The bigger advantage is home field advantage and then playing at a neutral site against the top 4.
I am not shocked at all that the 5-8 seeds all won the first round games due to home field and the second round games due to it being on a neutral site.

ND has a double digit win. All 4 teams with a bye fell behind by double digits and ultimately lost.
Two of those teams with, Boise and SMU were severely outclassed in talent. There has to be a better way to pick the "best" teams.
