Insta-Recap: Down 20, Cal Comes Back to Beat the Buffs 82-78.
The entire second half was a Tyson Takeover
Jaylon Tyson scored 23 of his game-high 30 points after halftime to lead the Bears to an improbable comeback victory Wednesday night.
Colorado had a 19-point lead, 50-31, at 17:18 left in the game. Cal was shooting 24% for the game and settling for midrange shots. Buffalo C Eddie Lampkin was a force down low, getting repeatedly to the basket on his way to a team-high 22 points.
From that point on, Cal outscored the Buffs 51-28. The Bears were more aggressive going to the basket and the 3-point shots started falling. For the second half, Cal was 9-of-15 from deep, 58% shooting overall. Fardaws Aimaq was in continual foul trouble, and picked up his fifth foul with just over 2 minutes remaining. Gus Larson provided steady minutes as his replacement down the stretch.
Cal took a 1-point lead at 5:38 left on a Jaylon Tyson slam dunk. The teams traded baskets and the lead for the next few minutes. Tied at 70-70, Jalen Cone hit a 3-pointer with 2:33 left to give Cal the lead for good. With Cal leading 80-78, Colorado’s Tristan Da Silva had a wide open 3-point attempt to take the lead with under 10 seconds left, but his shot was off the mark. Jalen Cone hit two free throws to give Cal the 4-point final margin.
Cal travels to Eugene to play the Oregon Ducks on Saturday.
Cal needs to keep running their offense through Tyson. Watch Iowa WBB game and you can see how Cal should run their offense without the number of TOs and movement of the other players.
Great win. But boy that first half was bad! Credit Colorado for some of that, but we still need consistency.
