Write off the 70s as “bone dry” if you like, but that means you missed out on watching the unforgettable Gene (The Dream) Ransom and Ray (Sugar Bear) Murry, missed upsetting #11 USF on their home court, missed the 5OT win over Oregon that left thousands of Cal fans without either voices or fingernails. In other words, missed the quintessential Cal experience of exhilarating fandom despite frustratingly bad coaching.
Thanks for this ... I was a freshman in Harmon for that '86 game vs UCLA. Hundreds of us camped out the night before the game to get good seats and show our support with NBC at Harmon for the first time in forever. My favorite Cal sports day EVER - singing Louie Louie after storming the court!
It's funny what you remember as a fan. One of my greatest Haas memories was Cal's OT home win over WSU in 2005 which was the difference between making the Pac-10 Tourney and missing out. Far from a great season overall, but I treasured that senior year trip down the coast.
There’s more to college basketball than the NCAA Tournament. By making the casual fan mistake of only looking at March Madness, this article misses out on telling the stories that truly became special to hardcore Cal Basketball fans, like breaking the losing streak to Ucla or winning the Pac 12 championship. It’s a shame.
"Ah yes, the 1992-1993 Cal Basketball season. With all due respect to Pete Newell’s 1959 National Championship run, this has to be the most memorable year in Cal hoops history."
How on Earth is making to the sweet sixteen more memorable than winning the national championship? Absurd. (Unless your sole criteria is things that you personally remember in which case the Sonny Dykes era was more memorable than Cal's Wonder Teams).
The Sonny Dykes IS more memorable than Cal's Wonder Teams. Do you remember anything about Cal's wonder teams aside from Harold "Brick" Muller and beating the Mare Island Marines?
I've been reading about Smith's Wonder Team for decades so I remember one helluva lot more than just "Harold "Brick" Muller and beating the Mare Island Marines" and I'm insulted that you'd suggest otherwise. Also, perhaps we need to define our terms: memorable - "worth remembering or easily remembered, especially because of being special or unusual." But if you think, by that definition that the Dykes era is more memorable than teams that went unbeaten for five years and won four national titles, go ahead. I'll just remember not to enter into a discussion about Cal football history with you.
You didn't read the definition did you? You don't understand memory. You don't know me. You don't know not to use all caps.
Let me try to help you, who do you remember more about, Abraham Lincoln or your kindergarten teacher? (Actually that was silly of me, you're probably still in kindergarten.) Now leave me the fuck alone with your silliness.

Quintessential indeed.

Always exciting to see fellow 925ers in the wild! Now I have a new site to follow!
Yes!
Thanks for the overview.

This Harmon crowd is insane. Much tougher place to play for Reggie Miller than his trips to MSG: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lzVvjP2qmtM&feature=youtu.be

Kids today.
YOU HAD TO READ ABOUT IT, YOU LITERALLY DO NOT REMEMBER IT.

Guess the vow to be less irritable didn't last very long.
No thanks to you.
Great knowledge!
Thanks!
