Knowlton is the problem...

How could I forget! Ha....but I’d argue this was worse...your opener in year 3 - yikes...UCSD is still making the transition to D1 and has never beaten a P10/P12 team before.

So, stadiums all over the country have been packed and many in states w/ low vaccination rates. And yet Cal is the only P5 team to have been hit with an outbreak? Someone will be the guinea pig on this and unfortunately it will be Wilcox. Although at this point he may be happy to get the buyout to get the fuck out of Berkeley. I hope this doesn't happen cuz Wilcox was getting there. Prior to this shit show, Cal had one of the best offenses in the conference. I challenge anyone to name a better offense mid-season? The defense was flourishing. Knowlton should already be fired, what a chicken shit of a person he is.

This totally sucks. This outbreak and the nums associated with it are defying all statistics. Something is rotten in Berkeley.

Wilner is saying Lake is out as HC of the puppies and that Wilcox will be offered the job. He should take it if offered. Then, at some point, Cal fans will realize how fucked we really are.

Expand full comment
PawlOski's avatar

Of course he would take it. It would mean a raise, a chance to start fresh, and an admin and University that would support him. But he’d need to win and win fast there. Hevwill for sure be a candidate, but I doubt (hope) it’s not preordained. Even though his tenure has been a little underwhelming, you’re right that it would sink us further. What AZ is trying to pull out of is a good comp for what we could experience. Until Knowlton is replaced by another AD with greater vision, we’ll be lucky to just tread water.

Why would they get a coach with a losing record?

Expand full comment
Go Eat A Taco's avatar

I wouldn't worry about that if I were you. As a Cal ?fan? you should worry / consider the mass exodus of players should Wilcox be fired or leave. The players like Wilcox and they want to play for him. A lot of players will transfer (heck some may due to this past week alone, and who could blame them) especially on defense. A defense that is rated #3 in the conference despite starting a bunch of freshman and underclassmen. A defense that will welcome injured players back ~ BJ & Deng ~ that will make it a top defense in the conference (already there). Offense is top 5 and getting better!!

I get it, your narrative is that the coaches can't coach. Got it. But the metrics mid-way through the season don't support your opinion. And I take it that even you can understand / appreciate the outlier the AZ game was, right?

You and the other blokes here wanna see a dumpster fire for the next 5 years? You'll get your wish plus some if Wilcox is gone.

Expand full comment
Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Respectfully, I hear what you’re saying, GEAT....but how much of an “outlier” game was Arizona really, considering the same thing happened pretty much all of last year?

When you’re the runaway winner for “Power 5 program MOST affected by a global pandemic” for the second straight season, something is clearly rotten in Denmark, so to speak, no?

Win/loss is a metric, so he is correct. That doesn’t mean he is being critical or doesn’t want Wilcox. It is a fact, he has a losing overall and Pac 12 record.

Wilner isn’t reporting, he is assuming and projecting. This all assumption on his part at this point.

Go Eat A Taco's avatar

Ergo I used the word "saying" and not "reporting". Frankly he's adding fuel to the fire so that he gets more hits.

Expand full comment

Yep, Wilner has continued to be wrong about Cal. Throughout his career he has shown an anti Cal and pro Stanford bias. His reporting through this whole Covid outbreak has mostly been wrong.

While this shit show will certainly cost us long-term on many levels, postponing it is probably in our best interest for this game only given that we'd be so limited in practice this week.

This situation is a mess. Neither CoB HS or CAL HS are responding to questions by the players or the press. But from what I am reading the whole thing is highly suspect and now that it has unfolded into a scandal the ranks are closing. One reporter asked if it was true that in the Bay Area with such a low rate of Covid, with a 99% vaccination rate for the team, that so many players actually had Covid. If so then then he said the public had a right to know. Something really got messed up here and the powers behind it are trying to hide from truth. It will come out. Here is the article: https://www.si.com/college/cal/news/cal-players-speak-out

KetamineCal's avatar

How does a 99% vaccinated population in the friggin' low-virus Bay Area end up with so many positives? This does not make sense, even with delta. It would be hard to see this attack rate if someone actively pumped SARS-CoV-2 into an unventilated room.

At least I don't have to convince my wife again to let me attend this weekend, though I don't think "coronavirus outbreak" will be a great selling point for me to attend the Big Game. Low attendance should help with social distancing, though.

It's been reported that all of the athletes who were out tested positive for Covid, not contact tracing: https://writeforcalifornia.com/p/cal-football-covid-19-outbreak-2021

To me, something really doesn't add up. 99.5% vaccination rate and 30+ Covid positives? Am I missing something, or is it a strangely huge number of breakthrough cases?

I've been singing this loudly of late, but think recruiting Tedford for the AD job could help fix a lot of our issues quickly. He understands our worts and the challenges of Berkeley, he'd be an advocate for coaches and players, he'd have good eye for coaching talent, and just by being here he'd jumpstart giving again. He's probably coached his last game because of his health and I still think he has feels for this place and his legacy here.

This is unbelievable. How is this game cancelled but we were able to play against Arizona? What a cluster f*** of a season. Just when I thought it couldn’t get more disappointing, it does. At this point I might just be done with Cal football all together.

Did they retest the whole team again and have another 30 cases of Covid.

Why is it unbelievable that this game is cancelled after playing Arizona?

Per a tweet from ESPN's Bonagura, we have more positives after the initial cohort of players.

Expand full comment
Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

So, Leland, this means some of those players that were negative & then made the trip to Tucson and played have now tested positive? So they played after exposure but before it had sunk in, so to speak?

Expand full comment
GoldenSD81's avatar

Exactly! This is why it is so surprising. So kids that were negative as of Saturday are now positive and the kids they were positive last week still aren’t cleared to play this week.

So that means we don't have enough players to compete. I'm glad they are rescheduling instead of forfeiting.

I could be wrong but NCAA said no delays. However, the PAC12 may have a clause allowing for a postponement, if the team can show they did everything to avoid it. Pretty much impossible to prove, IMO.
