Was our coaching staff this big before? It seems massive...

This seems like a big group by even large program standards. I suspect a lot of the lower-ranked coaches are here to both buff their resume and then help build networks and pipelines to Cal. This doesn't mean that they're beholden to Cal. Just that the pipeline is good for recruiting, good for their business, and good for their clients.

That's 26 coaches listed in the post! Gotta wonder what the total cost of coaching salaries and benefits is. Plus all the extra airline tickets, hotel rooms, etc. Save some money for the players!

Not sure when the NCAA limits no longer applied, though it seems like it may have been part and parcel to the NIL era.

We've gone from an NCAA-mandated limit of 9 coaches in addition to the HC to an apparently unlimited number of coaches. I counted 25 coaches under Tosh Lupoi on this staff, as cited in the article above.

It's "Washington University in St. Louis" or, simply, "WashU".

Fun fact: also "Bears" (though not "Golden"...but often referred to as "fighting")

Unlike I, the sturdy Golden Bear! :-)

Tosh has recruited a solid coaching staff and has gone all out on portal and high school recruiting efforts. I don’t think we could ask for more but, as always, the proof will be in the ability of this mostly new coaching staff to meld together a winning program from all these new pieces that have been brought together. Time will tell but it at least feels like a new direction with huge potential.

The long awaited ILB coach announcement, and he's already here! Hard to argue with his experience in multiple roles, especially on a staff that's a bit thin on it. He's been a part of some incredible teams. It's nice having a grizzled, respected sage around from the good ol' days.

No idea how good his recruiting acumen is these days. As a named positional coach, I am guessing he will be recruiting?

I would imagine that our Edge coach Barraza would cover both OLB and DE positions.

There’s no limit on how many coaches you can have, but you are limited to 10 assistants plus the head coach who can make recruiting visits. If you’re not grooving on the recruiting, you could have been squeezed out of a staff in the past, but now you can focus on just coaching and not having to be a glad-handing road warrior.

I'm not sure what the convention is. Are "coaches" considered recruiters while "analysts" and assistants aren't? Or is there just some list of names a program files with NCAA?

We could identify some based on who recruits interact with, though a lot are just posting photos with Tosh.

How would like your ILBCoach done Ak_a_bear, rare, medium rare or medium?

"Well done and grizzled"

And perfectly Golden!

Brings up the average age of the staff a tick or two. Like me, a bit of a job hopper. Has coached a lot of tremendous players. Would like to hear from some of them. Welcome back to Berkeley, Coach Gregory!

Well he came back last year so I'm not sure if we'll hear "welcome back" from his former players

Good point. I guess it was his rehire by the new coach that needed to happen. I’ve never reported to someone whom I used to supervise, but I have waited on one.
