We’re Going Up!
Just over a hundred years ago, the City of Berkeley came together to discuss building height requirements in 1926, agreeing to a limit of around 6 stories or 150 feet. William Wallace Campbell, then the University of California’s president told the commission “the university would hate to see a skyline of ‘skyscrapers’ along Shattuck Avenue.
Flash forward to last week where the university broke ground on a 23-story dorm in downtown Berkeley at the Bancroft-Fulton Student Housing Project! The new dorms will add a desperately needed 1600-beds at a whopping 276 feet. Expect Oski-zilla to be there for the official opening.
MAGNETAR
UC Berkeley scientists discovered a new Pokemon astronomical wonder this week witnessing the birth of a magnetar, a highly magnetized spinning neutron star. These magnetars have been confirmed to be the power source behind the brightest exploding stars in the cosmos, corroborating a theory first proposed nearly 16 years ago by Dan Kasen, UC Berkeley Theoretical Astrophysicist.
