Meet the 2024 Paris "Calympians"
57 "Calympians" athletes will represent 24 Countries AND Cal in Paris this summer
UPDATED: Sydney Collins (Canada Women’s Soccer) was injured just before the Olympics so she cannot make her Olympic debut; however, Cal sophomore Cyprus “Calympian” Nikolas Antoniou is added, so the total count remains 57.
Cal Medal Count (as of July 29):
GOLD 1, SILVER 1, BRONZE 1
The anticipated 2024 Paris Olympic Games will open on Friday with the Opening Ceremony. Some competitions will also get underway then.
Like all of the Summer Olympics this century, the California Golden Bears will be well-represented across Paris in various events.
To stay consistent with how WFC (and CGB before we moved to Substack) had covered the previous Summer Olympics, a “Cal Olympian” AKA “Calympian” will be defined as a former Cal student-athlete in one of the 30 Cal Athletics sports OR a Cal student/alum in a non-sponsored sport. We will also include the incoming Cal students who will matriculate this fall but not those who have committed to start in 2025. Mentioned in a separate category are those “pro group” athletes who are training at Cal after competing collegiately elsewhere, even though they may be working toward a Cal degree. We will also include the alternates on the list this time, even though they may not see any action.
In other words, there may be some slight discrepancy between our list and the one used by Cal Athletics and other outlets.
Without further ado, this is our count for 2024 Paris “Calympians”:
57 Calympians representing 23 countries across 9 sports (not accounting for gender) will vie for those precious Olympic medals.
Out of this group of 57 Athletes, 2 are currently only alternates.
Not included in the count of 57 are two Class of 2025 Cal commits: USA swimmers Alex Shackell and Claire Weinstein. Also not included are the three Cal Pro Group members: swimmers Hunter Armstrong (USA), Brooks Curry (USA), and Andrea Murez (Israel).
