Good get. Who is our QB going to be? So many options in the portal that I would love to see either compete with Chase or just take the job and compete with Kai.
Speed at the skill positions is not something we've had a whole lot of during Wilcox's tenure and has mitigated a lot of our potential on the offensive side of the ball, so this is a great add. Hopefully/maybe the first positive surprise this week.
Eager for news on how this cycle is shaping up. Who's in and who's not. We need bigger stronger faster, and then do a Utah and coach them up to beat the overinflated and poorly coached other teams.
Coaching up 3 stars is the reason that Kyle Whittingham is the best coach in the Pac 12 and why Jonathan Smith might replace him when Whittingham calls it quits. Hope your wish comes true next season, but not counting on it if Cal keeps the same coaching personnel.
Their Poly connection is huge. Those guys are granite blocks and seemingly born with the football gene. I played football in high school on the island of Guam. It was American military kids playing against native Guamanians who were nowhere near as big as the Samoans and Hawaiians who are now filling up the rosters at Utah and BYU. But they won more than their fair share of games against us and loved to hit you in the mouth.
I was feeling a bit down on the recruiting front. Having significant coaching stability will hopefully shore that up, whatever we think Wilcox's ceiling is.
We needed a RB and Ashton seems like a very nice addition.
His sophomore season, Hayes played in closer games - which means he had more games where he had 20-30 touches and rack up more than 200 yards. His senior season, there were more games that were more blow-outs where he had fewer carries.
He has really good acceleration and uncanny vision to see holes. I think the direct comparison is Patrick Laird - a zone-block-following back who you can put single back or put into motion for a mismatch against an ILB.
When I look at his speed, I - for once - do not doubt the claimed sub 4.5 time. He looks really fast. That's what real 4.5 speed looks - the speed where tacklers cannot fall fast enough to grab a runner's legs.
I don't really see the Laird comparison unless we're talking about his skin color. A lot of RBs run in zone blocking schemes and can also be threats to receive out of the backfield. He's much smaller, but faster.
I believe the only back with sub 4.5 speed on the Bears is Ashton Stredick (walk-on). Hopefully he'll get more touches next season. His hudl tape is incredible.
We need to flip more guys....

Welcome Ashton

Not that he was truly an option for Cal, but Spencer Rattler is going to the Gamecocks, where a firmer OU assistant is HC

Agreed...we need to get faster everywhere, so this is a good start....more of the same would be nice.
Also, let's start getting some hits from the portal, STAT...
Great news, thanks!
Welcome to Cal!
Why do I think suddenly Adrian Martinez will follow? Would be crazy.
This is good news. If this kid can run anything close to Laird, he will pile up yards for us!!
Perhaps Ott will have a change of heart as well. If so, this will be a very good RB class.
I noticed Ott got a new offer from BYU today.

You can see the list of players Cal has offered and their decision here

But, man those Utah 3*'s are f-ing beasts...

I wonder if Furd fans were comparing Hayes to CMC when they were going after him.
Patrick Laird with sub-4.5 speed? Does that make him a speed reader?

The Raiders will find him if we don't. Al Davis can draft speed from six feet under.
At the very least it makes him a reading speeder.
Love me some Patrick Laird!
This is great news, we needed a RB.
this is a great commit! very fast and will add a ton of depth at RBs
WELCOME TO CAL ASHTON!
Now we have 2 RB's named Ashton.
For some reason I associate the name Ashton with LAX bros... so we're two short of forming one on the roster.
All the Ashtons are belong to us.
