Thanks TD for the great recap. Didn’t watch a play, but you’re right….there are no moral victories for this team. This team is deep and, for the most part, not lacking in experience - sure, Newell is a FR, but the remaining 4 in the starting 5 consists of 3 SR and a JR. It is just led by a buffoon whose outdated, inefficient and antiquated style of play robs the kids of any chance to win.
This is by far the worst team in the entire sport…how he remains employed is simply an exercise in institutional incompetence.
The team played better at the margins - the offense doesn't look as stuck as it has this season. Crisper screens, crisper cuts, slightly better shooting. But it's those details that are still being missed - 2 or 3 straight offensive fouls down the stretch while the game was still in reach. How many possessions the the Bears play 28 seconds of excellent defense and then give up a wide open 3? How many possessions of great defense to force a contested shot, and then give up an offensive rebound.
When you're starting from a terrible place, marginal gains and improvements wont do much of anything.
THE KNOWLTON LINE --- Baseball has the Mendoza Line which is a quantitive standard based upon batting average. It separates lousy hitters from competent hitters. That standard is set at .215 (Mario Mendoza's career batting average). I suggest we establish the Knowlton Line (to honor the worthless sack of nothing) and use it as the qualitative standard that separates pitiful teams from competitive teams. Arbitrarily, let's set the standard at 6 wins assuming a 30 game season on average (30 game season x .215 successful rate = 6.45, rounded down to 6). So Cal is currently 6 points below the Knowlton Line.
Meanwhile the women's team won at Haas on Friday night and Sunday afternoon thus completing their non conference slate with a 9-2 record. https://calbears.com/news/2022/12/18/womens-basketball-cal-handles-florida-am-88-58.aspx

Happy Monday…
Thanks for this write up. I appreciate how hard these student athletes try and how they never seem to give up. Acknowledging that effort is important.
Imma keep commenting until it happens: Mozilla
It would be nice to get some articles about the women's team. Especially with a nice non-conference record.
Feast on UT Arlington!!! A big W is coming.
What an embarrassment.

At this point, it's just a joke. I think we could us GPT AI to coach our team better.
There is no moral victory at this point. We are the worst team in the NCAA. A moral victory will be a new coach.
MBB - truly pathetic

When you’re 0-11 you’re not gonna get that call.
