College Football Recruiting: 2021 three-star defensive end Myles Williams commits to Cal
Cal's second defensive line commit.
The Golden Bears continue to stack up their line talent with the commitment of Myles Williams.
Cal’s 14th commitment comes from the SoCal area from Bishop Alemany High School. He joins his teammate QB Jayden Casey from the 2020 Class. He holds offers from Arizona, ASU, Boston College, Colorado, and WSU. 247Sports Composite ranks Williams as the 93rd best prospect in the state of California, and the 63rd best weakside defensive end in the nation.
He joins Akili Calhoun Jr. as the 2nd defensive end commitment in the class. Williams measures in at 6'3, 250 pounds.
His Hudl highlight tape can be found here.
Cal maintains its 4th place standing in the Pac-12 recruiting rankings, trailing Oregon and USC significantly, maintaining striking distance against Washington while holding off Arizona State.

I first went to check Myles out, peeping in a 247sports.

His highlight reel started playing, so I watched. Big kid who played inside and overpowered his smaller opponents by just leaning on them. But he didn't impress me. Granted, it's harder to assess D-lineman because so much of what they do is in footwork, handwork, shoulder work at the micro-level and not just bull-rushing over an 190-pound highschool lineman. He got past guys, but his tackling was meh. I finished and realized that it was his SOPHOMORE highlights that I was watching.
So I switched to his junior tape. http://www.hudl.com/v/2CcVya
What a difference a year makes. He's now switched outside to DE. He can have an explosive first step, but not on every snap. Thundering power steps. Nice variety of Dline moves already as a junior. Superb shedding skills, so he can be a run stopper as well as being a rush specialist. While he's not fast in pursuit, he has a strong motor to trail plays even when beaten. And then I have seen a lot of his social media posts of his offseason work that focuses on speed.
Conditioning may have been a historical problem because of his occasional slow starts off the snap. He seems to be a James Looney type, an slightly lighter DE that beats you with explosiveness/leverage/technique rather than beating you with pure speed/strength.
This dline and OLB new recruit cohort is going to be FIERCE.
Whoohoo! Go Bears! better put the right uniform on for your profile!
