I would have placed Cal a little higher - 8th or 9th by virtue of our win over Oregon when our roster was nearly intact. We easily could have been in the 4th-6th bracket if we had pulled out the Big Game. Can't read much into the results of this season. Hopefully the win over Oregon will keep most of the recruits in the fold as we head into tomorrow's signing day, which is much more important to the program than the so-called season.

If Cal were 8th or 9th, which schools would you place below us?

* Arizona, obviously.

* Wazzu would probably be fair.

* ASU and Utah? But both *just* had wins--one an embarrassment over their archrival and the other a top-25 upset and a two-game win streak.

* OSU? Lost the last two, but beat us and also beat Oregon. They can also play the "healthy" card just like us.

I also think I started dinging schools for positive results... Not strictly because of the test result, but because schools always come back and struggle as a result of the lost practice.

Apparently I voted for Cal higher than anyone else, but my rationale was that if Cal played the teams below them on my rankings 100 times (in normal times), I think we'd win more than we'd lose. Like I know we lost to Stanford, but Cal looked like the better team even though the ball didn't bounce our way. Same with OSU. I think ASU is a tough matchup for Cal (although it'd be close), and I think Cal would be clear underdogs against Utah.

I almost went with this same rationale for my rankings this week, but there were so many cancellations and up-and-down performances from covid-affected teams that the transitive property (which ordinarily would help determine those rankings) was more unreliable than ever this year.

No one is having a bowl unless it is a New Year's six bowl. Boston College and Pitt started a wave that will continue. Imagine prepping a couple of weeks for the Armed Forces Bowl under COVID restrictions and then having the game cancelled right before kick-off because one player tested positive. No perks....no parties....no chance to see your families over the holidays. Over and out.

I wouldn't blame any schools/students for making that decision.
