It’s time once again for Oski Disciple’s question of the day.

Has someone ever said to you: “don’t get me wrong” but you went ahead and got them wrong anyway?

Woo wows; free bases cost Giants the game

https://www.mccoveychronicles.com/2024/8/25/24228487/mlb-final-giants-mariners-8-25-2024-bryan-woo-robbie-ray-heliot-ramos-grant-mccray

If the 2024 San Francisco Giants and the 2024 Seattle Mariners were to play a season’s games solely against each other, both teams would end with a .500 record.

A long desert of tit-for-tat, of minuscule gains written in mutable grains of sand, stretching towards a horizon perpetually in the distance. A hellish landscape, really, that might feel a bit like this year. Progress in one area undermined by digression in another. The end of August, 132 games, played and where are they now?

Gavin Stone anchors Dodgers rotation, Mookie Betts provides sigh of relief

https://www.truebluela.com/2024/8/25/24227831/gavin-stone-mookie-betts-dodgers-rays

Moments after a huge scare in the eighth inning, Mookie Betts breathed a sigh of relief into Dodger Stadium with a tie-breaking two-run home run in the Dodgers’ 3-1 win over the Rays on Sunday afternoon in Los Angeles.

Shohei Ohtani was hit in a left forearm by a 91.8-mph fastball from Richard Lovelady, and jogged up the first base line in obvious discomfort, though Ohtani did wave off the trainer. One pitch later, Betts made sure Ohtani and everyone else could get back the third base dugout.

Good thing it wasn't 91.9, and thank goodness it wasn't 92.1 or so or it could have really done some damage.

US Open starts today here in NYC. we have gone last couple years and somehow this year is noticeably more expensive AND harder to get tickets.

we are going to go on Thu to the open day session where you dont have seats and just wander around seeing 2nd rounds matches. have not done that in years ..

I'm guessing now that Covid is less lethal, people are going out more.

perhaps. that did not seem to stop people last couple years. it has been pretty packed.

This season will mark Justin Wilcox’s eight season as head coach at Cal. He will thus tie Ray Willsey (1964-1971) for the fifth most seasons as a Golden Bear skipper trailing only Jeff Tedford who coached eleven seasons (2002-2012) and three men who were at the helm for ten years each: Andy Smith (1916-1925), Stub Allison (1935-1944) and Pappy Waldorf (1947-1956).

Not sure I wanna draw this parallel, but Willsey lost his job after Dave Maggard became AD. Maggard's first hire as football HC? Mike White.

Willsey's last year was also marked by the Isaac Curtis nonsense in which he successfully recruited Curtis then lost him because of grades. Willsey probably lost his job because of that combined with a lackluster 1971 campaign.

Willsey was, in terms of wins and losses, Mr. Mediocre. Three of his eight seasons were 5-5 and when the NCAA moved to eleven game seasons he finished with two 6-5 years. Overall he was two games under .500.

3 more years and Wilcox will really move into rarified smog.
