Congrats! I dropped No 2 off at Oakland Airport. He said they don't have monitors at the entrance of each dorm to prevent non-residents from entering. They've already busted at least 1 party at an off-campus apt (snitches). They sent around a tersely worded email that anyone getting caught hosting a party can be suspended for the semester (no tuition/housing reimbursement). They do allow a small gathering of up to 10 as long as they're socially distancing in a public space on campus.
I'm extended his return estimate from 4 weeks to 6 weeks.
I've been leasing cars, because my dad convinced me it was a better idea than buying a new one. This way I get a new car every 3 years and so there's minimal maintenance and I don't have to worry about mechanical issues. I usually negotiate until the monthly rate averages out to under $200 (including down payment) for a Honda Civic (although, this time, I chose an HR-V, so $250).
I have a 2005 Toyota Matrix and it's the perfect car (at least for a tall guy in San Francisco). Relatively short in length (yay, parking!), but tall with a hatch that is pretty much vertical, rather than sloped (more internal height). So, lots of storage in the hatch area and good legroom. And was only like $16k (2004 dollars).
They don't make them anymore and the "replacement" is the Corolla Hatch, which I was geeked about (~$22k, ~36 mpg)) until I went to see one. Shorter (my head kinda hits the roof) and less interior storage and legroom. The HR-V and Elantra GT are intriguing but a bit more $$ (for the HR-V) and a lot less mpg (for both). Need to see how long they are (again, parking).
Anyone have experience with a mid-version Matrix and have a replacement suggestion?
I guess I'd rather pay it off so I don't keep making payments. I'd rather drive it until it dies. My 04 TSX is at 189K. I'm thinking 250K should be no problem and the way I'm driving it I'll be at least 6 years before I hit that. When it dies, or if I decide to replace it earlier, I'm probably going to look at a Model 3.
Yeah, I don't really drive enough for a lease to make sense. I bought my car 4 years ago, it'll be paid off next year with maybe 30K miles on it, and then I should have it at least a decade longer with no payment.
I guess I really don't care to always have a new car every 3 years. Once i find a car I like I want to keep driving it and not have to make payments. I'm keeping the TSX because you can't find a stick in a decent driving car anymore. Most of the new cars are drive by wire and the you don't feel the road. I remember driving the 2nd gen TSX and it had a sterile feel. No 1 said I should just get an STI. Which he's probably right. It would be perfect.
Love it! Its overall size is slightly smaller than the current model of the Civic (important for finding street parking) but the interior feels spacious. I also really like the visibility and feeling of security that comes from being higher than a sedan. I don't do much non-city driving, but it was also a comfort to be driving the HR-V rather than a Civic when we went camping.
I'd had 3 Civics in a row before this, but I don't think I'll go back.
I’ve been thinking about an HR-V as a replacement for my Civic that might be easier for novice drivers (and my short wife) to use. This is helpful feedback!
I'm car shopping for No 3. He likes the mid-late 2000 Golf or Accord. He wants a GTI but I think I'm staying away from higher power cars. I'd even take a mid-late 2000 TSX. Unfortunately he can't drive a stick yet otherwise I'd just let him drive my TSX. If anyone knows someone selling a mid-late 2000 japanese car, let me know.
weird...part of my vision is acting like I'm getting an optical migraine, but without the headache. Sometimes when I look into a bright light a portion of my vision gets weird where the light was. Out of focus and wavy. Usually it's accompanied by a migraine. I looked into a white background in a word document and it started happening.
The nerve block they put on my knee when I had my Achilles repaired was very weird after I woke up. Obviously just totally numb below my knee. A weird sensation.
I want to say I've been put under 3 times. Once for my wisdom teeth back in middle school. Then my achilles and my broken finger.
I wasn't knocked out for my root canal. That wasn't that bad. I was looking at the reflection on the dentist's face shield so I could try to see what was going on. Couldn't see too much detail.
I've always wondered why some small sports cars have a rear view mirror on the dash rather than at the top of the windshield. One thing I notice on the Miata, since it's so low, is that the mirror gets in the way when I'm trying to see things, mostly when driving on windy hills. When it's uphill, the mirror gets right in the way when I try to see bikers for example. Or sometimes trying to see the stop light. If there was a rear view mirror on the dash, it wouldn't block the view.
I was aware of the video but I tapped out after watching the one about his restomod Datsun 510, which seemed like a really cool alternative to something like an Alfa Romeo Giulia breathed on by Alfaholics
Alone (S6): binged the whole season on Netflix. While half the show is Establishing Shots that I fast-forwarded past, was surprisingly good. Danbury, Connecticut will name sewage plant after John Oliver
After John Oliver's tirade against Danbury, it's going to name it's sewage plant after him. Like that's going to phase him. I'm sure he'll embrace it, like he did after Russell Crowe donated the money received when John Oliver bought the Cinderella Man jockstrap from the Blockbuster and made "The John Oliver Koala Chlamydia Ward" at the Australia Zoo.
