Being a long suffering Bear fan, I'm trying to temper my excitement about the recent offensive hires. They all look pretty good and I find myself looking forward to next season. But there is something few of the comments I have read over the past few years have touched upon--which is Cal's inability to attract really top level talent. We have lost a lot of games because the other teams just had better players than we do. It seems like we haven't recruited more than one four star recruit per year during the Wilcox era. . I don't know if its academic standards, reluctance of good players to come to a program with a consistently mediocre record, the inability to meet the current NIL market of just poor recruiting. We just need better players. This is one of the principal reasons we need a coaching change. When Jeff Tedford was hired, he was able to convince talented recruits that the program would turn around, and he backed it up. It's hard for Wilcox to make that argument after a nine-year .500 record.
Well, we did just narrowly lose what would have been our first 5-star QB since Kyle Boller, and allegedly by the hands of our most beloved QB since Joe Roth. That happened or may have happened. You really can't make this stuff up. Being a Cal fan is not for the weak of heart.
Since Tedford was let go. The administration "increased / made it harder" the academic entry requirements for recruits. The administration has long expressed, from my observation since 1973, a total dislike for the football program and the high operating costs, to disappear completely and concentrate on academics (nobel prize). Until Cal gets a sports friendly Chancellor and athletic director will the football, mbb and wbb programs become viable. I'm hoping this years mbb and wbb programs breaks thru and become successful. Followed by the football team next year.
The football players and recruits need to realize besides the NIL, there is value in receiving a high academic education at Cal while playing. Thinking about life after football is just / more important. Not everyone is going to the NFL. Certainly not after the final cut down to 45+ player limit.
It looks like the new offensive coaches was able to get average players to maximize
their playing ability thru their (better ?) coaching. Then making due with what Cal has
going into the 2025 will decide if the better (4+ star) players will start paying attention and make Cal their choice to sign / commit. Tedford did this during his first years at Cal.
Apparently, he’s extended family with former C Marvin Phillip. He acknowledged him in a tweet when he got hired talking about continuing what Marvin started when we was here. Gave me all the feels.
His stats are amazing. I also like that he and the WR coach are both young, with energy that should help with recruiting. Open up the Hawaiian pipeline!
Scheme and a QB that is a proficient runner contribute a lot to the "no sack" metric.
What caught my eye was that Anae was able to do this despite losing 2 starters to injury and the OL, previously, had never played together. Regardless of scheme, this is impressive.
Due to medical retirement, Anae only played 2 seasons of college ball. Early on he must've been focused on coaching and learning his craft. We shall see how things go. Should Cal land 1 or 2 of NMS' OL portal transfers this may help Anae implement and teach his techniques.
His dad is a longtime college OL coach and the current OC at NC State. He grew up learning the craft and has some great role models to learn from. Pretty cool father and son will be coaching in the same conference now.
Last two hires seem solid. Yet, in a world of wins we will not know if anything makes sense with Wilcox as HC. I just know it always starts at the top. As for Bloesch or Gilbert, Gilbert was always questionable and the kids (previous schools) do not seem to be a big fan. If they were fans, maybe Mendoza would have stayed? Lets see where they end up and how we do with this new offensive coaching team.

I dig it. Hope he brings over some beef
Forget all this. Was he an anti vaxxer? If so then we should hate this hire.
No need to stir the pot.
Just confirming this is sarcasm, right? Due to our Hawaiian Bear friend?
the hawaiian friend is actually from the bay i think

5 sacks given up all season!?
This year seemed like Cal had quarters where they gave up 5 sacks!

Foundational hire, if it works.. solid OL is basis to build on. Without this nothing else works, or minimally doesn’t work as well.
This is the best offensive hire Wilcox has made in this cycle and perhaps the best in his entire tenure.
Well see.....do you get excited when you see, New Mexico State. I think I driven through the state once or twice.
Nex Mexico
Nev Mexico
Haha oops.
I was hoping we could keep it going.
Now we’re cooking. A+
Best Staff in decades
Well that is very impressive result. Our OL performance was...not close to that. This guy seems worth a try.
I like this hire.
Yes, and thank heavens no coaches will be let go.
