Hello and welcome to the back-from-the-dead Golden Nuggets, your one stop shop for tangy, sweet, and savory Cal content. For those unfamiliar with this general sort of article, I’m going to do my best to highlight some of the stuff you may have missed that is Cal-related or Cal-adjacent over the last week. Trick or Treat!
Senior Day Galore!
I don’t know how it happened, but we’re well into Fall now and many Cal sports teams are wrapping up their seasons soon and hosting Senior Day.
Congrats to Cal Field Hockey Seniors Cassidy Puleo, Gracie Jimenez, Sophie Everett, Monet Stuckey, Sydney Decher, Elana Eisenberg!
Congrats to Cal Women’s Soccer Seniors Alexis Wright, Ari Manrique, Karlie Lema, Velize King, Cailin Bloom, Courtney Boone, Kei Kitamura, Jordyn Young, Aaliyah Schinaman, Noelle Bond-Flasza, and Emily Moberly!

Nohl Williams Watch: Day 60
Nohl Williams continues to impress. Nohl recently got a ratings boost in EA’s CFB 25 moving up to a rating of 91, one of the highest on the team. Nohl was also named as a semifinalist (one of 15) for the Jim Thorpe Award given to the nation’s best Defensive Back. Nohl continues to lead the country in interceptions and is sure having himself a season. Keep it up Nohl!
The Treats Keep Coming
It sure was a good week to be a bear. Cal Field Hockey Freshman Liz Klompmaker was named ACC Offensive Player of the Week. President Fernando Mendoza was named ACC Quarterback of the Week. Derek Morris was named ACC Specialist of the Week. Morris was also named Lou Grouza Award Star of the Week. Cal Field Hockey Coach Onstead recorded her 300th Win. Congrats all!
The Calgorithm Decides The Election
Early Tuesday, Calgorithm Twitter users noticed that Fernando Mendoza was named one of the eight quarterbacks up for vote as the “Manning Award Star of the Week.” Fernando was initially down 70 votes to Appalachian State’s Joey Aguilar but as of the time I’m writing this (9 PM), Fernando holds a solid 2000 vote lead on second place. I’ve seen enough. I’m calling it. Fernando Mendoza is your Manning Award Star of the Week. Thanks for the support Calgorithm! I mean how many Quarterbacks throw a Touchdown…to themselves?
Spooky Szn in Haas Pavilion
Cal Women’s Basketball is hosting “Cal-O-Ween” tomorrow at Haas Pavilion with trick or treating at 6 PM, an exhibition game against sentient investment account Vanguard at 7 PM, a Half-Time Costume Parade, more trick or treating after the game, and Hide and Seek with Oski where all the lights are turned off (just kidding. kind of.).
The fun continues on Saturday with an Open Practice at 12 in Haas and a Block Party at 2 PM at Spieker Plaza!
Bears Doing Good
Jeff Faurado of Sports Illustrated.com wrote a nice profile on Cal Men’s Basketball Mady Sissoko focused on his philanthropy work in his African village where he’s built a new school and a wall. Nice work Mady!
I Think I’m Gonna Hurl
Hurling is an Irish spot gaining popularity globally despite being around for nearly 3,000 years. Cal Hurling is crowdfunding to get enough money to make the trip to the National Collegiate Gaelic Athletic Association National Championship and has 2 days left in their campaign and is currently just under $2500 short! Send our Cal Hurlers to Nationals and donate here!
I Like Tall Buildings and I Cannot Lie
The SF Chronicle wrote an article detailing campus’ most ambitious plan for student housing, a 23-story, 1,634 bed dorm on the corner of Bancroft Way and Fulton St. Construction is at least a year away and completion another 3-4, but it’s good to know housing is on the way!
The Seaweed Is Always Greener
The UC Berkeley Energy and Biosciences Institute received nearly $13 million this week to establish a center advancing the use of seaweed in the global supply chain. Given their quick ability to grow, many of thought (and Berkeley students will now investigate!) this resource as possible source of fuel, food, and other products. Here’s hoping they can improve the pickle taste of kelp!
Something Chemistry Related
Listen I got a C in Chem 1B I’m just going to copy this straight from the article.
“A team of UC Berkeley chemists have developed a potential solution in the form of yellow crystalline powder, a half-pound of which can absorb as much carbon dioxide annually as a tree. Deployed at scale, the material could significantly reduce the amount of carbon in the atmosphere in a way no other technology can, said Omar Yaghi, professor of chemistry and UC Berkeley and lead author of a paper announcing their discovery, which was published Wednesday in the journal Nature. “ But what we really want to know is…
Cal Athletics Roundup
Cal Field Hockey beat Louisville and lost to Wake Forest. Cal Volleyball lost to Stanford. Cal Rugby went undefeated at a tournament across 6 games. Cal Football beat Oregon State Washington State Oregon State. Cal Women’s Soccer beat SMU and a beauty of a goal to seal it. Cal Men’s Soccer was shutout by Notre Dame.
Cal Pros Roundup
Jared Goff posted the highest passer rating of any QB in the month of October despite a pedestrian game going 12-15 for 85 yards and 3 TDs (no worries the Lions won 52-14.). Chris Brooks had a great game for the Packers with some great heads up plays. Jaylon Tyson got his first NBA points.
That’s it for now. Rest up Bears and enjoy your self-care week!
IMO these are great for connecting across the greater CAL sports scene. Thanks!
Support Cal WBB. Two free events upcoming. Exhibition game on Thursday night and open practice on Saturday afternoon. Season opener on Monday November 4 vs. St Mary's at 6 pm. Go Bears!!!