I can’t think of one major highway in CT that doesn’t blow. One time I spent 2 hours driving 5 miles through “greater” Danbury because some fuckwit agreed to having a bridge for a local road over 84 that had no shoulders underneath it. A semi truck had tipped over and dumped cargo under the bridge. We all had to exit the highway to the Danbury Mall and then pick up a local road to get back the highway- and the state troopers and local cops were just letting people sit at the traffic lights rather than waving traffic through. That’s the major road to get from central PA and eastern NY into New England.
Watched the first two episodes of Teenage Bounty Hunters. They were enjoyable and I will be finished up the remaining episodes, maybe this week.
I don't know if anyone else watches The Chi (Showtime), but the season finale was yesterday. I haven't seen it yet but I just watched the previous one, and WOW. What a shocker at the end of that one.
Don't think I bought anything objectively gross, but I misforecast my desires in a few areas. Still have some of my original pasta, and almost all of my cans of tomatoes.
I had most of a can of tomatoes left, so I decided to mix the cheese powder into that (along with some mushrooms and some herbs), making for quite a yummy boxed mac and cheese.
To me, they don't have a strong flavor, it's nice to know that I'm not consuming carbs, and they're thin enough that they hold the flavor of sauce well.
Marko Ramius, Captain of the Red October, hailed from there. Known as the Vilnius Schoolmaster, Ramius was a 3-star combo guard out of high school...excellent handle, with range.
I just love how Tim Curry is in it...I saw him in the movie Clue at the original Rockridge Cinemas II, down on Broadway across from Oakland Tech...man, I saw some great movies there...Romancing the Stone, Top Gun, The Power of One, Naked Gun...I miss movie theaters, especially that one.
Rockridge #1 was up the street from Tech, next to what used to be the Safeway/Petco, across the street from Wendy’s. Man, saw Bill & Ted’s & a Clash if Titans/DragonSlayer double feature there! But 2 was down in the little cul de sac across from Tech, next to a Burger King.
Except in the book Jack Ryan isn't in the middle half of the book (I think it's that part). He also never gets on the submarine. The general Red October storyline doesn't change.
CHARLOTTE — Republicans will officially forgo the creation of a party platform Monday, approving a series of resolutions that condemn “cancel culture,” endorse “America First principles” and otherwise link their agenda to Trump.
Yeah. I think he did it before the eephus pitch yesterday. Though he did point down a 1 twice so maybe that was to throw off the batter.
I remember the Greg Maddux story where the bullpen catcher thought he could catch Maddux's pitch with his eyes closed. It took a few attempts and he did have to have someone say "now" to close his glove but they were able to do it pretty quickly.
Best part of that was at the end, after Maddux (disguised as the sound guy) has asked if he can get an autographed bat from Bryant, and then they do the reveal... right before the end Bryant says "you still want my bat?" and Maddux is like, "no."
Greinke's been throwing eephuses his whole career. I saw him play the A's once when he was younger and with the Royals, and I think he threw a 95 mph fastball, a 75 mph curve, and a 55 mph eephus.
Ball was flying out of Petco...juiced, or just hot hot hot weather so more carry, even near the water? When Gresham is going oppo for his 3rd of the night, something is up....
Balls were flying out of Dodger stadium all weekend as well. It's the hot weather with the wind blowing out. Against the Rockies, both teams hit some HRs that definitely were wind aided. High fly balls that barely got out. Most of the games started in the low to mid 90s at gametime.
The Oakland A’s 2020 season series against the Los Angeles Angels ended exactly how it began — with a walk-off victory for Oakland in the 10th inning.
Mark Canha pushed across the winning run with a sacrifice fly, and the A’s overcame the Halos on Sunday 5-4 in their 10th and final meeting of the year. Oakland captured six of those 10 matchups.
The A’s began their season with a similar win over the Angels on Opening Day, in which they fell behind, caught up, went to extras, and won on a walk-off grand slam by Matt Olson. Sunday’s winning drive by Canha was less dramatic, but it still yielded the same result in the standings and brought the season series full circle.
The Angels were in control for most of the day, thanks to an early homer by Shohei Ohtani. However, the A’s chipped away against one of their top nemeses of the summer, starting pitcher Dylan Bundy, and by the end of the 6th they’d tied the score. It remained that way through the end of regulation, forcing extra innings.
Sunday’s game between the San Francisco Giants and Arizona Diamondbacks was quite similar to Saturday’s. It was a pitcher’s duel for quite long time, with neither team able to do much offensive damage. The Giants took a 1-0 lead, then the Diamondbacks tied it 1-1. And then, as soon as the game was tied, the Giants offense caught fire.
The difference was that Sunday’s offense came from the Giants bats, instead of their eyes.
A day after the Giants drew 8 walks, including a pair with the bases loaded, they found the long ball once again.
In the bottom of the sixth, with Arizona pitcher Luke Weaver trying to secure a shutdown inning after his offense finally tied things up, he ran into the birthday boy: Mike Yastrzemski.
The weather in Los Angeles was hot on Sunday afternoon, but the Dodgers’ bats were hotter, as they hit seven home runs en route to their 11-3 victory over the Rockies. They swept Colorado, and now own an MLB-best record of 22-8.
Corey Seager got things going right away with the dinger-party, hitting his seventh of the season in the bottom of the first inning.
After a dinger from the Rockies tied the game, Mookie Betts joined the fun and hit his 10th homer of the season, the first Dodger to reach double digits. By the way, we’re going to be talking more about Betts in a little bit, so don’t worry.

