS.
"Some late night Cal Football news - DL and freshman All-American Brett Johnson will hold a press conference regarding an update on his season-ending hip injury tomorrow at 1 PT. We’ll keep you updated on this account #GoBears"
It's nothing. Literally nothing. When asked directly when he'll be back he said "As soon as possible" Makes no sense why the did a special press conference for nothing.
AP Scores out today
Hooray. SGB2.0 got 5s on all 3 tests.
Heh, that's what got me into Berkeley.
i didnt realize your scores on AP tests helped you get in. rather taking them and getting a decent grade.
i thought the scores only help if they let you opt of classes once you get to Cal because they are above some threshold.
luckily i had a combo of APs and college credits that allowed me to have a lot of flexibility in my schedule when i got to Cal.
but, things of course could have changed since a LOOOONG time ago.
Uh... High SAT, low GPA (2.1) I guess it was to prove I really knew the subjects? IDK
Wooooo! Where are they thinking about going to college?
SGB2.0's mouth says MIT, but I think they're lying to make their mom happy. I think their heart wants Northeastern. I have yet to talk to them about perhaps taking a trip out to SF to see Stanfurd and UC Berkeley.
Plenty of good football weekends this fall...
UNC-Chapel Hill is also in the running because it is only $8k/year. Plenty of $ left over for grad school.
UNC is a solid choice. Better than the other school 7 miles down the street.
I'm such a dumbass that for a second I thought you meant NC State not Duke, and was surprised that someone from outside North Carolina had that strong an opinion about NC State
is it only 7 miles? i figured it was more ...
good price for a solid school
the 16 year old won't have access to email for another 3 weeks so I guess I'll find out then

TBB, of course, is much more fluent than I am.
She probably speaks Mandarin better than I do. And I can't read at all, other than recognize a few words here and there.

Terrapin Station ... is my favorite of their works
The band was banned from playing in Berkeley. And yet, whenever they would play the Bay Area, you'd have microbuses finding one of the many broken meters in Berkeley and living there for days on end.
This is still the case. There's a spray painted microbus squatting around Berkeley as we speak.

I *really* wanted a minidisc player, but they had that doomed look about them from the beginning - rather like DAT tapes, which at least had some value in making good concert recordings possible at a reasonable price
Yeah, I've got some bootlegged concerts still kicking around in a box somewhere on a sweet minidisc
Both of you two are the only white people I know that know about mini-discs. It was a 90s Asian secret.
I was in on the minidisc craze, no skipping made it a huge positive.
Say what?
You could buy players and discs, including official releases, at the Tower records in El Toro back in the day
somehow, the 5-cd carousel that i bought while i was at Cal (1990) still works just fine.
you would think that w/ a rotating tray like that, it would have broken by now.
True, I have a (looks) a 5 CD Yamaha one that has been working just fine all these years, doesn't get much use now, if I'm spinning tunes on the stereo, it's vinyl.
Apple Macintosh. Strangely, I still use it.

Well, Betamax- it was clearly better! More resolution. Sigh

i think i had that too.

And yet, this is supposed to be a reason why any Cal fan should want to see the NCAA continue with its reign of (t)error? Because now we don't have a shot at anything in football ever again?
Not just about Cal, all but maybe top 10-8 programs.
The system in the past was vastly more egalitarian than the world we'll be in now, I think it will inevitably damage college football.
And that's good? I don't think you've thought this through.
No joke, for the life of me, I can't understand why the NCAA haters didn't see this coming.
I know this will come as a shock to everyone, but Mark Emmert donates to GOP politicians.

Oh no that doesn't sound good. If he transfers, I don't think he'll hold a press conference, but he could be announcing an end to football career.
It's nothing. Literally nothing. When asked directly when he'll be back he said "As soon as possible" Makes no sense why the did a special press conference for nothing.
i hope you are right.
No. It was literally nothing. Here's the presser.
