Cal golf alum Max Homa wins the Farmers Insurance Open

Max Homa just can’t stop winning in California. Homa closed strong in the final round of the Farmers Insurance Open to grab his sixth PGA tournament victory, and his fourth win in California on tour.

Trailing in the second group going into the final round, Homa put up four birdies on the front nine to move within striking distance of the lead. Two birdies on the par-3s no the back nine at Torrey Pines gave him the lead for good, with a birdie on the par-5 18 cinching victory.

Homa has also won the Fortinet Championship twice the last two years at the Silverado Country Club at Napa, and won the Genesis Invitational at Riviera in Los Angeles in 2021.

Homa now moves into second place in the still very early 2023 FedEx Cup standings, trailing only Jon Rahm.

Collin Morikawa also finished third at -10. It’s Morikawa’s second top-three finish in his two 2023 appearances. Two Cal Bears in the top three, how about that?

With his 6th PGA win, Homa is now in sole possession of 1st place amongst Cal alum on PGA wins. I am not sure I would have believed this a year ago, but Morikawa has hit a championship dry spell (including two events where he blew 5 stroke leads going into the final round).

One's got to believe that Collin Morikawa will figure things out and get back to his winning ways. Max Homa also needs to be more competitive at a Major at some point. But before all that, the PGA tour will stay on the West Coast, where they should both be contenders (they should both be playing at the event in Pacific Palisades in three weeks).
