Classic program buidling move. If you wonder about our recruiting talent just look at Utah's recruiting every year and see how they end up. Kyle Wihttingham has built a 'program' and he turns out solid contending teams year in and year out. Wilcox is building the same thing. He just didn't have Urban Meyer to precede him and set things up. https://247sports.com/college/utah/Season/2022-Football/Commits/

How did Urban Meyer "set things up?" He was at Utah for two years over 15 years ago when Utah was a G5 school. He coached a Mountain West team with the recruiting rankings to match (bottom half of all D1 schools); mostly 2-3 star recruits. Whittingham has built that program and shepherded them from G5 school to P5 school. He has consistently done more with a lot less, ie coaching.

One more thing, a lot of Utah's recruits to this day are low three star and high 2 star prospects. Look at Whittingham's previous recruiting classes and you will find evidence of this.. Kyle does a GREAT job without having USC and Oregon quality recruits. That's what I am talking about when I talk about a PROGRAM. Kyle brings in tough, rangy and long kids and muscles them up and fields a great team.

You might want to actually click that link you provided. Going back several classes, Whittingham is signing 3-4 stars with a number of 4 star transfers coming from other schools. A cursory glance shows the only 2 stars signed over the last 4 classes were a kicker and long snapper.

Urban was only at Utah for two seasons. He won with someone else’s recruits. He’s a good coach who got the most out of 2-3 stars. Whittingham did the same when he took over and is now at a level that surpasses what Meyer did at Utah.

In the last 10 years Whittinghams best recruiting class finished at #30, and all the rest at #33 or lower with one at #48. Sure he gets a few 4*, and some 3*, and he has 2* and no stars, more in the past than recently. What I am saying is Whittingham does more with less than UW, Oregon, USC and ASU. I think Whittingham is a hell of a coach. In contrast USC has only had 3 recruiting classes out of the top ten in the same time period. I think we agree that Whittingham is a damn good coach. I think Justin Wilcox is in the same mold and CAL is actually getting better recruiting classes now than Utah. Thus I expet better results going forward. Btw, in Urban Meyers two years at Utah, he won a Liberty bowl and a New Year's day Fiesta bowl and had a record of 22-2. The Utes won a combined 17 games in the three seasons before Meyer became HC and won only 5 the year before he became HC. I would say he laid the foundation for Whittingham. Btw, one more thing; Whittingham was an assistant under Meyer and thus learned from the Master.

Urban won during his two years and set the foundation for the future. Whittingham took over as head Coach when Urban left.

We always had the school and the location. Then we built the facilities. Now we just need some sustained success to draw in just a bit more talent and who knows how high Cal can climb?