Yeah I'll bet she's full of spunk
Literally everything is projection with these people

Oh Really?

When the first report came out two years ago, I Jerry Jr. was gay.
Maybe he just likes to watch?
The top picture in that story is taken along the C&O canal that I run regularly. Have to be careful from now on.
That was the first thing I noticed (the location anyway) before the schadenfreude kicked in
Careful... to avoid amorous poolboys? Reuters photographers?
Any and all.
But what about amorous poolgirls?
oh wow. I saw the story earlier but hadn't read it. He actually admitted to it and threw her under the bus. Not very Christian-like.

Guess who has 2 thumbs and dropped his daughter off at college on Saturday?
Congrats! I dropped No 2 off at Oakland Airport. He said they don't have monitors at the entrance of each dorm to prevent non-residents from entering. I hope she loves her college experience! Or at least isn't traumatized...
Sounds like orientation via zoom has been a mixed bag
Sounds like a typical college orientation then.
What's the over/under on when you'll have to bring her home again?
The college really is trying so I would guess they’ve got at least a month before it comes unstuck
Fingers crossed for her!
Car shopping

I wonder if the new Corolla Hatch is trying to be more sporty and complete with the Mazda 3 hatch.

Yeah, if I did have to get a new car, that's exactly what I would get.
My old roommate at Cal has one and it's pretty rad.
How do you like the HR-V by comparison to the Civic?

As a short driver, it really does help you feel less like you're going to be run off the road by every monster truck that zooms by
My wife has become very attached to a high driving position after years in a minivan
What are you looking for?
I'm car shopping for No 3. He likes the mid-late 2000 Golf or Accord. He wants a GTI but I think I'm staying away from higher power cars. I'd even take a mid-late 2000 TSX. Unfortunately he can't drive a stick yet otherwise I'd just let him drive my TSX. If anyone knows someone selling a mid-late 2000 japanese car, let me know.
Why not a Mazda 3?
The newer ones were way low on power. I test drove a 2012 and floored it on the onramp and it didn't accelerate very well.
...maybe, but my wife has to buy something new first. 2006 Accord Hybrid, with low miles >50K I think
That’s an amusing contrast to the M5
Heh, she doesn't drive like I do.
I may be interested. @Tell her to get on it!@
Optical Migraine

Well after a Mountain Dew it seems to be better.
When I had this, the doc called it “March of a scintillating schitoma”
yeah that kind of sounds like it.
It is NOT a Toomur.
OK folks, I'm off for a couple of weeks. Headed to Tahoe just so I can breathe air worse than that in the Bay Area.
Have a good time! Ooh...that's a good idea when working remote.
Bon voyage!

