One important thing that is different now compared to the time Wilcox was hired ( with no head coaching experience) is that RR can mentor him and help him become an excellent head coach. Lest us not forget that RR was on the defensive side of the ball, won a SB ring and was two-time NFL coach of the year (and dearly loves Cal). If Tosh has a brain he'll see the huge upside for embracing RR as his mentor, not only for his own development but for the success of Cal as well. Having RR is a huge part of how this can be a smashing success.

Hurry up and sign him! This waiting is making me nervous.

mrjpark's avatar

Everyone is saying it's all done. I'm assuming the UC system is forcing Cal to leave the position open for 30 days to ensure we're holding an honest interview process?

Fire Starkey's avatar

Ok, step 1 is (almost) complete. Tosh will bring energy, a significantly improved culture and serious recruiting chops back to the mix.

Step 2, lets see what the coaching staff looks like. It was rumored that significant money was being lined up to pay for a significantly upgraded assistant coaching staff. Lets see if that is true AND lets see what the new staff looks like

Step 3 retain JKS. Duh. Rumors sound good on that front

Step 4 also rumors of significantly enhanced money for NIL purposes. Yes, we are going to max out on what the university can pay the players directly (approx $14-15M of the $20.5M total). But many/most P4 schools will do that. To really compete, we need the "legit" NIL deals with boosters paying players to do advertising/give them no show jobs/give them free car leases etc. Lets see if any of that comes to fruition

Step 5 ???

Step 6 Profit

Step 7, retain Olympic sports and pay off Memorial upgrades.

Step 8. Keep squeezing UCLA!

Step 9. Move into Big Ten.

Step 10. Have Aaron Rodgers say Cal is his alma mater.

Sounds like a good plan. Should be completed in about 10 years.

Are you keeping score?

I ask because this is supposed to be a time in which Cal fans are unifying around the new head coach. Presumably, that's Tosh Lupoi. All that ish should be in the past, right?

Blondiesandtopdog's avatar

I’m still there but have resigned to the inevitability

This not-quite-an-official-announcement seems like just stop gap ahead of NSD. 🫤

I keep seeing folks saying Tosh has the "best" chance of keeping JKS. I don't see how that follows. If I were JKS, I would be concerned that another defensive-minded coach is coming in. What if he decided on keeping Rolo or Harsin? Would that be a plus or a minus in JKS's mind? We need a psychic to answer these questions for us.

Deflated Oski's avatar

Joaquin posted that Rolo is likely staying on staff. Whether it’s OC/QC/QB coach, that is probably a plus in retaining JKS who seemingly has a good relationship with Rolo.

veritek's avatar

Heard from someone connected to the donor community that Rolo is staying on staff as [de facto] QB coach, which should help in keeping JKS

AndDriveDriveDrive's avatar

Rolo seems pretty loyal to us too. He saw his career disappear and has been given a new beginning here.

mrjpark's avatar

He's also a Bay Area man that gets to coach from home. I wouldn't mind him turning into our Hawaiian QB whisperer.

Peetyjay's avatar

Because he know how to recruit talent and was undoubtedly a key part of bringing JKS to Oregon on the first place.

Man, I miss the old CGB (not that WFC isn't great also!)

heyalumnigo's avatar

Just need to have WFC add in gifs. Then we can have the sunshine pumping one! While we're asking for enhancements, how about @oracle gif?

I unsuccessfully looked for the "Hitler finds out Tosh Lupoi is leaving Cal" or "Hitler reacts to Tosh Lupoi going to Washington", Downfall parady video. Someone posted it during the "Tosh to Washington" mess probably on californiagoldenblogs.com. In my biased but striving for objectivity opinion, it's the best Downfall parady. Anyone have a copy?

Nice that we can laugh about this all these years later. Those gifs were cathartic salve for our wounded Golden Bear souls.

Tosh has the best chance to keep JKS. I’m sure he helped flip him from Cal to Oregon last year, which is where he’d be right now if they hadn’t already decided Moore was their starter. Hope he stays. But either way, this is a great hire.

KetamineCal's avatar

I considered that, but am not sure Tosh would have recruited anyone on offense. But, yes, Tosh is an excellent recruiter and could even bring someone from Lanning's staff who did participate directly.

Justbear's avatar

I think Tosh recruits all the high profile players including offense.

BTown85's avatar

I think Tosh only recruits players who do social media, play video games or breath oxygen……..

Something about this just doesn't sound and feel right. All I keep hearing is a bunch of cheerleading. This what I think of Rolovich

“The ability to help the people around me self-actualize their goals underlines the single aspect of my abilities and the label that I value most — teacher.” Bill Walsh

Blondiesandtopdog's avatar

Sigh. But like I said if this is what Ron thinks is best, then I support.

It’s just that the no Tosh people like me will not be giving him much benefit of the doubt at least in the short to medium term.
