Golden Nuggets: Tick Tock Atomic Clocks, Senior Day for Women's Soccer and Field Hockey, and some Cal Football Puff Pieces?
tick tock tick tock
Hello and welcome to Golden Nuggets, our weekly recap article where we try to highlight all the fun, funny, or interesting things you might have missed roughly over the last week across Bear Territory (the whole damn world of course).
Tick Tock Goes The Clock
UC Berkeley News as part of their “101 in 101” series challenged UC Berkeley physicist Shimon Kolkowitz to explain the atomic clock operating in his lab in 101 seconds or less. It’s a fascinating video taking you into the Physics department showing a lot of the cutting edge research going on at Berkeley. Also there’s a lot of opportunity to make “clock management” jokes. Or maybe something about refs actually using correct clock timing on the field. Or also pointing out that clocks are easy I have one on my wrist this isn’t that hard.
Joking aside, I love being able to take a step into these world’s I’d otherwise never think about. Read the article here and watch Prof. Kolkowitz explain atomic clocks in the video below.
Senior Day for Field Hockey and Women’s Soccer
Field Hockey celebrated their graduating seniors this past week against Stanford. Congrats to seniors Morgan Kallmann, Olivia Sharratt, Samantha Imokawa, Audrey Post, Tiny Jolly, and graduate students Cassidy Puleo, Lieve Schalk, and Zara Schmitz!
Cal Women’s Soccer also celebrated Senior Day this past week. Congrats to graduating seniors Teagan Wy, Alex Klos, Lumi Kostmayer, Coco Thistle, and Noelle Bond-Flasza!
Hot Links
Pardon Our Dust
Daily Cal this week had the hot scoop talking about how the many Cal Spirit Groups are being consolidated for some greater ease of management and streamlining under some new, to-be-hired staff! My read is that nothing really should change except for a streamlined bureaucracy. Hooray! Read the article here.
Oui Oui
Women’s Basketball headed out to Paris this past week and just missed out on the Louvre Heist. But they seemed to have a good time all the same!
Berkeley’s Best Haunts by Jaron, Devin, and Aidan
The Athletic caught up with some Cal Football players this past week to hear more about life in Berkeley, where to go before and after the game, and where the good eats are. And no one saw them refer to us as Cal-Berkley.
Read the full puff piece (Thanks Ron!) here.
Saving College Sports?
This last link is a little bit disconnected, but involves broader college sports in general, and was an interesting enough read. The New York Times interviewed Cody Campbell, Texas Tech Super Booster and driving force behind the Save College Sports Act working its way through Congress. Oh and if you watch Cal Football or any ESPN/FOX game, you’ve probably seen the ads. It’s an interesting read! Oh also read Bill Connelly’s book Forward Progress. Or go get it from your local library!
Looking at the Schedule
The Cal Women’s Gymnastics Schedule dropped! Catch them in Berkeley on 1/24, 2/20, 3/7, and 3/13-3/15.
