The team played better at the margins - the offense doesn't look as stuck as it has this season. Crisper screens, crisper cuts, slightly better shooting. But it's those details that are still being missed - 2 or 3 straight offensive fouls down the stretch while the game was still in reach. How many possessions the the Bears play 28 seconds of excellent defense and then give up a wide open 3? How many possessions of great defense to force a contested shot, and then give up an offensive rebound.
When you're starting from a terrible place, marginal gains and improvements wont do much of anything.
THE KNOWLTON LINE --- Baseball has the Mendoza Line which is a quantitive standard based upon batting average. It separates lousy hitters from competent hitters. That standard is set at .215 (Mario Mendoza's career batting average). I suggest we establish the Knowlton Line (to honor the worthless sack of nothing) and use it as the qualitative standard that separates pitiful teams from competitive teams. Arbitrarily, let's set the standard at 6 wins assuming a 30 game season on average (30 game season x .215 successful rate = 6.45, rounded down to 6). So Cal is currently 6 points below the Knowlton Line.
He was indeed a fine infielder and that's how he stayed in the big leagues - btw, it was Bruce Bouchy who coined the Mendoza Line. Knowlton brings only one thing, it's MEDIOCRITY., in fact it's almost disinterested mediocrity or Alfred E. Newman "what me worry?" mediocrity.
Thanks TD for the great recap. Didn’t watch a play, but you’re right….there are no moral victories for this team. This team is deep and, for the most part, not lacking in experience - sure, Newell is a FR, but the remaining 4 in the starting 5 consists of 3 SR and a JR. It is just led by a buffoon whose outdated, inefficient and antiquated style of play robs the kids of any chance to win.
This is by far the worst team in the entire sport…how he remains employed is simply an exercise in institutional incompetence.
thats a fair thought process, but it did cause some division in the Leavey Center with some SCU fans next to me thinking they got away with one. In my personal opinion, I couldn't definitely tell it was a double-dribble in person but on replay I think it was. Tough call.
USF was completely flat for the game and didn’t want to be there until their coach got a technical in the second half. Then they ran full court press down 17 with 11 minutes left and UTA looked like an 8th grade team. If Fox doesn’t run press at any point for a team that has no ball handlers.....
Another coach that recruited half a dozen athletic, >6’6” wings with length and quickness would play a different style of basketball than this idiot does.
It would be nice to get some articles about the women's team. Especially with a nice non-conference record.
What an embarrassment.

At this point, it's just a joke. I think we could us GPT AI to coach our team better.
There is no moral victory at this point. We are the worst team in the NCAA. A moral victory will be a new coach.
MBB - truly pathetic
Thanks for this write up. I appreciate how hard these student athletes try and how they never seem to give up. Acknowledging that effort is important.
This is not “The Bad News Bears.” This is supposed to be a D1 basketball program, which clearly it is not. Fyi The Goodship Lollipop has sailed.

Well, Mendoza was at least a good fielder. I don't know what Knowlton brings.

Meanwhile the women's team won at Haas on Friday night and Sunday afternoon thus completing their non conference slate with a 9-2 record. https://calbears.com/news/2022/12/18/womens-basketball-cal-handles-florida-am-88-58.aspx
Imma keep commenting until it happens: Mozilla
Maybe Mozilla will sponsor our basketball court
Imma keep calling Knowlton out on Twitter until it does as well…
Feast on UT Arlington!!! A big W is coming.
Without Askew? You really think so? We’ll see….
I am dreaming. I know. But UT Arlington may be our only hope for a win for a while.

Happy Monday…
When you’re 0-11 you’re not gonna get that call.

You enjoy Cal losing 12 straight? Lots more enjoyment coming your way.
It’s definitely a unique design with the silhouette of the mission church on the court
yup thats always a good place to see a game. I saw SMC vs BYU in 2020 before the pandemic and it was electric
