Cal linebacker Myles Jernigan enters the transfer portal
Cal will likely look for another outside linebacker in the spring transfer portal window.
A bit of a surprise came during spring practice, as Cal outside linebacker Myles Jernigan entered the transfer portal. Jernigan will leave having earned his degree at UC Berkeley, and will look to play one more season at a new program as a grad transfer.
Jernigan had a productive four years with the Bears, logging 70 tackles, 7 tackles for loss, 3 forced fumbles, and 4.5 sacks in his final two seasons. With the ascendance of David Reese, Cal basically had its two outside linebacker spots occupied with Xavier Carlton on the other side. Jernigan had been competing for starting snaps but his playing time diminished tackles went from 50 in 2022 to 20 in 2023 (with only one tackle in the final four games).
Expect Myles Williams and Ryan McCulloch to take more of Jernigan’s snaps as the primary backups. But Cal will also likely make this one of their top priorities during the spring transfer cycle to try and find another starter who can provide pass rushing skills.
Best of luck Myles!
It’s awesome he got his degree. This move I trust will give him some great opportunities educationally and career-wise, beyond football.
Oh Oh. Hope this isn't the start of things.
