Because of all the angst regarding the 'probable' conclusion of the season, I'd like to reiterate that if all the Cal verbal commits follow through with signing next week, Cal will have brought in a consensus Top 25 recruiting class. The last four seasons they ranked, 39th, 42nd, 43rd, and 70th.
yup, this is THE most important aspect of this season ~ keeping this class intact. Lots of talent on the DL & WR coming in. A QB that appears to have some potential and for sure some Dibsy Do 2, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YcDmxycYsfM
Not much help on the OL and one of them has already decommitted and decided to go play for Princeton.
I am not buying the sentiments that this was a throwaway season. What I saw was that Cal got leapfrogged by a bunch of programs, namely UCLA and Oregon State, that did not struggle as much with COVID problems and may have taken this shortened season a lot more seriously. If pressed, I would put Cal in the number 11 slot behind Arizona to start next season.
That's a bad look for a head coach entering his fifth season and still struggling to find an offense that can compete in the Pac 12. It will get worse if the two best defenders on the team - Deng and Goode - opt for the NFL. I might feel differently tomorrow, but I am just pissed that yet another Cal player tested positive two hours before gametime. Was it an accident, did this player pick up COVID walking down the street or stopping in Safeway to pick up a deli sandwich? I don't think so...
I'm soooooo very tired of all the negativity. The Oregon State game was a fluke, if that game gets played 10 times, Cal wins 8. Ditto for the big game. If Cal would have had the opportunity for more games they would have regressed to the mean.
As for implying a player intentional got Covid for some unstated reason. That is just stupid and insulting.
The Oregon State game was not a fluke. They beat Cal last year and did it again this year with smart calls on offense and good special teams. It is ridiculous to suggest that Cal would beat them 8 times out of 10 under normal circumstances. More like 3 out of 10. Their running game and offense in general is far superior to Cal's. And I am not saying that Cal player got COVID intentionally. I am suggesting he wasn't careful. Big difference, but you jumped to conclusions.
The Oregon State was most definitely a fluke. Last year's game has no impact on this year's game. Cal outgained the Beavers 439 to 360, converted their 3rd downs at a higher percentage (50% to 30%), and were at 1st and goal but a batted ball went to the one place on the field with Beavers and no Bears. Thus, if the game is replayed 10 times, Cal will win 8.
As for not implying players intentionally picked up Covid, then don't ask whether or not it was an accident, and then conclude you don't think so. If something is not an accident, then you are implying it is intentional.
Like others have said what a fitting end to this season (not that the d line got covid, but that the d line was the culprit like in the beginning), but the thing that has me confused is the environment that the d line is near and around. Like I assume the team is in a light bubble with the strict testing and protocols, but it seems like the d line is way more in contact than the offense with one another. I know I'm overthinking this but like everytime they have had a test it knocks the whole group unlike the offensive line test from a few weeks ago, do they live in more enclosed spaces or near frat row? I know we really should not have played this season out anyway but now that it was here I wanted all the games to be played but it just seems odd the d line and o line testing logistics are paralleled to one another. Here's to a better '21 season.
With transfers and season ending injuries the DL was very thin. So 1 or 2 players testing positive along w/ contact tracing and that's it, not enough bodies for the DL.
I was in the process of preparing food for the game upon hearing the news. If the news came any later, I would've been eating it, and possibly could've choked.
I hope/trust that the NCAA will allow seniors (and all players actually) another year of eligibility. Some like Cam Bynum may elect to leave to play on Sundays. But I was looking forward to seeing what Chase Garbers could do in a normal and healthy season.
They do. This year doesnt count for eligibility for anyone. The question for a lot of them is whether they are forced to graduate or can somehow prolong their undergraduate. Id expect some of them to even grad transfer.
Well, this season sucked, but I still massively appreciated it. We were brimming with hope at the beginning, but we never had close to a team at full strength, but I was in desperate need of entertainment, and the effort was never in question.
Oh well = My reaction after coming back from local hiking trip with fairly keen anticipation for the game then seeing the announcement a few mins ago. No stress, no indignation.

History has shown that Cal can’t beat OSU 8 out of 10. Tedford, even during the good Tedford years couldn’t beat OSU 8 out of 10.

Yeah but you left out turnover margin, red zone efficiency, and special teams; which are all part of the games and we lost those.
Special teams play wasn’t a fluke, so no reason to believe it would improve in those other 9 games.

I have the Cal v Oregun game on DVR so I'll watch that again and submit my grades / comments later today!!
I watched Cal-USC 2018 on youtube yesterday. I should have saved it for today.
So a majority of the DL contracted COVID 2x??
There was only one covid in DL for the first game, and then one today. Could be two different players, or one player 2x, but not majority 2x
So what did FS1 show instead of our game? replay?
The game was supposed to be on Fox here in San Diego. Instead I just got infomercials.
This is like watching the game on a stream that is infinitely lagging
When they cancel the game, do they also cancel airing the You See (UC) a Place commercial?
Do we still get to rate the game? D gets 100. Gave up 0 yards. O gets 0. It gained 0 yards. I hate ties but oh well. At least we beat the Ducks.
My football withdrawal symptoms are kicking into high gear. Doesn't help that we got such short notice.
I was in the process of preparing food for the game upon hearing the news. If the news came any later, I would've been eating it, and possibly could've choked.
Why cant they just play the game remotely like on Zoom or something?

Never place any hope/trust in a terrible organization like the NCAA.

This season does not count towards against football player's eligibility.
Does this apply to playas that played? https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.latimes.com/sports/highschool/story/2020-12-08/junior-college-option-high-school-football-players-not-recruited-covid-19-pandemic%3F_amp%3Dtrue
Yes. It applies to everyone.
Except Cal players...they’re the only ones. They lose a year.
This is the way.

Thanks to players and coaches and their support staff for giving it a try. They all deserve better.
Moment of the year? Deng’s Forced fumble. All the players deserve another year of eligibility.
