Thanks BP.

An encouraging opening tilt, especially on the defensive end. Madsen's first 2 teams at Cal have struggled to defend at a competent level, which has made it quite difficult for him to consistently beat P4 rosters.

If they are going to show any progress in year 3, they need to defend at a much higher level. Last night looked so much more promising, especially at the G position.

I just wanted to add that our new white jerseys are basic af but kinda go hard. I like them.

Ruff out all year? That is a big blow.

Yep. And in this laughable transfer portal era, the chances of him ever suiting up for Cal likely take a hit, unfortunately.

I would be worried about that as well. Although I guess going forward the cash dynamics are a bit different as all the Power 4/5 schools can spend up to $20 million to compensate athletes The formula you see being reported is up to 70- 75% for FB, up to 15-20% for Mens BB; 5% for Womens BB and the 5% for other sports. Each school can decide their own allocation. And no doubt some schools will find ways to top this up, but Cal BB should at least have more support than in the recent past..

How the House Settlement dynamics play out will definitely be something to watch. With the collectives basically closing shop, last year was a total mess from a market-standpoint with guys getting massively overpaid based on previous years.

If we’re still looking at something like that, Cal’s in trouble because it’s been well reported that MBB does not have a competitive donor base given the incompetence superfecta of Mike Williams/Jim Knowlton/Wyking Jones/Mark Fox.

If the new model is in fact in place and serves to level the playing field a bit, so to speak, Cal may be able to be more competitive financially with similar programs. We still face the massive practice facility disadvantage, which is a major source of negative recruiting. And the program needs a GM stat.

Not at all. We will still probably struggle a bit in ACC play but I think this team will be fun to watch and help us keep kids.

That would certainly be nice.

But recent history shows that is simply not the case. The MBB program currently does not have the funds to retain players.

Starts with hope. Gotta coach well and win the games we can win, show donors that money will bring better results.

We're getting kids drafted and sought after by more successful programs with more money. Now we have guards transferring from p4 programs, and if Madsen keeps getting on base and developing everyone who touches his program...I think we can hope.

Sure, we can absolutely hope. And honestly, yesterday’s game was a real solid performance, regardless of opponent, with improved defense and offensive efficiency. 20 assists is nice, and still room for improvement with the shooting.

All MM can do is win as many games as he can. That’s where it has to start, with W’s. But so long as you have the portal rules that are currently in place, the nature of the beast is most programs are basically starting over every year.

But a promising start last night on a lot of levels.

My favorite part of last night is Lee Dort improving every year, and now looking like a viable big.

Glad the Bears looked so good. What are thoughts on how much of this decisive win is down to the lower tier schools now being decimated every year by the portal?

CSUB is a mess right now, just changed coaches in September. Still this result is encouraging in that we did not dominate this type of opposition that last 2 years. We would win by 10 or so, but the outcome was I doubt until the last 6 minutes we of the game.

This was a complete game...let's hope it continues.

Based on what I saw....Cal basketball is back in a big way. Probably our best team since the Mike Montgomery era.

It's hard to top Cuonzo's 2016 team. It'll be the most fun team to watch since that year, I think.

Alright let’s take it easy😂. That team had 4 NBA players and was undefeated at home. Love the Dai Dai Pippen back court though such a breath of fresh air. Hopefully we can keep them both for next year too.

Hey, this squad is still undefeated at home! I think Dai Dai and Pippen look like they might have higher ceilings in terms of shot creation for others because I don't remember the '09 squad actually being that creative, but it will hard to beat them in terms of just throwing buckets.
