one thing I noticed with both the Madsen plays was use of double screens. Maybe Madsen learned that from the NBA since he runs a NBA offense, or maybe he learned it from Coach Monty who loved the double screen
vs the KK play that relied on a much simpler quick double pass.
One of my complaints about Fox's offense was lack of using anything but a single ball screen to get a shot.
There was also a curl screen at the top of the key for Cone that resulted in an open three. The play worked and the Bears could have run it again since WSU stayed in the same defensive set.
I was at the EWU game last year and the WSU game and remember both plays. The Tyson play was drawn up and executed so well. Coaching does make a difference!
I share your enthusiasm for the direction our Golden Bears are headed generally and particularly with Coach Madsen's aggressive offensive style. A quibble though regarding defensive strategy in late game ATOs. I suffered through the UW game with many of you and was frustrated by our defensive approach to the ATO shots the Huskies got at both the 30 second mark and the game winner. In both cases there were open looks after two passes, and in both cases Fardaws is standing under the basket throughout the play. at 0:30 I understand leaving him in but at 0:04.4 we need mobile defenders to protect the perimeter. Can someone explain why we don't substitute in a better perimeter defender? 'Daws is great defensively but not capable of meeting the need of that particular situation and it seemed to happen again against WSU.
The UW basket was not after a timeout, so I skipped it for this article. I still almost included it from a defensive angle.
I still think I trust Aimaq more than Larson or Newell as a rim defender (as in the block) in similar situations. UW needed only 2 and Madsen said that Cal was focused on defending Keion.
Cal spammed that same Spain pick and roll set down the stretch vs. Colorado for Jaylon and it was ultimately the reason why they won that game. Buffs had no answer for it.
Yup. Along with that, we're seeing alot more action where Cone rides the elevator or kicks out from the stack up the lane. I prefer that than his motion starting in the corner.
love your film rooms

See my response to Jrue. I like the stack formations in the lane where Cone shoots out or has a high screen from Aimaq.

thanks
I love reading these pieces
Someone provided me with the perfect header picture to pair with it.
Great piece. In HS I loved the ATOs as our coach always gave us 3 options on those plays..
I set the over/under for hope in the future at 10 wins this season. I'm almost certain the Bears will exceed that number.
Go Bears!
