UCLA is bad. Just finished dinner and turned on the tv. Punting from near their own end zone the punter kicked it straight into the chest of a rushing lineman. Only gave up a fg as a result as time in the half was running out.

Jadyn Ott.

SMDH.

Torched his legacy at Cal, pissing away status as a program legend, as well as his NFL future, to go be RB5 in Norman OK.

Makes me sad.

He got some really bad advice. He would have been better off going pro and being a late round pick.

Expand full comment
GoldenSD81's avatar

I hope he got a big bag. While no offensive player has ever been drafted under Wilcox, I’m sure Ott would have gotten a lot more playing time at Cal and might have been selected in rounds 5-7 in NFL draft if he put up a 1,000 yard rushing and 200 yards receiving season while at Cal

Gotta wonder what the real story w Ott is? Can he get an extra year of eligibility?

Expand full comment
Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Maybe?!?! He’s played 5 games this year and has graduated, so by the old rules, no.

He’s been banged up every year, tho, so it’s likely somewhat injury related. And right now he’s likely an UDFA at best for the NFL.

But he’s the 4th string RB at Oklahoma, while he’d be RB1 at Cal. Jonathan Brady is WR5 at Indiana, and he’d be WR1 at Cal.

That pretty much sums up the talent disparity for Cal’s offense in the Wilcox era, unfortunately.

If we had Ott and Brady this season, we likely win 1 and maybe 2 more games with them

Hindsight is 20/20 but if players knew JKS was gonna be this good I’m sure a bunch of them would have made different decisions.

Expand full comment
Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Endries move made sense for him but he’s doing next to nothing in Austin.

As is Ott.

As is Brady.

And Jet Thomas arguably made the biggest bonehead decision of them all, portaling immediately after being handed the RB1 job.

Yeah, so all these talent transfered despite Wilcox being our HC

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

I think so too.

This was as close to a legit sure-fire 10-win schedule as a team can have. Be nice to get to 8 at least.

Expand full comment
GoldenSD81's avatar

This was perhaps the easiest schedule I have ever seen Cal given in my 25 years following Cal and Wilcox will limp dick into 7 wins and should be fired.

Dykes with JKS wins 9 games easily.

Tedford with JKS wins 11 games easily.

Even Holmoe with JKS wins 6 games.

Wilcox should absolutely be fired for only winning 7 games

Do you think JKS transferred from Oregon to Cal because he hoped Wilcox would be replaced after a year? Why do you think JKS said "Coach Wilcox Is the man" in a recent interview?

Expand full comment
Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Let’s see if he’s a Cal Bear when Fall semester starts. He’s saying all the right things, but……we’ve heard this before.

He largely transferred to Cal because he could start.

Now he can start literally anywhere in the country.

So we’ll see. It’s good that he and the team likes Wilcox. Most people do. But just being a good guy does not win football games.

Louisville was embarrassing in their L to Clemson last night, so tough to gauge how good that W actually is.

But keeping JKS is imperative and would be massive.

Imagine the doomsday scenario if we decide to keep Wilcox because we believe it will help keep JKS and then JKs decides to leave and we are stuck with Wilcox as our HC and no JKS

Expand full comment
Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Which of course remains the most likely scenario, unfortunately.

RR and Lyons can say whatever they want about changing things with Cal Football, but really the ONLY thing that matters, IMO, is holding onto JKS. That’s it. I really don’t think it’s Fire Wilcox and you lose JKS, just like it’s not keep JW and you keep JKS.

If Cal wants to be taken at all seriously as a program with realignment looming, you keep JKS. That’s instant credibility. Even if you have to elevate Rolo to OC or even HC…

History of course says they don’t, but RR is working at it.

Wilcox isn’t gonna stay without an extension and an extension would be indefensible so he’s gone.

I think Wilcox would stay.

No one is lining up to hire him as a HC. He has no leverage at all. He can stay and finish his contract or walk away and maybe be a DC but more than likely a position coach somewhere else

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

The concern is then he’s a lame duck HC and that impacts recruiting.

Solid slate of games today. That Wisconsin at Indiana matchup should be intresting with both teams having somthing to prove. The South Carolina vs Texas A&M game could get realy chippy given the recent history. Enjoying having a bye week to actualy watch some other confrence games without the stress.

Mendoza final stat line: 22-24, 299 yards, 4TDs

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Even giving Wilcox a pass for making him QB3 behind a WR and a below average career backup, JW still then made a future Heisman Trophy winner have to beat out some kid named Chandler Rogers.

Now folks are saying they want Wilcox back because the team likes him and they beat a massively overrated Louisville team.

We’re headed for games on CW in a conference with Oregon State and Wazzu. Fun times.

I mean, even Goff split some reps with Zach Kline his first year.

Expand full comment
Justbear's avatar

I don't think Goff split many reps with Kline. They were similar types. Kline may have played when Goff was terrible (Oregon) or when Goff had to come out, but I don't remember them splitting reps in games.

Now Rubenzer played alot more snaps in games

Expand full comment
GoldenSD81's avatar

Yeah, Kline only came in when Goff was injured or the Oregon rain blowout game. Rubenzer played a lot more snaps but that was more as a wildcat formation and power running packages

Expand full comment
Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Sure, as a change of pace maybe, but Goff was always the starter. And, hence the pass for Mendoza’s first year with Wilcox. And bringing Rogers in for a change of pace was a fine idea in spot areas near the goal line for a series of plays last year.

Not being the unquestioned starter going into last season did big damage to the relationship between Mendoza and Cal.

Expand full comment
GoldenSD81's avatar

Yeah, Wilcox completely mismanaged Mendoza and kept trying to replace him. Remember when Wilcox would rotate QBs in games and pull Mendoza for a couple of series or plays?

He did the same thing with Garbers, kept trying to replace Garbers and rotated Garbers in and out for a series or two
