The 2024 Stoney Burke Regatta: Cal Sailing Team Sails at Home
Little known Cal sailing team hosts large scale iconic regatta
This past weekend, the Berkeley sailing team worked hard to put on their annual sailing regatta, Stoney Burke, this year taking place in Marina Bay! Teams from across the country made the trip this weekend, from as close as Cal Maritime to as far as Hawaii and even Northwestern, all to race in the light, shifty conditions that graced the bay for the races.
Of the twelve schools that showed up, coming up with first place was the University of Southern California, with a convincing margin of victory, effort led by sophomore skippers Hudson Mayfield and Luke Harris, followed by the University of Hawaii in second, and then UCSB in third narrowly defeating Cal Maritime by two points. In eighth place was the hosting Bears, led by freshman Carsten Zieger and senior Nate Ingebritson.
Both days of the regatta were pristine, sunny California days, although wind was quite light throughout the weekend. On Saturday, the wind started at roughly 5 knots coming from the north, and eventually after shifting erratically became a steady 8 knot breeze from the west, allowing the fleet to end the day with some fun races, getting in six total.
Sunday, equally as beautiful of a day, had slightly more consistent wind, with a westerly that fluctuated in strength throughout the day allowing for a few more races than originally was expected.
Overall, the event was a massive success, and the event ran smoothly thanks to the hard work of the Bears team, and the flexibility of all of the sailors from across the country who showed up.
Next weekend, the Cal Sailing team is at Stanford (yuck) for Top Nine, one of their more competitive regattas of the fall season. Wish them luck as they work to make College Sailing Nationals towards the end of this spring, and see you at Stoney Burke next year!

Congratulations on your first post John!
Good to hear about a
cal team that is at least little known. Even better would be to hear about their events before they occur. Teams like rugby, gymnastics, etc.