Anesthesia
The nerve block they put on my knee when I had my Achilles repaired was very weird after I woke up. Obviously just totally numb below my knee. A weird sensation.
I want to say I've been put under 3 times. Once for my wisdom teeth back in middle school. Then my achilles and my broken finger.
I've never been put under. Not even for my wisdom teeth removal or root canal and I really wish I had been unconscious for both.
I wasn't knocked out for my root canal. That wasn't that bad. I was looking at the reflection on the dentist's face shield so I could try to see what was going on. Couldn't see too much detail.
[Anesthesiologist]: "We are giving you a nerve block, then a mix of propofol, fentanyl, and versed if we need it."
[me]: "Ah, Doc you're are NOT messing around. Let's party."
[Dr. Feelgood, quickly dumping two syringes into my IV]: "You should start to feel it now."
[me]: "It is cold but I don't feel any diff..."
[me, being tapped awake, fully dressed in the post-op area]: "...erent."
I don't think I've ever been anesthetized, except locally. Never been out.
same
My favorite is, "OK, count backwards from 100." Scootie: 100, 99, 98 ZZZzzzzzzzz
I'm not even sure I'd make it to 98.
But what did he give you to take home? Hope you're doing OK.
Prescribed 60 Oxy. I took only 12 and stopped. Am taking ibu/tylenol + 1/4 of a gummie at night. Doing ok, but my right hand is useless
60! Pretty sure they can't do that in CA, max is 30. Have to go back and see the doc to get a refill.
I think I know how the Notre Dame CGB tailgate is being funded!
I am so looking forward to this....
Let me know how many u need
I think they gave me Percocet after my achilles surgery. Surprisingly the pain wasn't too bad. I think I only needed to take it 2-3 times.

Great...now I want to go for a drive. Guess I'll do a loop up Tilden, around to Skyline, then back on Redwood.

I wonder how close Connery's accent was to an actual Lithuanian accent. Probably Lituanian from the Scottish part of town.
I've always enjoyed the movie, but it's funny how half the actors playing Soviets are trying to do the accent and the other half aren't.

i love the movie...i just ignore the accents.
Watching Chernobyl, I don't think they even tried accents, and I think that works better than doing them poorly.
They definitely just had everyone use their normal accents in that one.
Really enjoyed the movie, though, out of necessity, it was so much different than the book.
I did read the book later and IIRC most of the plot is the same, there are just some other subplots that got left out (which always happens).
Except in the book Jack Ryan isn't in the middle half of the book (I think it's that part). He also never gets on the submarine. The general Red October storyline doesn't change.

Funny thing about that car, it was designed to appeal to a young crowd, but was mainly bought by middle aged dudes.
like active middle aged dudes that would put their dirty bikes or dogs in the back?
Maybe, but car companies are always try to make something the youths will buy, so they develop brand loyalty. Total fail.

CHARLOTTE — Republicans will officially forgo the creation of a party platform Monday, approving a series of resolutions that condemn “cancel culture,” endorse “America First principles” and otherwise link their agenda to Trump.

The Mavs/Clippers game was bonkers. Doncic is so much fun to watch.
The Padres sure can hit. 5 grand slams over 6 games. 4 vs the Rangers and 1 against the Assterisks.
3rd inning and Greinke threw this

He could be the Greg Maddux of this generation.
You saw him calling his own pitches out loud from the mound against the Giants a couple weeks ago? lol
I also love the Greg Maddux prank on Kris Bryant.
Best part of that was at the end, after Maddux (disguised as the sound guy) has asked if he can get an autographed bat from Bryant, and then they do the reveal... right before the end Bryant says "you still want my bat?" and Maddux is like, "no."
I love watching him pitch.
Greinke's been throwing eephuses his whole career. I saw him play the A's once when he was younger and with the Royals, and I think he threw a 95 mph fastball, a 75 mph curve, and a 55 mph eephus.
And he sat down behind the mound to oversee the ground crew working on the mound.
Ball was flying out of Petco...juiced, or just hot hot hot weather so more carry, even near the water? When Gresham is going oppo for his 3rd of the night, something is up....
Supposedly the balls are not as juiced as last year.
Balls were flying out of Dodger stadium all weekend as well. It's the hot weather with the wind blowing out. Against the Rockies, both teams hit some HRs that definitely were wind aided. High fly balls that barely got out. Most of the games started in the low to mid 90s at gametime.
Dodgers hit 7 homers yesterday
and a lot of them were heat/wind aided.
They still count!
Oakland A’s Game #29: Mark Canha walk-off seals 5-4 win, season series victory over Angels
https://www.athleticsnation.com/2020/8/23/21398450/oakland-as-game-29-los-angeles-angels-walk-off
The Oakland A’s 2020 season series against the Los Angeles Angels ended exactly how it began — with a walk-off victory for Oakland in the 10th inning.
Can-do Canha is clutch.
Look at the Giants go!
https://www.mccoveychronicles.com/2020/8/23/21398264/san-francisco-giants-diamondbacks-final-score
Dodgers hit seven homers as they sweep Rockies
https://www.truebluela.com/2020/8/23/21398427/los-angeles-dodgers-rockies-recap-mookie-betts-cody-bellinger-corey-seager
