It seems like are getting ok recruits at the HS level who make an impact as frosh but don't improve after that. Hearns for example was the Chronicle Bay Area player of the year as a senior. Earby also made an impact as a frosh. Why are guys not improving? Lack of coaching up? Hence we have to keep dipping into the portal to get other 3 star guys who were coached up.
Hearns has certainly regressed since his really promising freshman season. But agreeing with concernedparent that he's pretty limited physically/athletically. Despite his HS accomplishments, I don't believe he was highly coveted coming out of De La Salle.
Will he have to do a year in residence? I don't see anyone describing this as a grad transfer. I know the NCAA double transfer rule is in limbo right now but I don't think he'd be covered by the current "jubilee."
I'm no analyst, so take this for a lay person's opinion only. But it seems to me like we often ran a really soft zone where, even though we had many people dropping back, they were standing with a lot of space between them and the offensive players. As if they were coached to not worry about the offensive players and just stand in a general pattern. Every capable QB has been able to throw between defenders for big gains.
I think our lack of a pass rush put our backs on islands and forced us into softer coverage. Injuries hurt us on the pass rush front, but maybe we just need a new S&C coach. Our injury problems seem consistently worse than other teams and we don't have the depth for it.
I wonder if OOC games make it more
likely for someone to transfer. First Chandler Rogers from UNT, now Harris from Idaho.
Good pickup but will be wasted if we don’t get a new DB coach and DC.

Hearns plays tough and is good at contesting the catch but is athletically limited. Earby's lack of development is very disappointing.
Great pick up

Yes.
Secondary needs an infusion of talent.
What I don't understand is that we went into this year optimistic about the secondary. The unit as a whole underperformed.
Lack of pass rush makes the secondary look worse but the sheer amount of blown coverages and big plays given up is very unlike a Wilcox defense.
