Every night on the schedule looks impossible when you play like this.

I haven't looked ahead at the schedule. Is there a potential win out there anywhere?

Santa Clara and UT Arlington are next.

Oregon State is the closest to them on Ken Pomeroy's conference rankings, but they just gave USC a run for their money.

Beavers show what a good coach can actually do. They were awful last year after that magical, Ethan Thompson led run in March Madness…Tinkle tore it down, retooled over the off-season, and voila - competent basketball. They may not dance, but they’re not unwatchable.

Honest question: will Cal get a mention as a Bubble team on CBS anytime in the next 10 years?

Yes. Basketball is (relatively) easy to turn around.

UT Arlington is probably the best (last) chance…the Bears may jump up and stun an Oregon St at home, kinda like Colorado beat us, but it’s unlikely.

You really gotta hand it to Mark Fox, man…he has NO answers. He’s a beaten man and is just stealing money from the University at this point. He was an unimaginative selection, and remains even more so now. I must say I’m somewhat shocked that they are 0-11…just by law of averages they should’ve won a game or two. It really takes a special level of incompetence all across the board to do what Cal is doing…recruiting, coaching, adjustments…just a complete and total failure…it’s a sight to see.

WHERE TF ARE THE ALUMNI PLAYERS? Other than Randle and a message from Lamond, crickets…

To be fair, currently calling attention to any connection with Cal MBB right now isn't something that anyone would consider as good for their career arc.

Definitely hard to watch and a real head scratcher.

“We’re all disappointed with the results so far this season”.

Just “this” season?

Expand full comment

“I can assure you that nobody is more frustrated than Coach Fox and myself.” Yeah but I bet getting paid a million bucks a year to be incompetent blunts that frustration, Jim.

Expand full comment

So, if Knowlton still has Fox on board, I find it very difficult to believe that no one is more frustrated with these results than he is. As for Fox, man, are you still here?

Yeah Jim can take action if he wants to. Fox on the other hand, can try really hard but he's just incapable to accomplish anything.

Fox and Knowlton should pull a Shaw and "voluntarily" retire. Neither of them will cuz this is the last job either of them will ever be paid this type of money. At best, Fox will be working in a concession both in the Chase Center while Knowlton will be checking tickets at the door.

Two worthless jabronis fleecing Cal.

I've written to Knowlton several times over the past 3 years sharing my above statements. If I respect anyone any less than Knowlton, I can't think of whom it could be.

No way we will be able to recruit better players until there is a change in coaching. I suspect another coach can also do more with the current roster too. Aside from a few pick and rolls, yesterday we mostly just passed on the perimeter and shot 3s. The amount of lost ticket revenue this year is staggering. Although it traces back to Wyking, Fox has proven not to be the right guy to fix the program. Fox was put in a difficult spot, but has had time to put his Mark on the program. The current situation is record book historic in the worst way in all of college basketball major conferences. How can we ever recruit into this program now? If Knowltons goal is to do away with competitive athletics at cal, he is succeeding. There is no other explanation for such incompetence.

Put this season in football terms. 2017 Cleveland Browns?

Or, Cal football terms.. Dykes year 1?

How about newbie Tampa Bay Bucs, 0-26? Yes, that was more than one year, but then we get Fox back for next year, so there's a chance of multi-year O-fer.

Wilcox year 6 or more likely and appropriate is Holmoe 2001.

Good luck getting rid of Knowlton — they signed him to an extension last year through 2029. I guess the great state of the athletic department was too much to avoid throwing millions more at that buffoon. SMH
