Losing Uluave for the first half because of a targeting penalty will really hurt since he is our best defensive player and the D captain. I hope we are still in it going into the 2nd half when he will be eligible.
Thank you for the historic perspective on this FCS game Nick. I did not make the game so I have no comments about it. I am looking forward to the Minnesota game because that one will inform us on how good or bad we are. I remain optimistic.
I don't know if it makes you feel any better, but OSU was the much better team in that game from a down to down perspective, but blew it with some epically bad special teams + blown 2 point conversion attempts.
Yeah, it looks like Oregon State is bad again. I mean, we beat them on the road and left no doubt so that's fine, but they are probably not an impressive opponent for a P4 team to beat.
It's a little refreshing to struggle and end up with no-doubter on the scoreboard. Gives the coaches a ton to raise hell about in practice this week and the national optics of the score is Cal beat on a team it should have. That said my main areas of concern is our WR room and a fairly mediocre running game. Those limitations may begin to start showing up more greatly beginning on Saturday as our competition ramps up. Also, more mistakes than are typical of Wilcox team, mainly turnovers and bad penalties. But trusting the track record that we can clean that up.
For sure CAL started slow, but this game could have been 49 to 3, even with the slow start. JW didn't push the pedal to the metal, as is typical when CAL has a comfortable lead.
Since last year one of CFB shows on YTube I check in with cause it is pretty sarcastic is - YSIO with Uncle Lou. He follows the games live too though that it rather tedius. Watching his Week 2 summary was interesting as his take on teams blowing out lesser opponents got some chuckles out of me. His full take on it is deep into the Week 2 vid and he kinda features Minnesota among several others.
What was that? The offense was a disaster and the play calling was even worse. If that was a power conference team, they would have been blown out. If the play calling is like that next week, it will be big trouble. Minnesota can score big time! Very disappointing effort all around this week, should have been a 5 plus touchdown win.
A roller coaster as ever...I chose to take solace in SJK' s numbers, where as you say he was 31 of 35 in accuracy...now that is something to build upon. Further, while far from perfect (and as you noted look how some others did on Saturday) we were ultimately stout and took a win. Go Bears Forever, 2-0 baby!
I replied to Nam on X & I thought the same re. The controlled scheme w/o explosive plays & the 2 pt conv as practice in anticipation of playing better teams and they were clearly not in sync. Players who stood out: Crosby, Raphael, Masses again!, DeJesus again, Crosby, Ferelli & McCulloch. Next game will be telling!
Incidentally, I wonder how many fans were as annoyed as me at the damn DJ noise going on during the game. It was so loud that I couldn't hear the PA announcer telling us who carried the ball and how many yards or other pertinent info about the game. Also, when the referee was explaining the penalties an outcomes of them, etc. I couldn't hear because of the damn DJ playing the garbage noise between each down. For goodness sake just turn it off!! I watch re broadcasts of many other college games and no other college continually plays that crap. Also, it's so loud I can't even hear other fans when they attempt to talk to me.
I definitely had the feeling that Cal's opening drives were a deliberate attempt to try out some different types of throws for JKS. They were doing a lot of quick slants and timing routes where it seemed like the QB was going to throw it there no matter what, just to see if they could nail the timing. They didn't. Then in the second quarter the offense started to look better but drives got killed by turnovers and penalties. After halftime the game plan looked more like the one for Oregon State and Cal rolled.
I probably should've explained more clearly - I left Cal's 1st field goal off of the offensive ledger since the offense didn't earn it (going 3-and-out after a long punt return) for the purposes of calculating offensive efficiency.

Taggart will be unleashed the first half until Cade returns, hopefully he can hold the fort

It didn’t make me feel better to see Oregon State lose to Fresno State. Fresno State might not be too bad, but they’re hardly a powerhouse.

2-2 field goals. Not 1-1

Field goal kicking is not part of the offense?
I consider it a part of special teams
