Alma Elsnitz Reportedly Commits to Cal Women's Basketball
Sweden international would be a recruiting coup for first-year head coach Charmin Smith
Alma Elsnitz, a five-foot-ten guard from Sweden, has committed to Cal, according to a tweet from Passion Hoops International, an international-focused scouting firm, posted Wednesday. The Sweden international would represent a major recruiting coup for Charmin Smith, the first-year Golden Bears women's basketball head coach.
Elsnitz, 18, is a member of her hometown basketball club RIG Lulea, a coastal city in the northernmost county of Sweden 561 miles north of Stockholm. She recently competed in the 2019 FIBA Under-18 Women's European Championship in Skopje, North Macedonia, averaging 8.3 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game in the tournament. Sweden came in fourth after a 57-65 loss to Turkey on July 14, 2019, a match in which she played only 13 minutes.
2020, meaning she'll be on campus this fall (if any of us are)?? Coach Smith is off to an amazing start in terms of recruiting. I wouldn't have expected that recruiting would have taken such a jump; I would have thought that if she was such a great recruiter then we would have seen these type of classes in recent years with her working under Coach Gottlieb. Coach G had the advantage of previous tourney success and Coach S had the disadvantage of being a new head coach. Of course, I know little about WBB, but maybe will have to learn more...
Well done, Charmin. Nice to get some positive sports news in these dreary times. Go Bears!
