Golden Nuggets: Cheeseboard, SETI, and Turn the Radio Up
Is that the Calgorithm on the radio?
Hello and welcome to Golden Nuggets, our weekly recap article where we try to highlight all the fun, funny, or interesting things you might have missed roughly over the last week across Bear Territory (the whole damn world of course). Think of it like a cheat sheet for small talk about Cal.
Cheeseboard Collective Expansion
We start this week with Berkeley’s 2nd Most Famous Pizzeria (West Coast Pizza RIP TO A REAL ONE) set to finally get a long-awaited expansion.
The Cheeseboard Collective, located on Shattuck in North Berkeley is set to begin construction to knock down a wall and expand into the adjacent Bakery and Cheese shoppe and Grocery store next door. Construction should be complete in late Spring/early Summer and like reopened before school starts back up next year. Read more here in SF Gate.

SETI Sets Sights on Signals
I have a vivid memory back in 2009 walking around the Band dorm and being dumbfounded by the screen saver on a friend’s computer. They’d go on to explain that through the SETI@Home project, they were letting their computer help process data received from campus as part of the Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence. Now, researchers are diving deeper into some results that could yield something fun! Read more here.
Olden Bears Profile
The College of Letters and Science this week profiled Olden Bears, a group of Berkeley alumni raising funds for first-generation students, youth in foster care, student athletes and other UC Berkeley students in need. Read more about their efforts here!
Calgorithm on the Radio
KALW came out and interviewed a number of Calgorithm members at the Virginia game and released the piece here. Give it a listen for Nick Kranz or me messing up the lyrics to ‘Ott to Go.’

Love the SETI@Home callback! That project was genuinely ahead of its time with distributed computing, and it's cool they're still finding signal patterns worth investigating. The whole concept of crowdsourcing idle CPU cycles to search for extraterrestrial intelligence felt like scifi back then. Also the Cheeseboard expansion is long overdue, thatline has been insane for years. Great roundup as always!
Loved the KALW interview with Nick and the whole Calgorithm profile.
